Not sure where to post this, but appreciate the responses (I hope). Going on a cruise with family at the end of summer and looking for an easygoing, light and fun read.

Most of what I'm reading recently is on the heavy side, or is rather serious. Trying to completely relax and recharge on this trip, and whatever reading I do needs to reflect that. Thank y'all!

Any particular genre?

Ready Player One is a go to when I want a short, fun read.

Great question, and I guess I could've given some parameters. Sci-fi is always good. Fiction, comedy, even a documentary would be good as long as it doesn't take itself too seriously.

this book might fit. I thought it was outstanding

That is exactly what I was going to suggest!

Oh, Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I think that would be my choice.

Have you read Project Hail Mary? If not, do that one.

This is a good one if you want sci fi that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Project Hail Mary is a very fun ride by the same author as The Martian. Plans for a movie are underway.

This is a great book but it's not really a light, easy read

Terry Pratchett's Discworld series fits the bill.

Grimnoir Chronicles gets my vote

or literally any Xanth vote.
I change my vote. The Xanth books are perfect cruise books

The Dresden Files are great, fun, quick books that get better as they go along. Great refreshing reads if coming off of dense or epic books. Urban fantasy set in close to modern day Chicago about a wizard detective who takes supernatural cases.

By the time you get 6-7 books in, you have a large cast of some of the best side characters in any book series I have ever read, as well as some of the best villains.

Martian was a great read for me on a cruise if you have not read it. Also what would you think of a revisit of an old book. Jurassic Park. I find going back to old favorites for me is relaxing

Wow, some great suggestions so far! That Project Hail Mary sounds super interesting and is probably the leader in the clubhouse at the moment. That Xanth thing sounds great as well - I've been wondering what my next book series was gonna be.

Discworld was hilarious! Read those years ago and really enjoyed them! Rincewind is just about the most unlikely (and almost unlikeable) protagonist I could imagine.

Hitchhikers Guide deserves its own post, if not thread. I've read those books every few years since middle school, when it was still an actual trilogy. To this day, some of the best writing I've ever enjoyed.

I really appreciate the great responses here - hope y'all have a wonderful weekend!

Catch-22 is whimsical in a "war is hell but still kinda funny but also awful" kind of way...

Another vote for the Dresden files. They are a ton of fun but there are a bunch of them. I think 20? I'm listening to the last few right now on audible

Okay, that Dresden Files is a solid yes - thanks! The hundred year old man story is very intriguing!

ETA: The review my wife and I just read on the 100 Year Old man used the description "aging disgracefully"! That's precisely the tone I'm looking for!

For light and fun sci-fi, I would agree with both Bobiverse and Expeditionary Force ( "Trust the awesomeness "). But, both of those are longer books and Expeditionary Force takes a while to get going. For a quicker read, I'd recommend the Murderbot series. They are great short reads on really funny.

Just pick up anything on the newsstand..likely will be lighthearted and an easy read. That Patterson guy seems to sell a lot of crap.

In addition to the Dresden Files and Project Hail Mary, I'd add:

- "If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor" by Bruce Campbell
- "14" by Peter Clines

Try one of Chuck Klostermans books, especially on pop culture. Eat The Dinosaur, IV, Sex Lies Coco Puffs, are all good options for casual reading. One of my favorite authors ever.

did you read his most recent one (The 90's)? I can't tell if his writing has gone downhill or my tastes have changed. I just could not get into it like his older books.

The Rosie Project Series.

Funny and enjoyable series of books.

Yeah this is a perfect situation for Project Hail Mary. Also agree with the Murderbot Diaries suggestion, the first several are short novellas which would be good for this also. If you like the short ones then you can commit to the novel.

I have not read it. I was disappointed in some of his fiction books as well. But the original ones were gold

Christopher Moore writes very lighthearted, fun books. Have read Lamb, A Dirty Job and Secondhand Souls. He has a ton more
