Side question: is Atlanta really all that good? Looked like Dynasty or Dallas to me on previews.
It has its moments but it's certainly no Family Ties which also didn't make the top 100. Atlanta in the top 10 is ridiculous and I say that as someone that enjoys it.

You must be thinking of a different show because they couldn't be more polar opposites.

Atlanta is EXACTLY like Dynasty and Dallas.

just cut to the final four

#1 Sopranos
#4 The Wire
#3 Breaking Bad
#2 The Simpsons - its fans will probably carry it to the semis

The only one that could possibly crack that is Seinfeld,

So ok. a play in between Simpsons and Seinfeld. Regardless the winner goes down to BB the #3 seed. And Sopranos takes out The Wire in a close race.

Sopranos vs Breaking Bad

There is your final. You're welcome.

You misspelled The Shield. And Arrested Development as well.

The fact that Dark isn't on this list is an absolute shame. One of the best shows of the last decade easily. Too bad no one's watched it.

I can only imagine if GoT had been handled as well as Dark was.

Their new show comes out in November, btw.

Agreed with the comment that shows that are still running should be ineligible, but given the criteria, Ted Lasso and Stranger Things belong.

Is The Wire really that good? I like to watch great older series with numerous episodes so I have a my TV watching schedule (when I get to watch TV) set. FYI - I just finished up GoT. I'm about 4 episodes into season 1 of The Wire. It seems like a good show but not #4 all time? So far to me it seems like just another Law and Order type show.

So hard to compare different eras.

I Love Lucy redefined the genre, so I feel it's too low. Some recency bias, such as Fleabag, as has been mentioned.

I felt the same way back when I tried to watch it and ended up never finishing the first season. Even back then, though, I was told that it starts super slow and that you really have to get through the first season, which I found incredibly frustrating. Of course, everyone who pushes through seems to absolutely love it.

I keep telling myself I'll go back to it, but have yet to do so.

Same thing happened with me and my wife, didn't make it through the first season. It's not like we made a conscious decision to stop watching it, just kind of lost interest and forgot about it. Need to go back and get through that first season.

I'm admitted Wire fanboy so take this for what it's worth: Season 1, the first time you watch it, is the worst season. If you ever find yourself on a rewatch you'll love season 1 (and hate season 5). The intro to the characters and dynamics of "the game" is really slow but really important. Season 2 is better than 1, 3 is better than 2, 4 is best, and 5 is weird but still better than 80% of all TV.

I don't think I've ever met anyone that watched it through who didn't like it. It may not be their favorite but it'll be in their top quartile if not top 10 of shows. The kicker is sticking with it long enough for the hooks to set. Understanding that virtually everything/everybody in season 1 will matter throughout the series (for example: the opposing basketball coach in episode 9, every person in the police headquarters discussions, certain very ironic comments from one specific police commander, etc) but not knowing if you should care about a person/name/job-title, can be pretty tedious. Watching the series through, the level of importance shows up and if you revisit season 1 it clicks with multiple "aha" moments.

I think near everyone thinks 2 is worse than 1 in first viewing. Mostly because it changes so much from 1 and you don't fully understand the seasonal themes to come.

Either way, it's a top 3 show if all time.

I've never heard this take. I loved season one pretty much from the start.

I'd say if you're not interested by Kemah's undercover stint, which is pretty late in season one, then the show isn't for you. That's some all time riveting television.

No doubt that's when it picks up, but getting there is pretty tedious with random characters that mean nothing to you, random locations that mean nothing to you, random titles that mean nothing to you. You don't know who to care about, non of the ancillary roles those characters play, very little of the lingo, whether that random old dude from the pawn shop means anything, why McDaniels acts like he does, why McNulty acts like he does, how the pawns are the pawns…you name it. It's a really slow moving train until episode 9 and 10 then some emotions finally start to emerge. But even then it all kind of wraps up in ep 13 and you're like "ok, now what.". You turn on S2E1 and you're thinking "what the hell? Is this the right show?"

Everyone that has trouble getting into it, I totally get it. Once it starts clicking though it's a really fun ride.

It would be interesting for everyone to put their own top 5 or top 10 and your decade of age (20s, 30s, 40s, 50s ,60s, etc.) to see where everyone's at by generation. That would a great way to do a tournament as well although extremely confusing and no way to know who voted in the right bracket.

I'll even start it off if anyone wants to participate. I'm going to do mine without including current shows. Otherwise I would definitely include at least The Righteous Gemstones and maybe Mando as well.

Porkchop - 40s

1. Seinfeld
2. The Shield
3. The Office (US)
4. Arrested Development
5. Battlestar Galactica (2004)
6. Cheers
7. Saturday Night LIve
8. The Simpsons (currently watching it from the beginning with my daughter)
9. Game of Thrones
10. The Colbert Report

Personally, I think it's the greatest show ever made, but its not for everyone. It doesn't have the mass appeal that a show like Breaking Bad or The Sopranos has.

Am I the only one that thinks the Tonight Show with Carson is too low? I get a talk show is hard to slot but it's impact on the culture for approximately 2 decades is crazy. I think half of America watched Carson every night.

Yep. Found my old spreadsheet on Google docs.

I asked people to rank their top 15 shows, and tallied points by giving 10 points for #1, 9 for #2, down to 1 point for #10-15.

These were the results of the 32 that made the tourney:

1 Breaking Bad 349
2 Game of Thrones 327
3 Seinfeld 206
4 Lost 143
5 The Wire 137
6 The Office (US) 125
7 The Simpsons 103
8 Arrested Development 98
9 Scrubs 77
10 Band of Brothers 74
11 South Park 74
12 Friends 72
13 The Sopranos 69
14 Parks and Rec 63
15 Fargo 61
16 Battlestar Galactica 53
17 Friday Night Lights 53
18 X Files 53
19 Mad Men 51
20 Cheers 50
21 M*A*S*H 49
22 Sherlock 49
23 24 43
24 Justified 41
25 True Detective 40
26 Daredevil 39
27 Walking Dead 38
28 Star Trek: Next Generation 36
29 How I Met Your Mother 34
30 Andy Griffith Show 30
31 Futurama 29
32 Mystery Science Theater 3K 27

Unfortunately I can't find the final results, but I do recall BB winning it all.
