Agreed on Nirvana being more grunge. I feel like AIC and Soundgarden are more of a bridge between hair metal and alternative than any thing else. Go back and listen. It's glorious.

Re: Radiohead

I had a plan for a while to hand out CDs of OK Computer at high schools to show kids what a GREAT album sounded like, but then these kids stopped listening to CDs which deep sixed that plan.

When I was in high school I remember reading an article in SPIN (I think) that made the claim that Green Day was this generations Beatles and The Offspring we're The Rolling Stones. I've never been a particular fan of either the Beatles/Stones and was certainly a Green Day &Offspring fan in 1994 but even then I thought it was the dumbest thing I've ever read.

I wish I could find the article because it was hilarious.

Everyone knows that the 90s generation of The Beatles is Oasis.

Just sayin'.

I love Nirvana, but probably true.

I saw Offspring in NYC during their Smash 20th tour, and they played the whole album beginning to end. (Except moving Self-Esteem to the end of course.) The crowd sang along to every single song.

Probably not a ton of albums like that, even Nevermind.

Going to have to see your math on that one. What did Smash have other than Self Esteem, Gotta get away, and come out and play? Also, none of those songs made the main chart like the Nirvana songs did.

Both albums had four singles released. I don't recall any song outside of Smash's four singles playing on the radio.

Who the hell invited Offspring to a discussion about good music? They made Pretty Fly for a White Guy. Done. End of story. They belong in a discussion with Papa Roach and Puddle of Mudd, not Nirvana and Radiohead.

Polly, Something in the Way, and On a Plain got a lot of airplay. The underrated Drain You, and Breed were also on the radio, though not official singles.

It's not on the album, so it shouldn't count, but the B side of Teen Spirit, Aneurysm, got a lot of play too.

Also, the big Nirvana songs placed on the main billboard chart, which the offspring songs never scratched.

That's not fair. They also had that song that sounded like Obladi Oblada, and the one that ripped off Tears for Fears

Then again, Radiohead had to actually give the dad of the guy from the Strokes writing credit after they ripped him off.

The other 3 Seattle grunge acts being Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, and Soundgarden?

I've really been revisiting Soundgarden and AIC lately, and my goodness they are amazing. "Like Suicide" may be a top 5 grunge song for me.
Seriously, this. We were so spoiled in the early to mid 90's with some amazing music (and videos for that matter).

AIC is incredible. The album stuff, unplugged, all of it. Unplugged "Nutshell" might just be my fav song of all time.

Just a few weeks ago one of my buddies posted a meme describing AIC as "screwed and chopped 80's hair metal"...makes me chuckle when certain songs come on.

My favorite thing the Offspring did was sending out the press release saying they were going to release their next album "Chinese Democracy" back in like 2003. Hilarious.

I also liked "All I want" because it reminds me of that Crazy Taxi video game which is fun as hell

Ummm, the radio.

Yeah, no ****ing chance that's accurate. No more than 4 of those songs ever received significant airplay on terrestrial radio.

Nevermind was released Sep 24 1991. I went back and compiled all the songs played since then on all the rock and/or alternative stations from the top 50 media markets in US and Canada. Ran some pivot tables and determined I was being an ******* last weekend. I don't what my problem was. I just wanted to own up to that and apologize to you.

Saw this article the other day and it reminded me if this thread. There's been a handful of alternative stations lately tossing their currents and going all gold.

Quote:

One of the best ways to ensure that any format will rebound is to declare it dead. Country saw that after a New York Times article in the mid-'80s. CHR has come back three times, although a slight improvement in product hasn't helped much recently. Alternative was actually in a pretty happy place in the late '80s/early '90s, but grunge was bigger and more undeniable and brought back current-based rock radio overall.

As it happens, I find myself liking a decent number of both Alternative and Active titles these days. If stations would play them both, it seems like a quorum for a format, but it's hard to know where the radio motor for that comeback would come from. The new musical trends bedroom and TikTok pop are places Alternative radio didn't want to go in the end. Triple-A, more current than ever in recent years, seems to be the place to take new Alternative music, but not all of that product fits.
