The other 3 Seattle grunge acts being Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, and Soundgarden?

I've really been revisiting Soundgarden and AIC lately, and my goodness they are amazing. "Like Suicide" may be a top 5 grunge song for me.
Mudhoney, TAD, and Screaming Trees.

I said what I said. I have zero hesitation putting Badmotorfinger at #2 though.

These 3 + Sonic Youth, are they the grunge forefathers? Proto-grunge? Prunge for short?

Soundgarden would win in a fist fight against AIC but I have no problem putting Dirt a close second.

For Seattle you could throw in the Melvins if we're stretching back a little.

Pearl Jam was better than Nirvana.

Both can be true.

And I agree with the OP.

1 step further. Everything you said plus Purple by STP is a more complete album than anything Nirvana or Pearl Jam ever made. More complete in that literally every song on that album is spectacular.

It's not necessary to say one band is better than the other when they're all phenomenal in their own ways.

PS - Radiohead is outstanding and a very important group to me.
Personally, I'd rank Purple as my second favorite grunge album behind Ten. I think every song on Ten is great.

As far as Nirvana goes, I don't think they are overrated because of their importance to music history, but I'm not a huge fan of their music outside of their radio staples. I put them 4th behind the other big 3 Seattle grunge bands.

I like that your 2 favorite grunge albums are ones that a ton of people don't consider as grunge.

They absolutely need to be included in the discussion.

Not from Seattle and a few years older, but The Pixies are ****ing awesome.

They should not be left out of the conversation
I do not want people to be very agreeable, as it saves me the trouble of liking them a great deal.

No doubt. What percentage of Radiohead fans you think have actually listened to an entire Radiohead album start to finish?

I love The Bends but never got all the way through another album of theirs.

I saw them open up for U2 at Joel Osteen's church in 1992.

I might still have their concert tshirt somewhere.

If those aren't grunge, then you're limiting grunge to maybe 10 bands.

That's the one I saw. I bought tickets off of a guy who was more interested in watching the Duke/Michigan Fab Five title game.

First time I had heard the Pixies. Last time I have heard the Pixies.

Pixies are great live. Saw them last time they came to Houston. Great show!

Also still putting out good music. Their newest album came out today.

Dang you're totally right. Melvins absolutely need to be in the Prunge hierarchy.

Also Kim Thayil could whip anyone's ass. But he's a Buddhist I think so he wouldn't.

You'd be hard pressed to find a track listing as deep as Nevermind. At least 10 of the 12 receive significant airplay.

1. "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
2. "In Bloom"
3. "Come as You Are"
4. "Breed"
5. "Lithium"
6. "Polly"
7. "Territorial Pissings"
8. "Drain You"
9. "Lounge Act"
10. "Stay Away"
11. "On a Plain"
12. "Something in the Way"

Still waiting for you to show me some proof. I managed a music store for the last half of the 90's so I think I have some knowledge in this area.

If you're counting Breed than we probably have to define what "significant airplay" is.

"Significant airplay" was the statement. I'd be shocked to see actual proof that Polly got significant airplay in any wide areas.

Polly, Breed, On A Plain, Something in the Way all used to get significant airplay as well. Not sure what kind of music store you used to manage or radio stations you listen to…

(FYI there is no Nirvana channel on SiriusXM. They just named their 90's alternative and grunge station Lithium. Let me know if you need me to explain the difference.)

I went to 94.5 the Buzz Houston website and went back a week or two…

https://thebuzz.iheart.com/music/recently-played/

Something In the Way x5
Lithium x3
Come As You Are x2
On A Plain
In Bloom
Smells Like Teen Spirit

The only other songs I noticed were a couple each of The Man Who Sold the World and Heart Shaped Box and All Apologies once.

Maybe it's a Houston thing. Used to hear a lot of different Nirvana songs on 94.5 The Buzz back in the day.
