So, I'm confused. Do you guys hate it and yet watch it, or don't watch it, but just hate it?

I haven't missed a single episode since the early '90s. I love the *idea* of Saturday Night Live, and like the tradition/experience of watching it in general. But this is definitely the worst it's ever been. Of the current cast, there are a few standouts I really enjoy, and the Please Don't Destroy guys always crack me up (I probably look forward to their sketches the most). But overall, the past few years I find myself fast forwarding through more than half of every episode, which is something I never used to do.

Kyle Mooney leaving will be a net positive for the show and its writing.

I must be in the minority, because I always loved him. Especially anything he and Beck Bennett did together.

I always liked him. His appearances were usually a nice change of pace. Definitely better when Beck Bennett was still on the show

I watch it and generally enjoy it. It's definitely down right now though. Cast has been really good the past few years but they lost so much talent before this season. Writing has been subpar for a while, and it seems like they play favorites. I always really liked Melissa Villaseñor, but she would barely get any screen time while Chloe Fineman was in every sketch.

Weekend Update is great with Jost and Che though

My DVR is set up from years ago to Record Series (new episodes) and like TCTTS I find myself fast-forwarding thru quite a bit of the show. I've watched SNL for 40+ years and I'm always hoping it returns to the glory it (more than) once was. Or at the very least, try to disguise your political slant and make fun of both sides of the aisle.

There was a show called "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" about 15 years ago that was based upon SNL. Throughout the week the writers would start with a number of skits, then trim those down to the ones that were good enough to make the show. As I watch SNL, I wonder "good God, how bad were the other skits that got trimmed?" And what made the writers think this one was a hit??

I agree with you on the Ritual. It used to be that. Turn on SNL and breakaway into the weekend. Wish we could get back to that.

My older brother was terrified of EggMan.

I couldnt stop dreaming about Toonces the Driving Cat.

Fake commercials; The Love Toilet, Mom Jeans, Nerf Crotch-bat, where are those now?

It's just been filled with unfunny horse**** junk.

For me personally, the weirdest thing about this current era is having lived next to door for three years to Mikey Day and Taran Killam, who were roommates here in LA with two other guys, in a crappy, three-bedroom apartment. Our front doors faced each other, our little patios/stoops the width of a sidewalk apart. All back in our mid-20s, before they were famous. We just knew them as aspiring actors.

I remember Mikey *always* had big headphones on, wherever he went, and would never smile/always looked super serious. My roommates and I just called him "Headphones." He was friendly and would always nod "What's up" or whatever, but I hardly ever heard him talk. So it's extra weird seeing him be so animated on the show. Taran, on the other hand, was super gregarious, and was always loudly practicing/doing various voices. To the point of me having to shut our patio windows numerous times because it was so annoying.

Overall, though, they were all good guys. Hung out/had drinks with them a few times. They probably wouldn't recognize me on the street today, but if I said, "1242 Wellesley" they'd instantly remember who I was.

Those were the absolute best. They still try the fake commercials, but only like 1 out of every 10 makes me chuckle. Seems like it wouldn't that hard to come up legit good ones again.

The tattoo removal ointment commercial is excellent

Also the menstrual cycle medication that you only take once per year

The Chameleon luxury automobile with the callback to the ball bearing from the Infiniti commercial of the time

John Belushi, decathalon champ and spokesman for the little donuts

Colon Blow

The attorney who hates dogs

Yes to all of those. Also, Crystal Gravy and Cookie Dough Gatorade, off the top of my head.

They still with at least 1-2 sketches every show, I imagine there are behind the scenes politics involved in getting ideas to make the live show.

I think they have gone too far with the pre-recorded sketches, there are too many of them for a live show now.
Part of that is I think they just have less cast members that are actually good at performing live, or being part of an improv group.
The guy who did the standup routine during weekend update the 1st week, Miles Tellers week, was really funny. Not sure how it will transition into the sketches though.

There are a few cast members I think they need to drop still, that are both not funny and not good actors, but so far i think its trending upwards from the previous 3-5 years.

For me, YouTube has really improved the SNL viewing experience. Now, I can just look for Weekend Update, and see if any skits look popular. I see no reason to watch it live anymore.

One of things I don't really like that they do a ton now is try to break other cast members. It's funny when Fallon can't stop laughing because Ferrell is going nuts with the cowbell. It's funny when Spade or Applegate have to hide their faces because Farley is that damn good. It's not really funny when someone is intentionally trying to break a cast member by being really annoying to them. Sometimes it seems like they don't even care if the skit is funny, they just want to get into another cast members face and do stuff to them until they can't take it anymore.

That was really funny, unfortunately you've probably accidentally turned this thread into its own horror movie when the lurkers wake up and start feeding on their own flesh.

Shoulda stuck with the safer bet, the return of David S Pumpkins - and the always magnificent Bobby Moynihan.

It's weird that it took Jack Harlow of all people to host one of the better episodes in the last year. Minimal Cringe, some bite to political stuff that's not just Trump stuff (the weekend Update jokes were pretty strong if you ask me). And I will always love Drunk Uncle. Unfortunately knowing how this works, next weeks show with Amy schumer is going to be so bad
