That Airplane! is practically a complete remake of Zero Hour!. The longest, most subtle joke in Airplane! is that they kept the propeller background noise of Zero Hour! even though Airplane! is set on a jet.

Very subtle, but the scene in "The Courier" where the one Soviet defector says that he wants to move to Montana when he finally makes it to the states.

On a related note, I still hold onto hope that Sam Neill's character in The Hunt for Red October somehow survived and made it out to Montana after witness protection sent him to school to get his PhD in paleontology.

You weren't 23-25 years old in 1997-1999 and wasting every waking second of your life looking for info about The Phantom Menace is your main problem.

Wow as many times as I have watched Close Encounters I never picked up on that.

Another one that deals with music, in the most recent Jumanji film when it first enters the desert landscape which is the primary setting of the story the theme from Lawrence of Arabia is played briefly (the 38 second mark of the linked clip). I found it cool that someone in the production was on the ball enough to include it although it likely went over the head of most of the film's target audience, For me it was one of the best parts of an overall enjoyable popcorn flick

Absolutely this. The 2000s were filled with terribly stupid "spoof everything" Wayans movies, but this one was so so well done. Hilarious flick
