I'm holding out for deep fake de-aged King Tut, Egghead or Louie the Lilac.

This is finally starting to make some sense. Basically, it sounds like Clayface was the original villain for The Batman: Part II, but I'm guessing Reeves found so much to mine with the character that he felt a spinoff movie would instead do the character more justice. Which ultimately became a Mike-Flanagan-written movie that Reeves will only produce. The fact that Reeves then had to pivot to a different villain would also at least partly explain why The Batman: Part II script has taken him so long to write...

From Matt Belloni's newsletter tonight...

Quote:

Have you heard about any issues between James Gunn and Matt Reeves? What's really going on with The Batman: Part II?

I'm told Reeves is set to deliver his script for The Batman: Part II on Monday - not a moment too soon for DC and Warner Bros. The DC co-heads, Gunn and Peter Safran, initially expected the script more than a year ago. It's now been three years since Reeves' first Batmanreboot with Robert Pattinson grossed nearly $800 million and prompted the swift announcement of a sequel. So yeah, the executives are frustrated at the delay, all the way up to Warner Discovery C.E.O. David Zaslav - who, if everything goes perfectly, won't get a new movie based on his most valuable piece of I.P. until October 1, 2027, nearly five and a half years into his tenure at the company.

But… issues? Rumors have circulated that DC was ready to move on from Reeves if he didn't write faster. But he's a notoriously slow filmmaker - the first The Batman script took forever, as well - and he had some personal issues to deal with. Gunn has pretty consistently made supportive comments about Reeves, including in an interview released today. "People should get off Matt's nuts because it's like, let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it."

Crushed nuts or not, the question is whether that delayed 2027 release date will hold. A Warners source told me they're still planning on a shoot beginning in January, after Pattinson finishes Dune 3, which would provide enough time to keep the date. That's if the script and preproduction process go smoothly from here. So we'll see…

I sat down with a well-placed source this week and asked about The Batman sequel, and this person told me that the script was "worth the wait."

They described it as a "big swing" for director Matt Reeves and his co-writer, Mattson Tomlin, and said that the duo is "really going for it" with the uncompromising sequel, which is expected to be just as dark as its 2022 predecessor, which grossed $772 million worldwide.

They also mentioned that the character of Robin is part of the script, which should pique the interest of agents across Hollywood.

I didn't press for too many more details, but it sounded like everyone at DC Studios is extremely pleased with the direction Reeves is going with The Batman Part II now that the script has been turned in.

I can't imagine what Robin will even look or be like in this universe, but my interest is definitely piqued. On one hand, it's a great way to further separate this Batman iteration from Nolan's and Snyder's. But on the other hand, seeing as The Brave and the Bold will feature Robin as well, in the DCU, I'm a little surprised Gunn is allowing this.

Regardless, Pattinson's Bruce/Batman is so emo, serious, and stoic that having a potentially plucky sidekick seems like a fun way to both annoy him but also bring out the best in him. Could be a lot of fun.

Now, after literally years of guessing, hopefully we get news of the villain (or villains) soon as well.

Other things I'm curious about...

- Post Penguin series, after all of its critical success, how big is his role this go-around?

- Will either the Riddler or the Joker or both make cameo/limited appearances?

- Will Catwoman be back?

- Will Bruce finally be more of a public-facing playboy?

- Will they give Bruce a love interest?

I sure hope so. I appreciated the different take on Bruce - and The Batman is a *mostly* great movie... but I definitely do not want to see mopey, emo Bruce Wayne again. Hard to imagine Pattinson playing him differently though.

To expand on your earlier point of Bruce being so emo and stoic, curious to see how Pattinson takes that next step should their be a love interest.

And yeah, the "dynamic" between Batman and Robin is crucial.

As is the case in most sequels, please just don't try to do too much with all of this...

Can Robin be played by the same actor or is the Brave and the Bold in a different universe? All these different universes are kinda a beating to keep up with,

A version of Robin was in The Dark Knight Rises, although he was not presented in the typical fashion for the character.

Different Robin.

The Brave and the Bold = the DCU, which James Gunn's Superman kicked off last month. That said, don't expect the DCU iteration of Batman and Robin until 2028 at the earliest.

The Batman Part II = DC Elseworlds, which is basically anything that's not part of the main DCU. Releases October 2027.

IIRC the actor who played the gang initiate in the opening scene also played a quasi robin character in the Titans show. I wonder if that was on purpose

The Edward Cullen version of Batman was really good. I need to rewatch it and watch The Penguin show too before the next one comes out. I'm looking forward to that sequel.

But man keeping up with all the reboots and competing slapfight-averses are confusing and off putting. The old way of multi-movie sagas that are drawn out in phases doesn't do anything for me.

The marvelverse was made up of completely uninteresting characters aside from GotG and spiderverse (maybe these weren't MCU, don't pay enough attention to know), and the upcoming DC movie outlook is super bleak as well. Aside from Batman, none of the dc characters move the needle.

Ha, seriously.

All I know is that Jeff is highly accurate. Yes, he gets things wrong every so often, but overall he's one of the most accurate reporters/scoopers in the game, with a decades-long track record.

Could this be one of his rare misses? Sure. But I also think Gunn's wording is telling.

Regardless, with casting about to ramp up, we should find out for sure here in the next couple months or so.

A Matt Reeves interview from 2022, in which he talks openly about how game he is to include Robin in the sequel. My guess is he found a way to do it...
