Falling SKies went from being a cool idea for an alien invasion with a American Revolutionary-themed resistance and one of the best season-ending plot twists ever to what I can only assume was a really minimized budget and some of the worst plot holes, week-to-week nonsense and really bad special effects in the last couple of seasons.

Yeah that was brutal. Such a disappointment because the show was solid at first.

From Dusk till Dawn. First half pretty interesting and quirky gangster thing going. Some cool characters. clooney's being cool Clooney. Tarantino's doing his weirdness. Keitel seems to be in a very different character than you would expect. Then all of the sudden you're like, what the **** just happened?! And you just have to go along with the insanity of it all.

Out of curiosity I watched the TV series remake. They were able to keep the tone consistent because you were introduced to the supernatural aspect immediately. And the reveal was for the characters not the audience (who presumably already knew of the IP).

This is a good thread. As far as movies go, most "dark comedies" take a turn into dark at some point. Bernie is all fun and games and then you remember that a real person was murdered.

From Dusk til Dawn is a great answer too, very sudden shift. I had no idea what I was watching on TV that night.

There are some others on the tip of my tongue. I'm going ti be thinking about this all day.

I nominate Wandavision. I had no background and it appeared to be a fun send up of old TV series. Ended pretty seriously.

This sequence right here was an awesome change in tone. Made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

Korean films like Oldboy and Parasite tend to go places you don't really expect them to at the start.

True that. I assumed that, based on the title, Parasite was going to be a zombie movie. I was an hour and a half in still waiting for them to show up.

We stopped watching Big Sky, because it became a totally different show than when we first started.

MASH went from a primarily comedy show to a social issues show.

While both styles were good, the sheer silliness of the Henry Blake years ruled.
Absolutely! The funny and bawdy early years were so much more enjoyable than the sanctimonious and self-aware later years.

Sons of Anarchy. Halfway decent show for two seasons then just pushed the plot as far as they could to complete silliness.

Could probably say the exact same thing about Yellowstone after season 1.

Vice Principals got a lot darker in the second season.

8 Simple Rules was pretty somber for several episodes after John Ritter's death.

Red Rising Series

First few books were 1 character driven, and then all of the sudden it's about galactic civil war.

I just reread the original trilogy and start 4/5. I'm in the middle of 5 now and kind of wish I just left it with the perfect ending of the first trilogy.

It's good but I don't like the different viewpoints and I don't like trudging through all of the sociopolitical issues that the rebellion created. 5th book is also just darker and more depressing than any of the other books.
I made the decision halfway through book 4 that the second trilogy had no chance to match the original. Never finished it and probably won't attempt to.

I guess I'm in the minority in that I loved that Brown expanded the universe outwards. Maybe he expanded it a bit too far(disagree but understand the argument), so much so that a couple of the main characters become almost cameos in their brief appearances, but I really appreciate that he's going for it and getting into all the sociopolitical/rebellion aspects of it. Unlike other authors that just rehash the same **** book to book. It's not perfect, but he's definitely trying to explain what happens during and after a rebellion and how it's never clean

It's still entertaining as hell IMO

America's destiny is not of our own choosing. We did not seek nor did we provoke an assault on our freedom and our way of life. We did not expect nor did we invite a confrontation with evil. Yet the true measure of a people's strength is how they rise to master that moment when it does arrive.

The Office. The 7.5 seasons Michael Scott was the main character were the best comedy on TV. Then when he left they didn't know what to do for the rest of the season. So in season 8 they shipped most of the main characters to Florida and brought in Nellie who would have been the worst character ever if not for them forgetting that James spader shouldn't still be playing his character from the Blacklist on the office.

But in season 9 they got rid of Spader, toned Nellie down and did a good job of focusing on the wacky personalities that helped make the show so good instead of trying to force storylines that didn't fit

I am of the minority opinion that the series finale of the Office should have been Jim & Pam's wedding episode.

I agree, until I had to keep rereading sections to wrap my head around what was going on. It became a chore to keep track of everything.

I may give it a second go in the future, but I would have to read the original trilogy over again and go straight into the expanded universe.

One of the greatest movies of All Time (comedy and spoof). I would have loved to hang out with those two 10-15 years ago.

You are 100% correct. It would have been the perfect ending. There's a theory that in a show when two main characters get married that it is never as good as it once was.

I would argue Better Call Saul took a tone shift. They started it off more hokey and light than breaking bad and pretty quickly pivoted it to the same tone as Breaking Bad. It was originally supposed to be a comedy and early episodes were definitely more comedy based

The Office S1, Michael was unlikable and more like the BBC version. Season two was so much better.

Justified started out as a weekly episodic show that wasn't really connected. It got so much better when they brought Boyd out of jail.

With the office, they had to give Michael some redeeming quality or they would've been cancelled.

Absolutely. He was unlikeable. They tried to do the same with Andy and Dwight and it only worked for Dwight.

I'm debating when to start it, but currently I'm going to wait for the 2nd trilogy to finish before reading it. However this thread is giving me pause. The first trilogy is probably some of the best soft Scifi since Dune. The Iron Rain, the rise of the Reaper and Sevro's howlers, and Darrows' infiltration of the golds, there are so many epic moments in the series. Looks like book 6 comes out July 25th. So it looks like I'll be binging the series and reading 4 and 5 just before it comes out.

I was doing some looking and I noticed that the second series will be 4 books. So there's more on the way after 6, but it sounds like Brown has been working on both so here's hoping there's a minimal wait between the 2.
