Lots of blowback on this one.

I didn't see her performance but I know a lot of you guys did.

Probably not for this performance alone, which is what it should have been based on, but I think I've heard some statements that it could have been for her body of work over her entire career. I was surprised to hear she has never been nominated before.

Yeah, I think the academy saw this as the Katy chance to give her one and took it.
Not much more complicated than that.

Career win. Deserved in that regard imo.

I haven't seen the movie, but I have seen Wakanda Forever and I don't understand what was so great about Angela Bassett's performance. It was just a typical superhero film acting job. If she got screwed in anything, it was not winning for What's Love Got to Do with it.

She was fantastic as Tina Turner.

I didn't think so. However, I didn't see any of the other performances.

Hell yeah she was amazing.

She didn't have that much screen time, but had to show a TON of acting range, and played her role perfect down to a T. She just disappeared into her character no matter what that character was doing, and stole every scene she was in IMO.

To be fair, it took my second viewing(turned the movie off midway through my first viewing) to fully appreciate her acting.

I didn't see EEAO but her performance at 01:00:37 of Trading Places was worthy of an Academy Award.

No. But it wasn't Angela Bassett who got screwed, it was Stephanie Hsu.

Then a Lifetime Achievement Award rather than depriving some other candidate who might have had a better performance. (I did not see her JLC's movie, nor do I know who she was up against, so not commenting on the quality of her performance in whatever movie she was in [and I am reasonably certain she was not recognized for last year's Halloween movie]).

Just the way these go sometimes. Leo was good in The Revenant, not career best, but it was certainly deserved for his entire body of work. Similarly with Scorsese and The Departed.

It's the same reason Leo didn't win for Gilbert Grape, even though he far outperformed Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive. They have to "pay their dues", so to speak.

They rarely give them to the young actors this early in this career.

This was also why I was sure Austin Butler wouldn't win.

The Oscars are alot like the NBA MVP award in that they hand them out a year or 2 after the person should have earned it.

At this point the biggest 'wrong' that needs to be righted is getting Tom Cruise his Oscar. The man has been a hollywood icon for decades and has an empty trophy case (should have arguably 2 already).

I get frustrated by the body of work Oscar because what about the nominee that year who had one amazing performance and might never reach that point again?

This. It's either an award for the past year's entry or its not. Shouldn't be both.

Maybe they should expand the Lifetime award for bodies of work where it may be deserved.

I mean, every Oscar is a subjective award. I probably wouldn't have voted for her, but I'm also not outraged that she won. It was a great performance. Angela Bassett winning would have been more egregious in my mind.

Which is why I was pretty surprised when Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook at age 22.

I enjoyed the movie and she was fine, but oscars worthy? Not sure.

Harrison Ford hasn't won an Oscar either, but when you think about it, he kinda plays himself in most of his movies. Not a huge difference in character from movie to movie.

Tom undoubtedly has more range, but Leo has taken on more crazy roles, which Hollywood seems to love and led to his 'lifetime' award.

Hope Cruise gets his though in the future.

The real person who got screwed. Just for this scene alone. Look at her. Look at that car. That alone deserved an Oscar.

Ya Harrison just never took many chances (plus he started super late).

Cruise has basically retired from dramatic film roles but he was absolutely an ELITE actor in the 90s. He should absolutely have gotten 1 for Magnolia and probably Jerry Maguire too (Geoffrey Rush somehow won it in 1997 which is absurd looking back lol).

Ya that's the only reason I'm not mad about Brandon Fraser or Ke Huy Quan though. I think Colin Farrell or Barry Keoghan could/should have won but they both will absolutely have more opportunities.

Eh, in this case I think Brendan Fraser "deserved" it even aside from being a career win. The Banshees performances were good, but didn't really stand out to me in any regard like Fraser, or Butler in Elvis.

Never saw the Elvis movie so you could be right there, but I personally thought Barry Keoghan was the best thing about Banshees (and my personal pick for supporting actor). But I'm absolutely not mad at all about who he lost to.

I think Cruise deserved an Oscar for Les Grossman. Prove me wrong.

Have you seen Shine? Rush absolutely smoked that role.

Jerry maguire is memorable and fun, but come on. "You complete me" was so overhyped and an obvious play to get women to sit thru a sports movie.

I'm not gonna lie...I've never even heard of it. Lol I was 8 years old when it came out BUT I have seen Jerry Maguire and I do know that Cuba Gooding Jr. won for his role in that movie and Tom Cruise smoked him. That whole movie falls apart if Cruise isn't an absolute force of charisma.
