Seems like the academy uses the supporting Oscar awards to do the 'body of work' thing or throw in a wildcard like Jack Palance, Mira Sorvino or Marisa Tomei.

Randomly watched Jerry Maguire on Sunday - just so my son would watch the football and my daughter would watch the romance (both teenagers). Neither got through it.M.C. Jerry maguire is memorable and fun, but come on. "You complete me" was so overhyped and an obvious play to get women to sit thru a sports movie.
On rewatch - Tom has some severe cringe in that one. Never realized how much he was the "I know I'm ultra handsome and charming - but I'm lonely so I'll just sleep with this girl who is beneath me". Spent the whole movie with huge ****-eating grin on his face.
Really liked the movie when it came out. Not so much now.

Which is why Cuba had to put him in his place about shoplifting the pootie.
I'm a big supporter of Tom Cruise's acting work and I liked Jerry Maguire, even on a rewatch in the last five years, but to act like it was some huge failure of the Academy to not give him Best Actor is a giant stretch. Rush gave a Tour de Force performance, the kind that doesn't happen every year. Cruise was really good in that role, but to me they aren't even comparable.
Honestly, that year, if you are looking past Rush, the next best performance was probably Billy Bob in Slingblade.

At this point the biggest 'wrong' that needs to be righted is getting Tom Cruise his Oscar. The man has been a hollywood icon for decades and has an empty trophy case (should have arguably 2 already).

Geoffrey Rush absolutely deserved the Oscar for Shine. My biggest problem with Shine is the emphasis in the script on Rachmaninov's 3rd piano concerto as some kind of madness-inducing impossible piece.
