Prince has 7 Grammys and an Oscar for the score of Purple Rain. He clearly sucks and no one likes him.

Purple rain and when doves cry are so bad

That movie is unwatchable

Tell me how good batdance is again

I mean you're giving more credit Aha than Prince.
Can you name a Prince song that is "Take On Me" level iconic, that everybody in the world knows and not just Prince fans? Only one that could compete is When Doves Cry, I'd imagine.

I don't think any Prince song makes a top 10.

Aha and their music shouldn't even be spoken of in any context with Prince.

Gotta give a nod to the King - he didn't write it of course - but his last #1 song in the US is amazing imho

Haven't read the thread (I will) but the answer to the OP is "I Want You Back" by the Jackson 5.

Runner up is "Rosanna" by Toto.

This one is pretty dope too, from the Ready Player One trailer.

Hmmmm, yeah your opinion vs. the top honors he took home in both music and film for those songs. What to believe? And I'm not sticking up for Batdance because that song does suck, but that it did hit #1 on the Billboard chart when it came out.

Jeff Porcaro's shuffle beat made Rosanna a great song. IMO it's the best drum groove since Bernard Purdie invented his signature shuffle.

This thread is a dumpster fire and I love it.

Cuppa things hurrrr....

--Glad someone brought up INXS. Damn that's some good stuff. Not Enough Time is lowkey one kd the greatest love songs ever and its also kinda horny

--for you Hall & Oates fans....please tell me you have called up Callin' Oates before? Someone call 719-26-OATES and see if it still works. Used to be an automated prompt that would play you a Hall & Oates song.

--I saw on reddit today that apparently Prince tried to run over MJ because he was all tiny and mad about something. Quincy Jones said it was true in some GQ article. Can't find any of that right now but Google might help ya.

"Just Like Heaven" by The Cure or "Don't You Forget About Me" by Simple Minds would be two of my choices. "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" would be up there, too. "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel and "Heart and Soul" by T'Pau would get honorable mention.

What was the end credits song from Ready Player One (fun movie btw)?

Oh yeah, Hall & Oates, You Make My Dreams.

Wow, half of the Ready Player One soundtrack has already been mentioned in this thread, haha…

Pop music exists outside of the 80's.

Why? Besides just being absolutely great songs, they are both perfectly constructed and performed.

"Baby I Need Your Loving" by the Four Tops also deserves consideration. It is absolute perfection and only gets better as the song goes on.

Here's a total "banger" of a pop song that was huge around the time of the 1989 spring freeze at A&M. Still holds up very well today.

Africa was a great song in its day. However, much like Journey's "Don't Stop Believing", it's been so overused/overplayed in the past 15 years (hell they get played more NOW than they did in the 80's). So much so that I've come to despise "Africa". Will literally change the station when I hear it on now.

All that considered, "Rosanna" is just so much tighter and perfectly put together than "Africa".

No, according to the Grammy's, Milli Vanilli would be either a rap or rock song. The best pop song would be 10 minute recording of Neil Young and Bob Dylan farting into harmonicas.

It HAS been an 80's centric thread so far. So as a 90's kid, I gotta nominate a few 90's bangers.

Which would be pretty creepy if true.

INXS is probably underrated; a great pop-rock band. Michael Hutchence was an all time front man. A lot of their songs could be released today.
