The movies always felt a little rushed and left out a lot of the stories. So a series to tell each story might be interesting. It's going to be hard to imagine anyone but the original cast in these parts though.

The world of Harry Potter is so large and there are so many stories they could tell. Seems odd they go back to remaking the books.

I enjoyed (most of) the books as a kid, but it's a shame that they haven't died yet. I didn't bother to watch the final three movies (and never will), and hopefully, we don't lose many talented writers to this development.

The Good:
  • Can actually tell the story that the movies chose to throw out. Especially starting with The Goblet of Fire.
  • Can recast Harry Potter to someone who's mannerisms don't annoy the ever-living **** out of me.
  • Jo involved, which already is a confidence builder for me.

The Bad:
  • The adult actors in the movies were nearly all perfectly cast. I can't imagine a better casting for Snape, Hagrid, McGonagall, Sirius, Lupin, and several others. Just all so well cast.
  • How do you squeeze a full season out of books 1 and 2? That season is going to have a lot of filler.
  • If you don't use John Williams' theme, then you are already providing a "lesser than" option.

I don't hold the movies in any high prestige, other than the performances of several of the adult actors. It was cool to see some of the stuff on the screen, but overall I found the movies to be hollow and rushed. Not great adaptations, in the least bit.

This is me complaining about this getting a series.

It will also be me picking up hbomax to watch this series.

I really like the HP movies and it's nice to be able to just leave the movies on around the kids.

For all of the adults they hit perfect, something about how Voldemort was written and acted never felt right to me, but I agree with your points.

Not sure if I am excited about this or not though.

seems too soon to me.

would prefer hbo reboot seasons 7 & 8 of Game Of Thrones and do osmething better.

This. The last movie only came out 12 years ago, and it's stayed relevant through games, amusement parks, and the Fantastic Beasts movies.

Even as someone who grew up with and loved the books, I'm just baffled by them doing this so soon. Like others, it will be very hard for me to not make comparisons, especially to the fantastic adult actors.

Glad JK Rowling is involved or I'd assume they would attempt to "diversify" the characters a bit

This series won't come out until 2025 at the absolute earliest, but more likely 2026. That'll have been 15 years since the last iteration, and 25 years since it began. In today's media landscape that's an eternity, especially when Batman, Superman, Spider-man, etc have been rebooted numerous times since then. I know it's not apples to apples, but still. As a corporation, it would be malpractice to go that long without utilizing one of your top assets, given that no one really cares about the Fantastic Beasts movies.

All that said, I'm agnostic toward the Harry Potter franchise itself (I had already aged out by the time the first one came along, though I still saw all the movies), and, personally, I'd rather WB not waste their time and money on something like this.

If done right it will easily be their 2nd most successful show after GoT so probably not a waste of money in their eyes. It just hurts all of us fantasy nerds itching for a new adaptation. I'm more angry and Amazon pissing massive chunks of money away for garbage productions. HP is still a huge IP that has unfortunately been squandered with the fantastic beast movies for the past decade.

If they had done the dumbledore Grindewald storyline justice those movies could have been huge. Instead they made a confusing mess of a storyline that was really poorly done, especially after the first one.

I was right in the pocket for the books and they just never did it for me. Never finished the first book. (And I liked reading.)

Movies are meh. Have never felt the need to rewatch any of them.

Honestly a reboot makes financial sense, but you'd think they would go the route of a sequel series instead.

Grew up with the books and films. Love them to death.

Despite their faults as adaptations, these movies, including their aesthetic and feel, to me, *are* Harry Potter. To what degree will that change?

Casting, especially for the adults, will be important. How do you replace a Gary Oldman as Sirius, or, my goodness, Alan Rickman as Severus? I feel bad for any actor they cast there. It'll be hard to not just do an Alan Rickman impression.

And you do not touch John Williams' theme. It's as iconic as the franchise itself.

On the whole I'm excited for a new and fresh take. But want it to still feel like Potter.

Good thoughts, especially regarding the adult actors.
I suspect books 1 and 2 might be condensed into a single season, and some of the later books could even be multiple seasons if you wanted.
Another thing that could be interesting, is imo you wouldnt necessarily be beholden to keeping the same actors as the youngers characters age. It worked for the movies, so Im sure it could work for the show. Just always seems like a crapshoot hoping child actors not only are decent actors, but age well too.

Your blinding hatred of Daniel Radcliffe is odd, even by Internet standards.

I'll defend those books as close to perfection until my dying days. The movies went off the rails with #5 and were messy for most of the way home, but watching that reunion last year on HBO Max made me much more emotional than I thought I would be. Definitely weird to put into another format so quickly, but I guess the Fantastic Beasts have been such a disaster that they've got to do something.

I'm of the mindset that your timeframe for rebooting properties the likes of Harry Potter (geared towards kids, created such a huge cultural impact and memories in those kids) should line up approximately with the kids of your initial fanset. If I fell in love with a film when I was 10 then revisit that property when I'm old enough to have a 10 year old to experience the reboot with.

The first Harry Potter will be approximately 25 years old when this comes out if TCTTS is correct in his timing. More or less right for someone who was 10 years old in 2001.

Does that make sense from a purely monetary viewpoint? No. But isn't everyone on this board always complaining about Hollywood going back to the well too often? Everyone's always supposedly yearning for new properties, right? If we're serious about that then we shouldn't want Hollywood to reboot the same old franchises every 12-15 years (reboot being different than sequels obviously).

If they need to do something right now in that world, a Marauders series could work. It's probably the top thing fans have wanted. It could follow a similar/familiar-enough formula too of them meeting each other at school, going through rough times (werewolf, the Black family, Voldemort's rise), etc.

Very similar to how many GoT fans want Aegon's Conquest (which I just read may be in early discussions). Shouldn't be this hard for execs to know what will make them money.

Among the casting and music I wonder what they will do with the look and feel. The movies have such distinct costumes, sets, and props. I wonder if they will try to do something new or embrace the feel of the movies.

I've always thought that made the most sense. Either Marauders while at Hogwarts, or original Order era stories in the fight against Riddle/Voldemort. Familiar characters, familiar stories, but still original in many ways.

I actually hated the overall feel of movies 4-8. I personally thought Prisoner of Azkaban perfectly encapsulated the atmosphere I always had in my mind when reading the books. Yes, a little dark, but also very quirky and fun. Not completely washed out and hard to see.

The whole allure of the Wizarding world, for me, has always been the charm of the the world Rowling created. None of it stands up to ANY critical scrutiny, and hardly makes sense. I love those books because they are so charming and the world is just fun.

more likely the Weasleys will all be black, since redheads are always replaced by black actors lately.

And Hermione will likely end up with Ginny rather than Ron.

and just wait til you see wat they do with the Elder Wand.
Black is the New Red?

DallasTeleAg irrationally hating someone who is considered, hands down, one of the nicest, most considerate people in all of Hollywood sounds about right to me.

And threw the creator of the entire world that made him famous under the bus for her very rational views. And that has nothing to do with me finding him annoying. Such a nice and considerate person.

And I said I don't hate him, and especially don't "irrationally hate" him. But hey, here's the king of irrational hyperbole spewing his standard inflammatory crap on the forum.

One of my kids was a huge HP fan. I just didn't make time for the books and there was no way to reasonably condense books of that length into strong feature length films that properly represent the source IMO, so I thought the movies were a bit of a mess. So i'm glad they are doing this.

As far as JKR is concerned, anyone that looks at what she actually said/wrote and gets upset is absolutely bat**** . That includes Radcliffe.
