So, how's HBO compared to Netflix these days?

Only ever had Netflix, wondering if HBO is an adequate replacement.
I suppose that depends on whose content library you like more. HBO Max has the majority of the Warner Bros catalogue, HBO shows, and Adult Swim. If you have kids, it has Looney Toons, Cartoon Network, and Sesame Street. Still no word on how the Discovery content will be merged in or if that will remain a separate streaming platform

Thank you for the detail

HBO Max has blown Netflix out of the water for at least a year now. Netflix is probably 4th place at best in terms of content of streaming services.

Sigh welp, I guess 1 test month subscription coming up

Comcast had lousy reputation for customer service so I can understand why they rebranded as Xfinity.

But HBO is a great brand. I can't understand what they think spending millions on brand awareness for this new brand will get them that spending millions promoting HBO wouldn't.

Yup. HBO has been a mainstay since the 80s and now it's MaxiPad...err...CineHBOmax... Makes no beaver dam sense. Atall.

Apparently the new overlords are concerned that HBO is too fancy and exclusionary of a name. How else can they hock Dr. Pimple Popper and **** Island alongside Succession and True Detective if they don't ditch the HBO name?

I really don't understand this move. The HBO is where the brand is, and they're choosing Max? Maybe it plays better in international markets?

So dumb… My first thought was CineMAX

Cinemax is owned by HBO. When they went to HBOMax, I thought they were merging the two brands (they didn't) , but who would have thought that when they were deciding whether to choose the name, they went with the one more closely associated with The Erotic Traveler, Lingerie, and Sin City Diaries instead of Sopranos and The Wire.

HBO is the first name most older, American people think of with premier programming and they are dropping that from the name. Maybe it will roll better with international.

I liked Banshee, The Knick, and Strike Back, but yeah going with Max is puzzling.

They could have at least done it like this...

Even if losing the HBO name was a must, there were definitely other options on the table...

- Warner Discovery
- Warner Max
- Warner+
- WBD

... and whatever else along those same line. Also I get that blue is more "trustworthy," but making the branding *less* distinguishable from the others doesn't seem like the best strategy...

They should have gone with orange for innovation. Blue makes me think of hospitals and Ford.

Or jumbled the letters together -

MAXBO

I would say that the above is absolutely true through the first 2/3rds of last year. I haven't been interested in anything from HBO for a long time. And except for the final season of Barry and whenever Righteous Gemstones comes back, I'm not very excited about the future either.

As for Netflix, I'd say they've gotten back to what they do best. We've watched several new things lately that have been good.

And this whole rebranding effort just reeks of giving complete control to corporate marketing eggheads with no balls to be daring. All they know how to do is read charts and reports and focus groups and make the "safe choice".

I feel the exact opposite. I honestly can't remember the last time I watched anything on Netflix. Stranger Things? Feels like they've fallen off a cliff in terms of quality, save for that show.

According to Morning Brew, the point of the rebrand was to attract a wider customer base. People looking for non-scripted/reality type content which many people may not realize they have in their catalog.

Based on a quite popular bookseries. Started out on the BBC and then Netflix took over. The first 2 to 3 seasons were fantastic, seriously worth watching. After that the original scriptwriter left and the writing went downhill.

I talk TV every day of my life, with the people who make (and obviously watch) it, and I've never once heard a single human being mention The Last Kingdom. I fully admit to being in a bubble in that regard, but I'm also someone who's at least aware of, say, 90% of what's on TV, in terms of scripted series.

Wait, was there a movie or a spin-off or something released in the last couple of months? With a colon in the title? If so, I think I do remember someone requesting I add it in one of my recent monthly trailer threads, but I added it without watching the trailer.

Wow, really? It got a ton of attention on this board too, so it's quite surprising you'd never even heard of it. Even if it's not necessarily a show you'd like, it's one most have at least heard of.

Great show, IMO.

Yeah kind of a final send-off movie for the show, it's coming out this week or next I believe.

Really, Seasons 1 through 3 were actually very good if you like historical fiction. I think because it's centered around vikings and it came out well after the shine had worn off of the whole Viking thing on TV that it fell through the cracks and wasn't noticed by a lot of people. But it really is better than any season of The Vikings show that started the whole craze.

Things I've watched on Netflix in the last 1.5 years. The quality of many isn't on par with HBO shows, but there are some great ones and a lot of decent ones to work through.

New Releases
Witcher Season 2
Cobra Kai Season 4
Peaky Blinders Season 6
Last Kingdom Season 5
Stranger Things Season 4
Dahmer
Shadow and Bone Season 2
You Season 4

Old
The Magicians (5 seasons)
Lucifer Seasons 1-3
Dark Season 1
Fear Street trilogy
Versailles (all seasons)
Community (all seasons)

Others (including those from 2 years ago, things I haven't watched, or things I'll keep watching when a new season comes out): Sex Education, Squid Game, The Queen's Gambit, Mindhunters, Narcos, Ozark, the crown.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4179452/

8 seasons, 8.5 rating on IMDB, Season 1 87% RT, 93% audience

But it is based on books, so that is usually your Achilles Heel.

Don't like sci-fi, never got into Succession and I thought the first season of White Lotus was better than the second. I'm sure those are fine shows but HBO had an especially good first half of 2022 with Barry, Righteous Gemstones, Julia, Winning Time, The Staircase and Hacks.

Netflix's scripted movies and series will never measure up to HBO but they've gotten back to doing more docuseries that range from good to great. Just recently watched the Murdaugh Murders, Madoff, Full Swing (Inside the PGA), Ghislaine Maxwell, Keep Sweet, Pray and Obey (religious cult), Sins of Our Mother and Waco: American Apocalypse.

Is this a case of "go woke go broke"??? So many shows on HBO Max have unnecessary LGBTQ+ scenes and characters whose sexual orientation is inconsequential to the plot of the show. Last of Us is a prime example.

They are trying to cast the widest net and branding more of their low brow stuff to attract Joe the Plumber.

At the risk of turning this into a political thread, how on earth is HBOMax rebranding to Max and changing their color scheme from purple to blue a case of going broke because they went woke? Are you seriously thinking they had to do this because some of their shows featured gay people and now they're going broke?

Relax Francis. I'm saying that they are "rebranding" because the previous brand doesn't work. They're losing viewership, not really going broke. But I'm asking, by them possibly alienating 50% of the population with LGTBQ shows, is it hurting their bottom line?

TBH, I like HBO Max, but I saw absolutely no need to Episode 3 of The Last of Us other than to try to promote a LGBTQ agenda. Seriously, that storyline added absolutely no value to the main story. It made no sense that they would do this, but I know it pissed off a lot of viewers who don't want LGBTQ stuff thrown in their face.

I, however, continued to watch the rest of the show.
