The other thread got me thinking. I'm proud to say I'm protective of my kids, but even the best of us F up from time to time. So name a movie you've taken your kids to and regretted it.

For me: Mortal Kombat 2021

I thought it was going to be like the first films except with better graphics. (This is where skipping the trailers can bite you in the ass.). I knew something was off when the previews were legit horror movies. For a moment, I considered walking them out. But I didn't want to admit my stupidity so my 8 & 9 year olds got to hear the most foul language of their short lives in a two hour period. There was also some over-the-top gore…but at that point, I was already screwed with the wife.

I still take **** for this one today.

My wife still gives me **** for taking the kids to see Cocaine Bear when she was out of town. They are in Middle School so I still don't think it was a big deal. My dad took me to see Alien when I was 8 and I was traumatized for months afterwards.

The worst though was when my wife and I were going to see I, Tonya and at the last minute our friends couldnt babysit our daughter who was 8 at the time. We ended up taking her with us not knowing the movie would have violence and cursing. The kid taking tickets asked her age and I said 13 and he didn't say a thing. My daughter put her hands over her ears every time the cussing started up and my wife slunk low in the seat out of embarrassment.

I have been told I should be ashamed for binging Rick and Morty with the Demon Spawn.

But I am not.
Nor I am ashamed of Breaking Bad.

My dad took me to see The Shining when I was 6 and An American Werewolf in London when I was 7. I challenge anyone to top that.

Older couple from church was baby sitting us when my mom had to be hospitalized.

They took us to the movie. The only thing playing was Walking Tall.

We left after the opening seen. I still remember that scene pretty well. I was 5.

I learned what not to do from my dad, who took me to see Alien when I was 12. That movie messed me up. Scariest movie I have ever seen. Generated many sleepless nights over the next couple of years after I saw it, and I even continued to have the occasional nightmare even into adulthood.

So I have never taken either of my kids to any movies they weren't ready for.

I knew adults that weren't ready for it.

I'm taking notes. Got a kid on the way in June.

I saw some movies too early myself. The three scenes that come to kind:

- the Rock, face-melting chemicals (I was 8)
- Braveheart at a friend's house, dropping that ball and chain on a guy's skull (age 8)
- Eraser, watching the old man from Babe put a gun in his mouth and pull the trigger (age 11)

I'll try and avoid that for the kid!

Not quite the same but my mom was big on trying to find the next best weight loss pills around the time Requim For a Dream came out. I completely forgot about some of the artistic liberties taken when recommending that she see that movie. She called me the next day complaining that I didn't warn her and she had watched it with my 8 and 13 year old brothers.

Dad took me to Poltergeist when I was 8. That's close but The Shining at 6 is gonna be tough to beat.

Myself: when I was 9 my cousins and I convinced my grandpa to take us to see Austin Powers in theaters. He fell asleep and the fembots scene changed my life.

A more recent/frustrating one was a month ago when I went and saw Scream 6. The only other people in the theater (it was a Tuesday) were a dad and a girl that looked to be about 6. She had no business seeing that as it had a ton of gore and blood.

Gremlins ****ed me up when I was little. Watched it by myself in the dark in my parents' room. My parents and brothers were downstairs watching a non-kiddie movie. I couldn't even build up the courage to run downstairs… I was paralyzed with fear.

My dad took me to go see Starship Troopers when I was 12.

I got to hear, "Look down!" on those 2 occasions.

Not my kids but when we were seeing Team America: World Police two different groups of people with kids left very shortly after it started. Made me chuckle.

Wanted to expose the young'ns to a little European culture, so I took em to an art house showing of A Serbian Film. The tickets weren't cheap, so of course we stayed for the whole thing, but I probably should have researched before purchasing.

My parents took me with them when they saw both Coming to America and Good Morning, Vietnam in the theaters. I was just shy of 10 when I saw Coming to America, and Good Morning, Vietnam was released about 6 months earlier.

I also saw Dead Poets Society and Steel Magnolias in theaters. I don't think I fully comprehended what happened in Dead Poets Society.

Worked at a daycare in the early 80's and trying to explain to parents how we took kids to see a pg rated movie, The Beastmaster was quite an adventure.

It wasn't the worst thing, but we took my 10 year old son to see The Watchmen. We were unaware of the full frontal nudity of Dr Manhattan. Oh well....

Jaws in 75 messed up 12 year old Mathguy in a bad bad way. I did not like getting in the water at a beach for a very long time.

Not about me and my kids, but my mom and me. We were stationed in Okinawa in 1964...dad was TDY in Viet Nam...I was 5. My mom and some of the other neighborhood moms were looking for something to do on a Saturday afternoon. They saw that a movie titled "The Birds" was showing at the base theatre, and assumed it was a nature flick...didn't see that it was by Alfred Hitchcock. I don't know who was more traumatized...the moms or the kids. When the movie goes to the old man's bedroom and see that his eyes are pecked out, that was the final straw...we all walked out. Later in life, I'd do something boneheaded and I'd say "you shouldn't have taken me to see "The Birds" when I was so young...no telling how messed up I am!" My mom and I still get a kick out of remembering that.
I went to see "The Exorcist" with some friends when I was 15. I don't remember it scaring me that much then, but watching it later bothered me, especially some of the scenes that were left out of the original move, like the crab-walking scene.

I have no idea why but watching Aliens on thanksgiving was some weird family tradition for a while so I know I watched that by at least 1st grade or younger.

My daughter isn't old enough for the movies yet but will be interesting to see what mom lets me get away with.

Similar. I think I was 6 or 7 when it was playing on a VHS at home.

I took the whole family to see Alita: Battle Angel. Kids were 5 and 15. The kids seemed fine, but some ugly ass woman jumped out of her seat the minute the credits were rolling so she could parent shame us as she walked by.

Total Recall when I was 8 or 9 is the memorable one for me, but we watched tons of movies like that when we were young. . I remember my friends and I being fascinated with the girl with 3 boobs.

Your kids will be fine. They already know all the bad words anyway.

Parents took me to see Bram Stokers Dracula at 12. I don't think they were expecting all the T&A, didn't bother me at all.

Growing up roughly half an hour from the beach, I was a regular beach-goer. Then I saw Jaws. I think I went to the beach maybe 2-3 times for the rest of my childhood. Because Jaws taught me that there are things in the water. Things with teeth. Things that might just take a bite out of my ass. Nope.

Not a theater trip, but I let my young boys watch Angels in the Outfield a few years ago. They were probably 5-7ish.

Had forgotten how much cursing, smoking, and drinking there was for a kids movie. And the whole premise of the movie is a dad doesn't want his kid and even rejects him at the end. My oldest was confused on why a dad wouldn't want their kid. I had numerous questions to answer on why a dad could be that way.

Meh, I've been watching horror movies with my dad since I was old enough to remember. Gremlins is our family's Christmas movie. I think I saw Alien for the first time when I was 5 or 6.

Ouch. I heard that one is definitely not for kids. Some folks say it's not really for adults, either.
