I just finished it and enjoyed. Got the typical Netflix cheesy and some over the top but enjoyed the political behind the scenes storyline. Something different. Keri Russell is always solid in showing her butt.

That butt carried her thru, The Americans.

Figured if I didn't mention it this post would be a lame duck. Also for being a political show I never noticed a political slant. Pretty neutral. Refreshing.

I'm probably in the minority in that I really dislike the trend of nudity & sex in shows in general. But I think this comment is unfair to her performance in The Americans. It was a cherry on top for a lot of viewers, sure, but her acting chops were excellent.

Agreed. I'm not a prude but it gets old that every single series or movie has to have a sex scene in it. It's like mandatory now.
What you say, Paper Champion? I'm gonna beat you like a dog, a dog, you hear me!

Yup, she's a good actress butt, I've never seen any TV show where the female protagonist showed her tail so many times.

There was an unmistakable political slant with the references to current events

Yeah really liking this series as well. I think the plot and writing is pretty good. I really like how they intersperse "human" moments into the episodes.

I read somewhere that it was being compared to a modern day west wing. That is a mighty big comparison that I find hard to believe. Thoughts?

We just started west wing for the first time and are in early season 2.

WW thus far is exponentially more political and standard "left good, right fascists" than the diplomat. There is a mix of serious and comedy, but minus the hokey drama of WW.

Through 5 episodes of TD and only a few one liner biased references.

It's a very fun show.

She doesn't show her butt THAT much!

On a side note...there was this one line where they were talking about an aging President and something about the (female) VP "blowing it". I just about lost it laughing....they knew what they were doing when they wrote that!

I "cackled" at that too! And something was said about an elderly president with an incontinence problem.

Saw the teasers for this show and it looked promising, but if it has that much of a snarky vibe to it then I'm definitely going to give it a shot.

I'm 4 episodes in. Enough to keep me interested to continue, but the plot and her ability to be amongst all the major players at all the right times is a little too fantastic. I have enjoyed watching all of the diplomatic protocol she's expected to go through.

Also, I think there are plenty of real-life political references injected, but they're not too much in-your-face about it. Indirect references to Trump, Biden, Bush and Gore already that I've seen.

Just finished season 1. Not the greatest show, but overall worth the watch. 8 episodes isn't enough. Cliff hanger ending so I'm guessing season 2 is coming soon.

Honestly, kind of saw the ending coming. You knew it wasn't Iran or Russia.

I don't think the PM did it. It's the lady behind the scenes running the show. She has a reason for it, but we don't know it yet. Maybe she's trying to get herself into a government position by orchestrating some previous predictions into existence and meeting herself look like a political genius. Pretty sure she's pulling strings all over the government, and she is the one who had the MP's car blown up because Kate told her he wanted a meeting. I'd bet she's manipulating the PM and he doesn't realize he's a pawn.

Started last night with episode 1 and I'm enjoying. I'll probably binge the rest over the weekend.

Really enjoy this show.
It's smart, has a ton going on without (at least by TV drama standards) the over the top drama or pointless cliff hangers.
And the relationship between Keri and her husband is fascinating.

I'm almost finished watching it, but at times it just borders on silliness.

For instance: Her fight with her husband in the woods. Her husband's interlude with the foreign secretary's sister. The President almost drinking "coffee". A few other things.

I would have been fine with a more straightforward "West Wing" type of approach, because I do find the story interesting.

Count me in. I'm 5 episodes in and really enjoying it. I think the tone and pacing are really good and I appreciate the messiness of the human emotions/feelings. Big fan.

The Diplomat is enjoyable but nothing like the West Wing and not nearly as good. The humor is a bit too forced and the writing isn't even in the same ballpark.

And while the WW does have a left lean, there is always someone to call them on their **** usually. Of course Democratic characters are going to hate the left, but the GOP characters have a certain hero vibe as well. Think Ainsley, Joe, and even Walken. They ended up being respected by the Dems.
If you say you hate the state of politics in this nation and you don't get involved in it, you obviously don't hate the state of politics in this nation.

Loved WW but those were just straw men.

Bring in a conservative that makes a liberal caricature of the actual argument for Toby or Jed to knock down.

If they weren't straw men, the term just shouldn't exist.

People forget. Tv shows back in the day had years to have their characters grow into their parts. Go back and watch the first few episodes of the WW, it was really stilted (and I loved the WW). This show is ahead of that pace. Whether it continues to grow into itself, we will see.
To the point about some of the over the top stuff, I agree. But that was why I made the caveat of comparing it to other TV. It's still way way better than most of the contrived nonsense we see.

Besides the obvious similarities to West Wing when you watch the show, the writer of this show was a staff writer on West Wing

When I binged it, I lost track of the episode I was on and I thought I had one left....that was a downer.

That was the writers' way of saying that "if you acted like these characters in real life, we would respect you"...but you don't, so we won't
