Speed, or True Lies?

Two action classics that came out almost within a month of each other.

I love both, but I might give the edge to True Lies solely because of Tom Arnold and Bill Paxton.

Speed has a FAR better score though. Never been a huge fan of True Lies' score.

True Lies for me.

One of those has Jamie Lee Curtis doing a smoking pole dance on a bed poster in a black push up bra and thong and one didn't.

It's not a contest.

Even Tom Arnold can't ruin that.

JLC was super hot in True Lies, but Sandy Bullock had this charming, cute vibe in Speed that really does it for me. She's never been more attractive than she was in that.

Will also say Dennis Hopper is the far better villain of the two movies.

Pretty tough contest actually. Both have great re-watch potential and great action.

True Lies definitely has some great comedy thrown in with the action….I'd say balanced perfectly actually….and Tom Arnold doesn't suck and Bill Paxton is great….

Speed has Dennis Hopper as a great villain, non-stop action (virtually no comedy though), and a non-wooden Keanu who actually did his own stunts like jumping on to a moving bus from the black convertible…..

I have no idea what to pick…..

Wrong. She was even hotter in Demolition Man.

True Lies is arguably in Arnold's top 2 or 3, and it is just entertaining as hell so I would definitely vote for that.

I'm sorry but Tom Arnold alone should immediately disqualify True Lies.

I agree that generally he's pretty awful but he was great in True Lies. He was perfect for that role.

it's not only his best performance, it might be his only performance where he's legitimately enjoyable

Both great flicks.

But does anyone even remember the villain in True Lies? What the plot of the actual action was? Arnold in a fighter jet in the final scenes is downright bad even by 90's standards.

Speed is the much, much better action movie.

True Lies has far better individual performances and is far more quotable. Paxton, Curtis, Arnold and Tom Arnold were all absolutely nails.

Main villain is a forgettable, standard terrorist trope. (Which is kind of the point, admittedly.)

Tia Carrere? Memorable, and so hot.

But that's kind of the point - True Lies is a comedy, not an action flick.

I loathe Tom Arnold, but he was great in this movie. It was well before he developed the mass psychosis known as TDS.

Where? Your topic asks which is the better action movie.

True Lies is bookended by two really hokey action sequences and even those include a splash of slapstick. For the vast majority of the film, it's a comedy/drama. Action sequences does not necessarily make it an action movie. Naked Gun series has far more action sequences than True Lies, but it's still a comedy.

So to answer your question, Speed is the better 1994 action movie because True Lies isn't an action movie, it's a comedy
