This will probably only appeal to maybe 10% of people here, but this afternoon I finally saw Past Lives - a romantic drama that's already getting all kinds of Oscar buzz, with a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes - that easily just became my number one movie of the year so far. It's just so well done, and so incredibly affecting, made all the more impressive by the fact that it's from first-time director, Celine Song. It's not a wide release, but is currently playing theatrically in most major cities, and should hopefully be on digital/streaming in the next few weeks. For anyone into this kind of thing, it's absolutely worth your time...

Watched this recently and absolutely loved it. I found it to be a thoughtful, quiet story of longing (but not regret) wondering what do we really want out of life and what could have been. It was beautifully shot and I loved the scenes of Nora and Hae Sung walking around New York.

Spoiler for the ending:
The final scene of them walking together into the past to catch his Uber, the insanely tense waiting period, and then Nora walking back into her present and future is as good of a scene as I've seen in a movie in years. Then it ends with Hae Sung driving off into his future, finally ready to let go of the past and embrace life. So well done and they nailed the ending.

I cannot highly recommend this movie enough. I really think people will love it if they give it a chance.

I also listened to The Big Picture podcast about it and found it very additive; it helped me clarify a lot of my thoughts about the film. The discussion between Sean and Amanda is really good and Sean interviews Celine Song, the writer and director of Past Lives at the end.

enjoyed it, but my goodness. I couldn't root for any of the 3 main characters. They all seemed hesitant to fully grasp the situation (but maybe that's the point!).

- SPOILERS BELOW -

Hae Sun - he managed to facetime Nora for a short period of time, but couldn't manage beyond that? The facetime scenes were touching and when she asked him to come visit her (she was clearly ready to take their relationship up a notch) then he bagged out claiming he needed to study Cantonese for his career. Dude, hop on a plane and get over there!

Nora - open up your feelings to both men! Encourage Hae Sun to be a great husband for his girlfriend. Tell Arthur you're thrilled they met at the writer's camp. I realize she's torn between the men, but tell them how you feel.

Arthur - during the tender scene when they were in bed, tell her you LOVE HER. Kiss her you fool!

Just finished watching it and holy hell I loved this movie!

I've seen 6 of the 10 Best Picture nominees (Anatomy of A Fall, Barbie, The Holdovers, Killers Of The Flower Moon, Maestro, Past Lives) and it is hands down my favorite so far.

I don't know how the director and actors weren't nominated. It has SO much emotion with such an economy of action and dialog. So much is said in the shots, in the silence and in the looks they give each other.

I am a softy that cries at a lot of movies, and this one got me good. Again, the brilliance of the level of emotion is can muster and convey with no explicitly said reasons why. There is such under current to the entire thing. When the Uber came and he turned to say goodbye and it flashed back, just for the briefest of moments, I physically convulsed with a weep. I was a wreck. And her breaking down at the end... still, on some level, deep down the girl that always cries.

Good lord, that honestly might be my favorite movie I've seen in a while, since maybe La La Land. I really hope she wins for Best Screenplay. I think she deserved a Best Director nomination for sure.

Total agree and really wished it had gotten a few more Oscar noms. Such a great film that will be seen as a classic, I think, in the years to come.

Tied for second for me with Anatomy of a Fall, right behind Oppenheimer.

Just saw this, and it's wonderful. It's not just a love story, but a tale of growing up, maturing, and changing. It's as much about letting go of the innocence of youth as it is the complexities of love.

How the lead actor who played Hae Sung didn't get a Best Actor nomination is beyond me. His character was multi-faceted, and he displayed it perfectly and convincingly.

After all my praise, my wife wanted to watch, so I re-watched last night with her.

How this didn't win Best Original Screenplay is beyond me. Much better that Anatomy Of A Fall. Also I would have given both leads a nomination and would have booted Scorsese out of the director in favor of Celine Song.

From an acting perspective there is just so much silence and so much conveyed in looks, plus acting across zoom, and it's done so incredibly well.

From a directing perspective, her use of silence and space is exquisite. It's very hard to pull that off without making a boring movie, but I've loved it twice now. And on second viewing I really picked up on much more, and loved, her use of visuals. The use of transportation and bridges to denote journey. The amount of doors and windows to conjure up perspective and "when one door closes another opens"/"when god closes a door he opens a window". The use of mirrors and puddles to play on reflection. Framing space and sometimes physical items between characters. It's just frickin amazing!

One random note I saw on a reel this morning, apparently the actor that played the husband and the actor who played Hae Sung were never allowed to meet or talk. When we see them meet in the movie is the first time they ever meet.

Watched this yesterday with almost no expectations, and it's one of my favorite movies of the last few years.
It's got so much emotional subtlety and relatability in it, without hitting you over the head with almost anything. All of the characters are real, no one is a hero or a villain. No big themes they force on you, just a great slice of life story..
Hard to believe it as a first time director. Big things for her coming I think.

I watched this over the weekend and haven't stopped thinking about it. The ending had me crying. What a film, and I'm kicking myself for not catching it on its initial run a couple of years ago.
