I've been trying to fill in the gaps on movies I've always heard about but never seen and looking for more that I may be overlooking. Some of the ones recently that fully delivered have been:

*Heat
*Apocalypse Now
*Heathers

Some that have fallen a bit flat for me have been:
*Raging Bull
*Casablanca

Completely agree on Heat. That movie blew me away when I finally watched it this past spring. The shootouts plus the Deniro/Pacino scene in the diner…epic.

Liked:
Lawrence or Arabia
Citizen Kane
Psycho

Didn't like (but I'm not against rewatching them now that I'm in my late 30s and am real real mature):
Chinatown
Raging Bull
Vertigo
Hub `93

A lot of folks say that about citizen Kane, and I get it. But that's a movie you kinda have to watch in context, almost every movie today is a descendant of it. Really the first movie with non linear storytelling, the makeup for aging was a huge jump, the cinematography and lighting are still the standard in many ways, the "Hollywood ending" surprise/tying the story together that do many movies copy etc. it's truly a revolutionary masterpiece, but given how movies have had nearly a century to improve on the formulas it created, it can seem flat. Watch it through that lens and it's great.

A couple years ago, I decided to watch some older sci fi and horror movies that I've never seen. I really enjoyed Psycho, Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Day the Earth Stood Still.

I finally watched 2001, Lawrence of Arabia & Blade Runner this year.

2001 was pretty spectacular especially given how old it is & the special effects were top notch. The ending was freaking bonkers like an acid trip or so I've heard...

LoA was great, cinematography & music superb among the best of all time.
The last 1/3 of the movie I felt didn't measure up to the beginning 2/3. Still very worthwhile to watch.

Blade Runner was excellent world building.... great futuristic vibe.

All three of these were much more of a slow burn than modern movies. You have to get yourself into the mindset of what it is going to be & eliminate distractions (not easy with kids/smartphone/etc) to appreciate older movies.

I only saw Ben Hur when I was younger and only once. But that said, it kept my attention for the entire time which is crazy when I think back about it.

That's a classic that has me sold.

Glancing at the IMDB Top 250 and noting my own standouts good and bad.

Lived up:
  • 12 Angry Men. Watched this one years ago and want to see again for sure. It was superb.
  • Seven Samurai
  • Paths of Glory
  • Amadeus

Fell short:
  • The Usual Suspects. Maybe I need to give it another shot, but it just didn't resonate with me on first view.

Citizen Kane was certainly the grandfather of cinematography. It revolutionized the medium. But as for plot, acting, etc: "meh."

I suppose a parallel would be Avatar1. Although Hollywood cant make movies to that $tandard often. But if its 2040 and all films are as immersive as Avatar, we could point back and say "they were the first to usher in this type of film."

Yes, this movie is considered a classic. Look it up on Wikipedia for all the greatest of all time lists it is on.

I first watched It's a Wonderful Life one night shortly before Christmas break while I was at A&M. Caught the very beginning when the galaxies were talking to each other. That seemed so unusual that it grabbed me and little did I know I was watching the movie featured on a TV screen in Gremlins.

About a year later Lawrence of Arabia was released theatrically, so I was blessed to get to see that on the big screen. Simply a great movie on all fronts.

I first saw Patton in about 1993. Another damn near perfect movie. My mom, who knew of my life long interest in WWII, was surprised I had never seen it.

Other titles that impressed the heck out of me include Judgement at Nuremberg, All the President's Men, The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Caine Mutiny, Fail-Safe, The Bedford Incident, Dial M For Murder, Vertigo, Rear Window, North By Northwest, The Flight of the Phoenix, The Godfather (1 and 2), The Manchurian Candidate, and many John Wayne movies like The Searchers and In Harm's Way.

Raging Bull bored me to tears.

There are some titles that I still need to watch, like A Clockwork Orange, Taxi Driver, and The Maltese Falcon.

It's a Wonderful Life.

I never had any interest in watching this until my kids were interested in watching it probably 5 years ago or so. Absolutely love that movie now and it gets me very emotional and nostalgic every time.

Back in 2009 when Qantas launched their A380, they did 38 years worth of Oscar winning movies so I finally got caught up on stuff like Midnight Cowboy, all the Godfather movies, American Beauty, Million Dollar Baby, Crash, The Departed, Slumdog MIllionaire.

Slumdog was great and Midnight Cowboy was good. Some of the others were just depressing or didn't live up to the hype.

More recently, I started watching some old movies with my daughter and frankly, I can't believe how good some of the old movies were:
  • Airport (the original from 1970)
  • The Network (1976)
  • The Candidate (1972)
It took me a long time to warm up to the car chase in Bullitt
