Held up to hype:
Giant, and got to see it on a big screen which made it so much better.
Godfather when I was old enough to see it and understand it all.
Dog Day Afternoon(not that old but a classic)
Omg we just saw Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf and it was the most amazingly, cringey, uncomfortable, horrifying feat of acting excellence. Speechless

Did not like Citizen Kane. there I said it.

Had already seen it, but got to see African Queen on the big screen and it was even more amazing. Still my favorite classic film because it reminds me of my parents.

Bolded came out maybe 2 years after The Godfather, but I guess you're technically right that it's not as old.

When in college I got into a foreign film hits phase from a section they had at 2-Day Video.

La Femme Nikita and The Vanishing were fantastic. Hollywood made their versions with Bridgette Fonda for LFN and Kiefer Sutherland for The Vanishing and they sucked.

Yeah, they're not that far away. Not like King Kong 1933 far away.

I have had to remind myself on this thread when seeing titles like Alien, CE3K, Jaws, and even freaking When Harry Met Sally... that there are plenty of folks here who likely were not born until the 90s, when I was already done with A&M.

I'm surprised I haven't seen more Kurosawa films on here under disappointment. I loved the handful I have seen (seven samurai, yojimbo , throne of blood, hidden fortress, but I feel like I consistently hear/read people say they dont hold up.

I should get around to watching some of his non-samurai time period films

Even as much positive stuff it gets, it's still underrated. One of my favorites.

The last movie that impressed me and left some kind of aftertaste after watching was the film "The Whale" by Aronofsky.

Same, I think Godfather "feels" older to me because the setting is earlier. But yeah.

The year 2000 is 10 years ago, right?

I forgot to mention Taxi Driver as completely holding up and blowing my mind when I finally saw it as an adult.

That is the one I meant.

Katherine Hepburn bought the rights to the stage play to make the movie.

Yes, a musical of sorts, High Society, starring Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra in the principle roles. The basic story is the same but some difference, still much of the dialog is word for word.. Overall not bad and some aspects I really liked but overall the original is superior., No singing of Lydia, the Tattooed Lady by Dinah Lord.

Finally saw Empire of the Sun a couple of years ago. Not sure what its reputation was, but I thought it was good.

It's probably highly regarded by those who actually remember that the movie exists. I think it is one of Spielberg's finest movies, as well as (yet another) master class in film music by John Williams. I just don't see many discussions on this particular movie.

More than kind of. The plot idea about the Vatican being mobbed up was good. Return to Sicily was good. Pacino, Keaton and Shire were good.

Garcia and Mantegna were over the top caricatures of mobsters.

And of course, Sofia Coppola showed whey she needs to stay behind the camera.

Turner Classic Movies is my favorite channel. Over the winter, I try to catch up on the movies that were DVR'ed over the past year. While not a classic, The Thin Man series was a fun watch.

I had a young Ag tell me Top Gun Maverick was the best movie he had ever seen. Needless to say, I got a good laugh out of that comment. I shared with him many of the movies previously listed in this thread, including 2-3 John Wayne movies.

I got on a kick of watching Oscar winners about 10 years ago. Didn't come close to getting through all of them but got me to watch some classics I probably wouldn't have watched otherwise.

REALLY ENJOYED:
- All About Eve
- It Happened One Night
- Marty
- The Apartment
- Gone With the Wind
- Casablanca
- All Quiet on the Western Front

GOOD BUT DIDN'T LIVE UP TO THE HYPE FOR ME:
- Unforgiven
- One Flew Over the ****oo's Nest

NOT BAD BUT MEH:
- Million Dollar Baby
- The French Connection
- Going My Way
- Hamlet
- On the Waterfront
- West Side Story
- Kramer vs Kramer
- Platoon
- Midnight Cowboy

GARBAGE:
- Tom Jones

I've been on a classics kick lately too, so many great ones that have been listed.

One that I thought not only holds up but has moved into my top ten all time is the Apartment. Witty, irreverent, heartfelt. Easily Billy Wilder's best. Romcom that wins Best Picture in 1960. Watch this as soon as you can.

The biggest disappointment was 2001 a space odyssey. I'll give it the special effects but story wise and pacing... what a freaking train wreck. Bored to tears and the ending...WTF. if you have to be on Acid to understand it then you failed as a filmmaker

In defense of Citizen Kane, what makes it a classic is much movie making and culture is built off of it. So many movies have built off of it, that it seems lesser now.

My wife loves westerns and she has introduced me to a lot of the classics. I am surprised how many of many sci-if books straight riff of them and how much I enjoyed them.

High Noon
The Searchers
The Man who Shot Liberty Valance
Shane

All were highly enjoyable.

I really liked Citizen Kane. Orson Welles performance was an all-timer. I also went into it with low expectations. The way I'd heard everyone talk about it I was prepared to be bored to death but I thought it moved along really well.

I respect that it was such a game changer, but I don't think I'd put it at #1 like a lot of lists do. Maybe #1 most influential but not #1 best.

These are my thoughts as well. Putting it into perspective, it was so influential….. but I have quite a few movies I would put over it as far as what I would call #1

Godfather 1&2 to start
Casablanca as well
Love the Maltese Falcon
So many more….

Including To Kill a Mockingbird…. But there is a bias there as Atticus Finch is a big reason why I became an attorney and probably my #1 hero in literature and the movies.

Not many on this thread I don't like. Maybe Raging Bull and Taxi Driver; but I liked them both, just not loved

It's A Wonderful Life is one of my faves as well.

Held up:

Zulu (1964)

I had always wanted to watch "Zulu" and this thread reminded me to do so. Found it free on Amazon Prime.

Although the actual battle scenes lack authenticity by today's standards, the movie holds up well. Lots of tension as the British soldiers wait to be attacked. And the movie builds out the characters nicely.

Plus, the scenery is beautiful.

I was late to the party (years after release) with 3 more recent "classics" in the "iconic career-defining comedy" genre:

Dazed and Confused -- *****
Rushmore - ****
The Big Lebowski - [fart noise]
