Yeah, I think the US pilot was pretty close to the British version. Michael Scott was almost immediately toned down. Still, "Diversity Day" and Kelly slapping Michael is probably my favorite scene of the series. Kelly wasn't an airhead at that point.

They were going to get cancelled and they said American audiences need Michael Scott to have redeeming qualities. Then 40 year old virgin came out and saved the show. They then made him a good sales person and threw in how good he was with kids at Halloween after butchering the Devin firing.

Yes, people are confusing reboot with sequel on here. A reboot would be redoing the show with entirely new characters. Example: The US version of The Office is a reboot itself of the UK version.

The first season of the US Office even largely follows the same story lines as the UK version before it branches off into new territory later on.

The network always thinks they know more than the creatives. So they get daily's and make recommendations and "notes". They went with the script of the UK Office Episode 1 to avoid it.

I would do the online filing for my old boss on jobs we had. Our ERP system wasn't set up to print to pdf, and would only print out on 11x17. So for a year, I would have to print every thing physically out in 11x17 sheets, cut it down to 8.5x11, then scan it back in so I could save a copy of the originals virtually.

I'm not quite that bad, but I do take a lot of notes on paper. My boss and a couple of the others in my department tried to get me to use the Todoist app and I tried it for a few days but I just couldn't keep up. When they asked me how it was going, I said I'd managed to turn off the notifications for it and that's about as far as I got.

Everyone is screwed anyways, as your phones are tied to the internet. You literally can't do anything in a lot of office professions when that happens. I usually can stilll work off the local server though.

There is a very good podcast out right now where Pam and Angela go through every episode (Office Ladies). I'm wondering if the success of that show and everyone getting back together to discuss the old episodes is driving this. I'm glad you posted this. I hadbeen listening to Office Ladies, and I'm almost through season 3, but it's definitely getting redundant. Thinking about just cherry picking some of the classic episodes rather than trudging through them all.

I switched over to Oral History after reading this, and it's really good. The first couple of episodes where he talked about all the hurdles they had to clear just to stay alive made me start to think...

I'm curious how other Office fans became Office fans. Who all started from the beginning because they knew the BBC version? Who got drawn in by Steve Carrell's popularity blowing up after 40-yo Virgin? Who just decided not to change the channel after My Name is Earl? Who got caught up in the video iPod craze? Did you jump in later after the show had already become a hit?

My fandom started from something I've never actually heard mentioned, but I assume I'm not the only one. The Office was a few years after Office Space, which wasn't a box office hit but gained a cult following. I was hoping that this show would have similar tone and feel to Office Space, and in some ways it did. Especially season 1, which was darker. The show hooked me on its own merit, but that was my mindset when I watched the pilot for the first time.

I started watching after it was over and on Netflix just by happenstance and then I was hooked. My family and I have been through it twice now.

I watched it because of the BBC version and was simply curious how they were going to translate it. I never finished it though. Stopped watching when Carrell left. I think there was only 1 season after that?

2 seasons without Carrell. It was all over the place for a while, but the 2nd half of the final season was pretty strong and had a great finale.

Started watching during either the first or 2nd season after a buddy recommended it. Never knew there was a British version until much later.
