just saw it again monday night on Netflix as a woman I was with had never seen it before

I remember going to the theaters to see this in Austin back in 1984 as a 13 year old. we all loved this movie and quoted lines from it all the time.

now it seems hugely dated- this movie in our woke culture would never be made or released

1. they literally use the word "f@gs" and "******s"

2. Jake's girlfriend is basically unconscious from alcohol/drugs and Jake says "I could have my way with her ten different ways if I wanted to"

3. Jake literally picks up the comatose drugged out girlfriend and hands her to Anthony Michael Hall

4. next morning, drunk woman doesnt' remember anything other than she did it with Anthony Michael Hall and "it was good"

5. Jake punches out Long Duck Dong for "grabbing my nuts"

6. selling views of Molly Ringwald's underpants for $1 to skeevy nerds

It wouldn't be a PG movie these days, but on the flip side you can see worse stuff now on what was called "basic cable" in the 80's.

I think about this all the time when watching movies from the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

I always hear this.. but it continued to happen well past the 80s. This claim is way too played out.

Friends made fun of gays in late 90s and 2000s, chandlers transphobia, fat shaming, Ross saying "Why is my boy playing with a Barbie", etc

Dave chappelle went hella racists and non PC all the time in his show in the 2000s, and he still does today.

Hell in late 90s on SNL, Dangerfield quoted as saying 'me turning 75 hasn't changed my view on women.. nah.. but turning gay, now that would change your view on women!"

lots of comedies from back then wouldn't be made the same way today. There's a reason there are fewer theatrical comedies being made today... people are looking to get triggered like this thread.

It took me until my mid 30s and probably a 75th watching of Sixteen Candles before I got the joke on the name "Long Duck Dong"

Probably still wouldn't get it if I hadn't been paying attention to the little brother saying "How do you think I feel? I'm sleeping under a Chinaman named after a duck's dork"

I didn't claim that Sixteen Candles wouldn't be made in the 1990s or 2000s

I wrote TODAY it would not be made and released.

that's how far the culture has moved from the most popular teen movie of the 1980s

which made John Hughes massively famous and rich.

you raise another reason this movie would never get released today

it both makes fun of China...which can never be allowed to happen in Hollywood.

and Long was actually Japanese.

are you implying that I was triggered?

it's the exact opposite- I think it's ridiculous and an embarrassment that Hollywood cowers in front of the Woke Crowd.

nothing wrong with this same movie that was literally a cultural icon for an entire decade.

Man, imagine being triggered because movies are less likely to play things like rape for laughs and calling it "woke". What a sad existence some of you people live.

But people have been making this claim for 20+ years.

My wife and I quote from this movie all the time. In fact, we just watched it with my girls on Netflix the other night and I thought the same - this movie could not be made today. It's a shame because I love it.

No, he's not ******ed.

People always bring up Blazing Saddles as a movie they couldn't make today, but I'm not so sure. It would definitely be risky, but even though the movie is essentially nothing but racist jokes, they are all done in a way that pokes fun at the racist. Outside of Gene Wilder, all the white people are morons. It's actually a very woke movie. I feel like if they were to release it today, you'd probably have a bunch of people on F16 complaining that the smartest guy in the movie is a Black guy.

Plenty of morons still love Archie Bunker and hold him up as some sort of role model so I'm not sure they'd see Blazing Saddles the way it was intended then or now.

I don't even think those are comedic scenes.

Also ironic & circular post.

You can walk up to a stranger and tell them your favorite movie is blazing saddles and no one would think twice. Its a classic and it seems like some of you missed the moral of the story. Django unchained had a similar plot and is fairly recent.

Movies that "couldn't be made" were just ones that were pointlessly offensive.

I watched this with my boys and forgot about the shower scene and had to do a quick fast forward.

Sam and her friend are checking out Caroline and they show it. Then I'm thinking...wait a minute...aren't they supposed to be in high school? Why are they showing high school chicks in the shower...fricking perverts in Hollywood!

Blazing Saddles isn't really that bad.

I tried to watch with my 18 year old and the pace just doesn't hold up anymore. We both got bored.

My 25 year old thinks it is the funniest movie ever. Showed all his friends and that was starting back when he was in college probably 19-20. They loved it too.

I think they actually find it funny to see the stuff said that you can't say any more.

Of course I raised my kids on 80s comedies - they've seen them all (I know Blazing Saddles was '74 but most great comedies are 80s)

My son got a kick out of the N word, but it was soooo slow.

He did tell his friends about it becasue he texted me and asked me what was the name of the racist cowboy movie.

They could remake the movies mentioned in this thread today, but I probably wouldn't watch the remake due to "modern" writing changes.

Does anyone remember watching Blazing Saddles on regular broadcast TV? It was heavily edited. Instead of the N-word they trimmed it to "Ni". I don't think I ever saw the un-edited version until I got to A&M in 1985.

On the other hand, I would like a remake of one 1980's movie
Dreamscape - a cool story with barely adequate effects, even adding better effects over the original would suffice
If they rewrote it, again I probably wouldn't bother watching it.

My feeling is that good Movie & Show story writing mostly died before 2010.
We have gone back to watch more late 1990s and early 2000s Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV shows for entertainment.
Thank goodness there is a bunch of them.

Funny to me to this day that Temple of Doom is PG, and shows child slavery/abuse, monkey brains, someone burning alive, and a beating heart being ripped out of a chest.

Then again it's the reason PG-13 was created.

Trivia: What was the first movie to get a PG 13 rating?
