You can walk up to a stranger and tell them your favorite movie is blazing saddles and no one would think twice. Its a classic and it seems like some of you missed the moral of the story. Django unchained had a similar plot and is fairly recent.

Movies that "couldn't be made" were just ones that were pointlessly offensive.

Disagree. While older movies may have indulged in stereotypes for humor, I think the general populace was actually capable of differentiating nuance. There is a difference in good natured vs mean spirited stereotyping and people could recognize intent rather than rushing to cancel anything that might offend anyone.

Funny to me to this day that Temple of Doom is PG, and shows child slavery/abuse, monkey brains, someone burning alive, and a beating heart being ripped out of a chest.

Then again it's the reason PG-13 was created.
Trivia: What was the first movie to get a PG 13 rating?

Incorrect. This was the first PG 13 movie released.

The first movie rated PG 13 was delayed until the end of the summer.

Underage nudity and statutory rape were staples of 80's comedies. Class, Wild Life, Fast Times, Last American Virgin, Weird Science (though I don't think they actually did it), etc.

None could be made today.

They remade the Bad News Bears and it was ok but the original is a classic.

Hollywood is obsessed now with avoiding any comedic takes which "punch down" instead of "punching up", which is why the same 10 approved jokes get told in every movie. Only a few productions will dare stray from that and they are routinely scolded for it. Hoping we will reach a time again when it is ok to laugh at anyone for any reason and not have it equated with violence.

Yep, and I grew up on these movies as did most people in our generation.

We thought this was normal and got a lot of our sex ed from these movies.

Seems like you're accusing fellow Aggies that post on that forum of being racist?
Many are. Sorry that it hurts your feelings, but I've been told that facts don't care about your feelings. Also, every person who graduated from A&M is not a "fellow" aggie to me. I've been treated like dog**** by other aggies on this very site.

I'd agree with TMoney on this.

My feelings are not hurt.

I'm sorry you've been treated like dog**** by fellow Aggies on this site. I've had a couple of Aggies treat me poorly in a professional setting. Found a photo of one in the Texas Aggie (Century Club) magazine advertising for the Executive MBA program after she had said some of the crap she said in my presence; I used that photo as a target for a dart board. Of course not all Aggies are awesome people, but in my experience, the vast majority are.

So what constitutes being a racist these days? I get some of the obvious examples. But would simply questioning why a particular president might consider only candidates of a particular race for specific positions be racist? Would suggesting that a popular fictitious character suddenly being portrayed as a different race as a reason for not seeing that movie be racist? What about a guy who tries to frame another guy for a racist act such as happened on this campus in recent years, would that be racism? Eventually, when everything is racist, then nothing is racist.

Blazing Saddles??? Oh my....

People always bring up Blazing Saddles as a movie they couldn't make today, but I'm not so sure. It would definitely be risky, but even though the movie is essentially nothing but racist jokes, they are all done in a way that pokes fun at the racist. Outside of Gene Wilder, all the white people are morons. It's actually a very woke movie. I feel like if they were to release it today, you'd probably have a bunch of people on F16 complaining that the smartest guy in the movie is a Black guy.

I watched it recently with my teenager, and I think it is just great satire it could probably be made today. I say this as a right leaning conservative.

Biggest issue is it would be very difficult to get that many white actors to use the N word.

How about a movie where a Naval Officer makes a well known bet with his best friend that he can assault a girl in the bathroom or at least on the premises? And an entire bar full of other military men support and help him?

The only difference between now and back then is that back then, people that whined about stuff told their friends who didn't care or wrote a letter to the newspaper which nobody read.

Today they put it on the Internet, and the lazy asses who call themselves journalists decide that it's a story and blast it everywhere.

Most people who don't get swept up in the snake-eating-its-tail disaster of social media and lazy journalism don't give a *****

If you something on TV or in a movie that's offensive to you, stop watching it. It's amazing how that solves the problem.

Yeah, I shouldn't have used that word. This is from one of my favorite movies of all time. I just think it's interesting that this scene would be received so differently today than it was in the great year of 1987. Turn and burn.

Richard Pryor wrote Blazing Saddles with Mel Brooks.
That's one of the reasons it flew even way back in '74.

If Chappell or someone like that was involved in a reboot, it would fly today.

I tried to watch with my 18 year old and the pace just doesn't hold up anymore. We both got bored.

My 25 year old thinks it is the funniest movie ever. Showed all his friends and that was starting back when he was in college probably 19-20. They loved it too.

I think they actually find it funny to see the stuff said that you can't say any more.

So, I've seen a lot of people watch a movie like Blazing Saddles and say, "Wow! I can't believe they could say this stuff back then!" Here's the deal, though. You couldn't say that stuff back then, either. That's a major part of why it's so funny.
