Just watched this. Wished I'd seen it in theaters. Incredible movie. It felt so much longer than 2 hours, but in a good way. They crammed so much into this movie without it feeling rushed or making the audience fill in too many holes. Just fantastic.

Although I am disappointed in the lack of diversity, netflix could have reshot some scenes for its pride month release /s

Had myself a Wyatt Earp/Godzilla weekend. Spurred by the Tombstone vs Wyatt Earp thread, I rewatched those and still came to the opinion that Wyatt Earp is a better movie, albeit one with a different focus.

I also watched Godzilla Minus One 4 times. I watched the theatrical release 3 times, the last time with my wife when she returned from her trip to Bandera. She agreed that it was a great Godzilla movie. I love what they are calling the B&W version: Godzilla Minus One Minus Color. It's a different viewing experience. The blue in Godzilla's fins are evident as a different shade of grey, but you might miss what is actually going on. You also won't pick out the little specks of glowing red on him after being hit with 15" shells from the Jap cruiser. Same movie just in black and white. A nice nod to the 1954 original.

I had a chance to watch this yesterday and really enjoyed it. A throwback to the old movies which I can remember watching as a kid at my grandparents house. I can't believe they were able to make this movie for $15MM. The acting isn't great, and the story isn't anything special, but the overall experience was still good. I think the acting and basic plot worked because they were going for the old school Godzilla experience, which they delivered on.

Watching G-1 got me in the mood to watch the monster universe again, hadn't seen them in awhile. The way us Americans have to inject humor into everything....G-1 had the "kooky scientist" but you never doubt his smarts or expertise, he was just a fish out of water around the military people. The way Skull island makes John C Reillys character is laughable, but not the way they were hoping

Watched it this afternoon. I think it's the best Godzilla movie ever made.

I also really appreciated how G-1 left the kid at home when it was monster time. No stowaway, no fake worrying that thr kid(s) will escape. I know you're not gonna kill any kids on screen, pg-13 Hollywood movie, so you having a bus full of them on a collapsing bridge in the middle of a firefight is just a distraction.

Making godzilla the good guy, or balance of forces is stupid for a first movie in a series. Kong made sense, but watanabe just having a hunch about godzilla is stupid.

Meh. Not nearly enough Godzilla wrecking shop. And, can we throw in some Blue Oyster Cult into the closing credits!

Really enjoyed this.

I'm surprised no one else has said this yet, but the way this was shot and scripted really felt like live action anime.

The expressiveness of the characters and cinematography straight up looked like anime but in reality. Hard to describe, but the closest comparison I can think of is Miyazaki's The Wind Rises

Watched last night. Would agree. I was going to say it was way over acted or badly acted but maybe describing it this way makes sense as well.

I was entertained by it but didn't think it was as great as everyone else does. I did enjoy some of the old school FX. Godzilla slowly and awkwardly walking along like he's sleep walking was funny. Straight up guy in a suit looking and I assume was just like the old movies.

Yeah that was pretty fun. The Japanese know how to do Gojira, respectfully

I liked the Odo version alot. Seeing him walk upright through the city with those arms did make me lol a few times.

Agree. I admittedly did it to myself, but this one turned out to be somewhat of a victim of higher expectations after seeing people's feedback about it. Acting was rough and the whole thing was pretty campy. That said, i did still enjoy it as a throwback.

I just watched this, then watched that fake trailer. If it's true that they only spent $15M on special effects, then I'm BLOWN AWAY. On my TV, everything with the city getting torn up looked ridiculously good.

Maybe you have to be a longtime fan of Godzilla movies to appreciate this? I'm not really sure what was so special about it? It was better than the Matthew Broderick one, but I liked all of the 2014, 2019 and ones with King Kong ones better.

The special effects were very good, but he still kind of looked like an Godzilla toy moving around.

Also some bad goofs. Like at the end the scientist and the fisherman were on the doc then instantly transported to a boat. And Godzilla standing in the ocean, but then it being miles deep?

Wait, so the ENTIRE budget was only $15M? I gathered from the honest trailer that the special effects portion of the movie was $15M. If that was the entire budget then that is even more amazing. I can't think of a movie that did more with less.

I thought it was funny that they chose to render it like it could have had a guy in it. I think it's clear they did that on purpose. The special effects were so good, they could have made it look however they wanted.

And regarding the standing in the ocean part. He clearly wasn't standing since they sunk his ass way down. They also showed that he wasn't standing in the water tank demo. I assume his fat ass was merely buoyant.

Finally watched the movie on Netflix yesterday - amazing! Loved the story arc and ending.

i did think it funny that the scientist wanted to titanic Godzilla but if that failed they would give him a good case of the bends

I finally got to see this and it was really good. I found the post-war Japan story very interesting, especially told from the perspective of Japanese film-makers.
