Didn't see a thread on this. Just got out and really enjoyed it. I'm interested in others opinions. My wife, 18 yo, and 15yo all thought it was great.

It is a warm and charming movie. It isn't going to change your life, but take your kids and grandkids. It is the type of movie Disney should have been making some of recently.

Took the fam last night. I thought it was good but wasn't wowed by it. The kids 14 and 12 thought it was great. For me being raised on the original Gene Wilder version it didn't measure up but good enjoyable film overall.

Been wondering about seeing this. Is it really a musical? What percentage of the movie is music/singing taking place? That might sway my decision.

I wouldn't consider it a musical. I would say 10-20 percent max is singing. With that being said, I thought the songs and placement of them were good.

The original was a musical. Did you like it? About the same percentage

I don't really remember it as a "musical", thankfully.

Same situation here. It's not The Music Man or Hamilton, but there are musical components. So, yes it would be considered a musical, just like the original.

We saw it last night and loved it. I wasn't interested until I saw it was the same writer/director as the Paddington movies. (And the writer has a similarly funny series of cameos in this one as he does in Paddington). It was genuinely funny, warm, and really smart.

Absolutely not. It's a pretty solid family movie. They'll enjoy it.

It would be just fine for 5-8 year olds. There is a villain but the villains weren't as scary as old school Disney fare. Instead of being doubly harsh, the 2nd part of their character was comedic or farcical.

I just didn't love this.

The 9 and 7 yo did, which is what matters.

But it was a largely inconsequential film that won't be remembered a year from now.

An easy way to burn 2 hours, and Chalamet was fantastic.

But definitely something we didn't need- would have been better off modernizing the original script.

Was surprised by this. Wife (40) loved it the most. Kids all enjoyed it. Well done and it actually added something to the series.

Was disappointed with Depp's wonka and had zero expectations for this going in.

Is it really star power or IP power. I don't know many who jumped to theaters to see him in Dune (I imagine Zendaya had more leverage on that front )

I believe neither. Just a prequel to the original story.

Good movie overall. Wife and kid (10) enjoyed it. A lot of really good but just not quite great components. Chalamet committed to the role. You feel the positivity as genuine though some acting feels a bit hollow. Songs are good and well done but not earth shattering. I remember the original come with me song as if it was yesterday. I don't remember one of the new songs a day later. The production and visuals are high level and the rest of the acting ranges from good to great. It's a feel good movie. No real gut churning moments. Some nice emotional rewards at the end. Only thing for me is how to reconcile the endlessly positive and personal version of Willy Wonka with the reclusive and cynical Gene Wilder one. What the hell happened in between?

Saw last night in an empty IMAX theater and liked it. Not the overwhelming entertainment but good story and would have loved a little more focus on a personal Wonka backstory but it should be seen in theater if you love going to the movies.

We saw this tonight. Some nice visuals and a few humorous moments.

Overall though it sucked and is on the "never watch again" list.

High bar for me, I watch the original (Gene Wilder) a couple of times a year.

Great movie, much better than most of the crap put out this year.

I swear Peter Ostrum (OG Charlie) was the zookeeper!

That would be fitting since he became a veterinarian in real life, but according to IMDB it's not him.
