It seems that he is never really considered a great actor. I've seen plenty of criticism against him over the years for certain roles.

I'm not sure what my opinion is tbh, but I can't deny that he's been a part of many good movies, some great.

I'd argue that he's fairly talented but somewhat fenced in by being shockingly good looking. Most of his characters fall within a spectrum from stoic, literally me guy to goofy fella, and he's good in that range. Not many of his roles have expected him to venture much beyond that...I can't think of a role where he was pushed much to go bonkers. A few instances as Tyler Durden. His acting as Jessie James might be his best / most nuanced. I'd put him in B tier as a good but not spectacular actor, but he's done many of the parts he's been given very, very well. Obviously, I liked him as Cliff Booth.

Thought he also showed a lot of range in A River Runs Through It, Legends of the Fall, Se7en just off the top of my head.
I guess he has mostly been in 'bigger' movies since 2000 but he is also one of the main reason all of his movies are watchable.
I think the same criticism can probably be applied to just about any actor once they get big enough

I am just a know nothing in the world of grading actors but I think he is amazing. Snatch and 12 Monkeys are by far the favorite of his roles for me.

I always thought of him as a decent actor with great ability to get attached to elite scripts and great movies. He's just good enough to hold his own but the movies he chooses to do end up being classics (with a few exceptions of course.)

He's had some great roles... Cliff Booth being my favorite. Loved him in Moneyball as well.

Pitt is a notch below the really great actors like Day-Lewis, Decaprio, Bale, etc.

I'd put him above such luminaries as Travolta, Affleck, Marky Mark, Common, & Nick Cage and more in line with guys like Harrison Ford & Matt Damon.

He's solid and I agree on the B+ grade. Fight Club is his best performance and he should have been nominated for best supporting actor.

Bill Simmons on the Rewatchables led the interesting discussion that Pitt's real strength is as a producer and realizing when he's right for a role vs when he should just be EP.

A good example is The Departed. He was inititally attached as a producer and to play Leo's role, but realized he was too old for it and stepped aside.

Brad Pitt is a good actor. Can play both dramatic and comedic roles which is not something you say about actors who are not good at their job.

While I agree with this in premise, he's also got an Oscar which generally takes you out of the "good" category.

I'd call that accurate. Ben Affleck has definitely proven to be a better director than he ever was actor

He's obviously not a Meryl Streep, Phillip Seymore Hoffman, DiCaprio, Hanks, Joaquin Phoenix, Daniel Day-Lewis level actor.

But his pretty good.
