Great movie star, good actor.
While I agree with this in premise, he's also got an Oscar which generally takes you out of the "good" category.
I disagree with this. Good actors can have great performances just like good athletes can have great seasons. Nobody is going to put Cam Newton or Matt Ryan in the great category of quarterbacks because they won an MVP.

Who's the better actor Brad Pitt or Robert Downey Jr.?

12 Monkeys alone makes Pitt the GOAT. DiCaprio is overrated.

Agreed.

He's been nominated 4 times.

He's a good character actor (Basterds, Fight Club, 12 Monkeys). I think he can fall flat in more serious roles (Benjamin Button, 12 Years a Slave, Big Short).

I think he's a good actor; I would not call him "Great".

For me, Pitt never takes me out of a scene, but I have never been floored by a performance. He chooses a lot of very good roles and is in a lot of great movies.

Interesting question comparing him and RDJ. I would actually think they are both the same caliber of actor, though I may give RDJ the slight edge due to Tropic Thunder. I've never seen Pitt in a performance that outdid RDJ in Tropic Thunder.

Brad Pitt has been nominated for 4 Oscars, twice for best actor, and twice for best supporting actor. He's won 1 Oscar for best supporting actor for once upon a time in Hollywood. He won best supporting actor at the golden globes for 12 Monkeys. He's also been in 5 movies that were Oscar nominated for Best Picture.

That's a pretty impressive resume and I would say that being nominated for an Oscar 4 times puts him in that great category.

I thought Fury was a one of his best movies that is overall pretty underrated.
Fury was great
It was great, minus the terrible ending. One of favorite WWII films without question.

But even then, they just had to have a scene with him shirtless. And his hair was always perfect. Perfect after not showering for probably weeks and wearing a tanker helmet. IMO, it took away from his role.

Man - loved Burn so, so much. Definite movie star, 70/30 Great to good ratio, especially reading on the award accolades present in this thread. Good discussion. I like his comedic stuff A LOT.

The scene with his shirt off was incredibly moving and one of the best scenes of the entire movie. (no homo)

But I do agree that it's one of my favorite WW2 movies and while not as good I'd put it up there in the same tier as Saving Private Ryan.

Brad Pitt is great in roles that are just basically expansions of his own personality -- J.D. in Thelma & Louise, River Runs Through It, Legends, Oceans, Fight Club, Basterds, Burn, Big Short. Those are all him.

I still wouldn't put him in the great category. I wouldn't put Will Smith or Nick Cage in the great category either. I do agree with the good actor, great movie star label though.

Not great comparisons - he's way better than them.

That would be like saying that steak isn't a great meal, but I wouldn't put tuna casserole or Skittles in the great category either.

I'm not sure how but I completely forgot this film existed - yet I loved it when I watched it. Big Coen brothers fan too but I haven't seen this in years maybe since it came out.

Pitt was great and Malkovich of course but JK Simmons might have been the best in that ensemble cast. I just rewatched the full trailer and remember his part killing me and he's not even on the cover, the poster, or the listed credited actors on the trailer.

I think Pitt is in the same category as Smith but above Cage. I just don't think Pitt belongs in the same category as Hanks, DDL, De Niro, Pacino, Brando, etc.

I've never watched a movie of his I didn't enjoy, and he makes acting look very easy. He can play a range of characters, and has a decent range of genres.

And his best role is from True Romance.

I'd argue that he's fairly talented but somewhat fenced in by being shockingly good looking. Most of his characters fall within a spectrum from stoic, literally me guy to goofy fella, and he's good in that range. Not many of his roles have expected him to venture much beyond that...I can't think of a role where he was pushed much to go bonkers. A few instances as Tyler Durden. His acting as Jessie James might be his best / most nuanced. I'd put him in B tier as a good but not spectacular actor, but he's done many of the parts he's been given very, very well. Obviously, I liked him as Cliff Booth.

12 Monkeys as the unhinged eco-terrorist. Scared me half to death as a kid.
