Texas does have a franchise tax so I guess they could do a credit.

It's just a shell game. One state unfairly grants tax breaks to one industry. Eventually they wise up and cut back the incentives, and then Hollywood productions move on to the next state.

It's usually not the tax breaks that are unfair, it's the taxes that are.

The same was said about the steel and electronics industries. As government pushed the cost of living in America through the roof, those industries move out of the country for greener pastures. In the Godzilla Minus One thread someone pointed out it was made for like 15M or something. The movie is great and hard to see a significant drop off from a similar Hollywood movie that cost 10x more (google search budget for Kong vs Godzilla at 155M). I'm no expert but if the name of the game is profit at some point they will figure out a way to save some money.

You don't even know where China's film/arts scene is, so opinion disregarded. That, and lots of Hollywood productions have either explicit or implicit pro-military/patriotic messages due to the CIA and their private offshoots. Really unfortunate that it's so easy for NGOs and the media to create "enemies" like China out of thin air.

Yeah, it's true that if a movie - nearly always a blockbuster- is going to be shown in China, they can and will make demands of what they want excluded (or sometimes included); but personally I think the (physical) infrastructure for blockbusters has cratered so badly that I just don't expect anything out of them anyway.

But yeah everything from Jack Ryan to Top Gun isn't exactly shy about what it's promoting. Which is fine, idc, but to think Hollywood productions are anti-American is absurd. Even if someone is just referring to sh*tlib actors or whatever, who cares? All but a few of these people care about money before anything else anyway.

Speaking of Jack Ryan, God, I just remembered that one of John Krasinski's favorite authors is David Foster Wallace. I mean good Lord, I guess I have to respect anyone who can make it through his depression-soaked pages. His nonfiction is good though, but I digress.

The biggest issue I have to deal with in Atlanta is rain which you don't have a problem with in L.A. and Austin.

The big movie making area in the early days was in the NYC area. Movie producers fled to California to get away from the unions and for better weather. Many of the films were shot outdoors.

Kind of ironic that Hollywood was established to get away from unions.

I like trash and/or middlebrow stuff like everyone else (though mostly the former). It'd just be nice if this board had more discussion around the best domestic and international productions each year. Whatever.

Idk, I rarely find things on here that really click with me, but I guess I keep coming back because it's nice to post somewhere directly attached to A&M, which I began to feel estranged from as soon as I moved to LA. That, and honestly I feel that lots of people on here - dads, busy with their jobs, etc. - would never know about lots of this stuff otherwise, even if they formerly were cinephiles or had a greater than average interest in movies. Better to be a dbag when mentioning these titles than just another poster.
