It's interesting how hard they're leaning into Chaplin's character.

Really starting to think Jake dies in this one, and maybe even relatively early into the movie.

This is one of the few things that I will actually say that I can't believe people watch this ***** It's a bad story, underwhelming visually, and just all around brutal.

Agreed. Way of Water was the worst movie theater experience in my life so far. Way too long, and my seat wouldn't recline

Watched the first part of the two part making-of documentary on Disney+, Fire and Water.

I can't recommend it enough if you're any kind of fan of behind-the-scenes type stuff. It boggles the mind the amount of stuff they had to invent from scratch for all the underwater filming. They even came up with these mini propulsion tanks to mimic the tails.

Great doc.

Is the Avatar franchise underrated, overrated, or properly rated?

I thought I would hate these films, and when 2 (Way of Water) came out, I was sceptical. But man, 2 rocked my world. The family dynamic, new characters, and half the movie is an underwater nature documentary.

I guess the time between 1 and 2 hurts the franchise, the movie's length, and maybe too much world-building. I feel this franchise has owned the 2020's way more than Marvel or Star Wars.

Somehow it feels like all 3 at once.

Underrated: None of the movies get talked about much outside of the 2-3 month window of their theatrical releases, in spite of the massive box office success.

Overrated: Many of the franchise's critics would say the movies are undeserving of their financial success due to being derivative, formulaic, and purely visual and technical achievements.

Properly rated: Actual critic reviews seem to be pretty much in line with general audiences each time out. Great, entertaining movies with unmatched and immersive 3D visuals and spectacle.

They seem to me to be properly rated...event movies when they come out if you're just into special effects and big set pieces, but not really that memorable as time moves on due to forgettable characters and performances.

Good point. There is no real bad ass character, some larger than life hero figure. Also, I hate to say this, but there hasn't been a "viral" or "meme" moment to make its way around social media.

I'd push back on the performances part. Zoe Saldaña has been killing this role each time out. Honestly she has been worthy of Oscar noms every time.

True and don't disagree, Zoe and her bow are incredible. But it hasn't hit the mainstream, maybe because no one knows who the actors are. I had to tell my wife that Kate Winslet was in The Way of Water.

Visuals are 10/10.

The reason the Avatar movies don't get talked about outside the 2-3 month window is because they are derivative & formulaic AND lack good dialogue, acting, plot twists etc. Honestly all fiction is formulaic & derivative to some degree. For examples the Hero's Journey Formula: Harry Potter/The Matrix/Star Wars/Wizard of Oz/Alice in Wonderland/The Odyssey.

I liken it to Type 1 & Type 2 fun.
Type 1 fun for example is a roller coaster, watching fireworks, jumping on a trampoline. Gratification in the moment. Shallow. Movies like Avatar. Most Marvel movies. Star Wars sequels, etc.

Type 2 would be a tough hiking/hunting trip with your friends, climbing a tough mountain etc.
The gratification is meaningful & thought about for a long time. Deep. The Godfather. There Will be Blood. Master & Commander, Shawshank, etc.

IMO the series overall has been average, probably a 6/10. Like an average Star Wars movie. Cool visuals, some trouble & then a giant battle at the end that the good guys win. It would be nice if this one was the "Empire Strikes Back" of the Avatar series. I'll go see it, but I ain't holding my breath.
