How had i not heard of this crazy incident? I normally don't care for documentaries but I thought it was well done. I hesitate to post more for fear of giving away the story.

American Nightmare was an incredibly popular and influential hardcore band in the early 00s. Their singer wes was missing a hand.

Anyways my wife messaged me about this last night and is sucked in so I imagine I will be watching it in the near future.

Is this the one about Chris and Shannan Watts?

Edit To Add: My bad that one was American Murderer: The Family Next Door -- also good if you've never seen it.

These true crime doc series are kind of in my "Q-Zone"

Ya, that was really good actually.

That dude is the ultimate scum of the earth and hopefully there's an afterlife for him to rot in.

Started it last night and finished it tonight. I remember the first part being in the national news but had no idea how it ended up. Pretty crazy.

If you don't already hate the FBI, you will when you're done with this doc. You expect small town local PD to be a bunch of bumbling idiots, so it's a low bar. But the FBI is trash.

I always tell my wife the cops are not your friends, never talk to the cops, especially when innocent, etc. She used to think I was crazy until she watched this.

Also, I keep hearing about all the "good people" and "rank and file" who work for the FBI but 90% of what comes out of that organization is just pure garbage. Amazing how we just accept it as a country. Everyone *should be* demanding better but as long as one side is on the receiving end the other side will condone it.

Watched this in one sitting. Crazy ass story and the cops (local and FBI) were completely useless in this case…except for the police woman in another community that connected the dots.

This was a clear example of local enforcement trying to coerce a confession. Pretty scary.

So those in law enforcement that would be in the know -- is there not some widely used keyword database?

I guess it would be at the mercy of the individual departments actually inputting their data, but I certainly feel like there should/is a database that exists where one could query 'swim goggles california sexual assault' for the last 10 years and it would spit out the small number of cases that exist with those keywords.

Vallejo PD also infamously bungled some early Zodiac case evidence as well.

Pretty crazy how incompetent and destructive that pd was in this case and got off w only paying $2.5m in damages

Yeah well I don't mean it the way politicians do when they use it for nothing but a sound bite.

I mean if we had any sense as a country we'd drag all those bums into the streets where they belong.

Looks like the City of Vallejo gets sued a lot. A lot of the police leadership that was highlighted in this documentary are still in charge.

Crazy how bad the PD and FBI were. Very interesting and really wouldn't been hard to catch if they tried.

I wish they could've explained the connection to the ex-fiance a little more - both with respect to the perp and the FBI agent

Yeah that was weird. The ex was the actual target and she was, or did, date the FBI agent involved?

Show is over…all's well that ends well. Nothing to see here!

Also, every time they mentioned detective Matt Mustard I immediately though of "Clue."

IMO, this was a very important element of the story and they barely scratched the surface on it. And another piece of evidence supporting the incompetence of the FBI investigation. Again, IMO, the one weakness of the series but I still enjoyed it.

I was thinking the same thing- I guess if you aren't in California in 2015 maybe it was the Trump/Clinton election that was knocking it out of the news

just when you think the story is CRAZY, it get's crazier.

a lot of twists and turns.

I would think that now 8 years later with Artificial intelligence and 'big data'

that the FBI and county police database can do a better job linking with each other on cold cases

Another thing that wasn't 100% investigated was when she was captured at the cabin, she said she heard others speaking to Matthew Muller. She also said they left in a different vehicle.

Also the other 911 recording the lady talking about someone tried to get their daughter, she told the 911 operator her husband was fighting "them".

With respect to the perp, it did say afterwards that he has never revealed why he was after the ex finance.

I assumed he had been watching them and just became enamored with the ex. If I recall, they had only been dating for a month or so and it's possible that the perp didn't know she was no longer in the picture.

A more sinister explanation might be he actually was a kidnapper for hire and the FBI agent hired him. Unlikely but not impossible.

My wife and I stumbled across this last night around 730 and ended up watching all 3 episodes. What a wild story.

The dude was definitely messed up. To have the ability to rape yet pull out a moral compass on occasion was bizarre.

I really wish he would have divulged more about claiming the ex was the target. I'm going to just assume that he did some stalking and research but that way this story played out, I agree with the poster above that something more sinister could have been at play.

I don't practice criminal law, but I did take it my first year of law school, and was amazed at how unreliable so much of the evidence used against defendants is.

During the first week, our professor had an unknown person enter the classroom late, walk quickly down to the front of the classroom grab her purse then run out. She had set it all up...and asked us to write down what the suspect looked like. We were all "eye witnesses" after all.

She read some of the responses out loud...it ranged from "short and black" to "tall and Mexican or Asian"...and the description of the clothes he was wearing was all over the map as well. She also pulled aside 3 students and took them outside...where a teaching assistant sorta "guided" them to a consensus on what the person actually looked like. (their consensus was WAY off). It was a really great lesson in how our minds can play tricks on us and how unreliable our own memory can actually be sometimes.

Loved the documentary. Very well done.
