I think the documentary more than anything else shows how the news cycle can impact our opinion/memory.

I remember this story. I assumed it was a "Gone Girl" situation.

Never heard that it actually did occur. Because that wasn't as sensational, so it didn't get the same headlines/circulation.

Court of public opinion + news headlines make up what we assume is true often times.

Sort of. It doesn't always help you though if you are legitimately hoping to give them the information they need to find your missing partner. If you were in this guy's situation you have to talk to them or nobody is going to help you. He did come to the conclusion that he was being treated as the suspect way late, though.

Yeah, as soon as that detective told him he murdered Denise during the initial questioning he should have asked if he was under arrest and if the answer was no walked out and found an attorney. If the answer was yes, meet an attorney and make them arrest you.

There's a change.org petition for David Serna of the FBI to be investigated for any involvement in this case.

To me, he's the connection between Muller and Denise and Aaron. He wanted to show Andrea that his connections to cause major harm if she didn't play along real well.

Yeah there was a thread on another board following this that was deleted in a post purge, but It would be wild to walk that thread nowadays. I do believe that the truth came out and the media puppet got dragged pretty hard.

But this crime happened 9 months after Gone Girl came out in theaters. So crazy to have the cops think they figured it all out, not based on evidence, but based on a gut feel from a Hollywood movie.

But in addition to that....the entire crime itself was super bizarre. I still think that the FBI guy needs to be looked at.

This is messed up and really makes my blood boil with how they treated them.

Apparently Mustard has complaints about him that go back many years.

Just finished this tonight

Don't know how the audience score is so high.
There were a few funny parts but the satire went too far
It wasn't as funny as the trailer made it out to be

It wasn't a good movie and the movies message trolls us with a patently 2 years behind disclaimer

Stage R Leigh is a badass name though

I think your post is about "American Fiction." This thread is about "American Nightmare," a documentary on Netflix.

Definitely weird. She had a duffle bag when she walked up to her parents house??? Yep, still trying to figure out the connection.

We think it was a coincidence about the FBI and his ex. And we think he was trying to kidnap his ex as he had been peeping on her.

Really enjoyed it. Glad there was closure. Often times there is not in true crime.

I liked how the first episode they put Aaron in a room that looked like prison.

The man and the woman should have a daily press conference outside their house to remind people how clueless and stupid and pathetic the cops are.

Definitely felt like they ran out of budget to tell the rest of the story.

Felt like the cop that got killed in Cypress a few years back and turned out half the department was sleeping with his mistress and they just locked it down and stopped talking about it.

The real truth is that a cop could come in your house and murder your entire family and never be charged with ***** Or they could accuse you of kidnapping your own wife while 400 miles away she's getting raped by a Grade A sociopath and still not take the blame. I like to think I'm an optimist most days, but not with the PD.

That was a pretty decent fake out. I was pretty sure he looked too good to be doing hard time but I still wasn't sure whether he was in prison or a free man.

Sheesh, I watched this one over the weekend. Had kind of forgotten about this story. The things that humans can do to other humans never cease to amaze me. Strangling his wife was horrible. But what he did to his own little daughters. There HAS to be a special place in hell for this guy.

A couple of questions that either weren't covered or I just missed:

  • Did the cops find a camera and tape in the boyfriend's house?
  • Did cell phone records confirm that the boyfriend called his bank to see how much money he could get?
  • Did the kidnapper know these people? How could he know the difference between the ex and the current girlfriend?

Screen Rant has a list of some more info and things left out. The police chief never apologized to the couple for mishandling it. They only got an apology from a new chief in 2021. Mat Mustard apparently got promoted in 2018 despite failing a written test to be a detective, par for the course.

https://screenrant.com/american-nightmare-denise-huskins-kidnapping-details-left-out/#what-happened-to-detective-mat-mustard

I'm not going to watch this thing, but this is a 30-minute jail interview with Matt Muller from 2018. He fired his lawyer at some point and represented himself in his trial, which meant he could have cross-examined the woman he kidnapped/raped, but utltimately plead no contest, but now says he's innocent.

Sure seems like there is more to the story than what was presented. With all we know about the FBI and corruption and their ability to create criminals so they can justify their budget and action, I believe the FBI agent had a role in the events. That coincidence is too unlikely. Did any of this even get to discovery or to trial or was it pled out before anything could be revealed?

Watched this in one sitting. Crazy ass story and the cops (local and FBI) were completely useless in this case…except for the police woman in another community that connected the dots.
I absolutely loved Officer Caruso! She seemed to be the only one following evidence rather than trying to confirm her own biases. Big surprise that Vallejo PD pretty much ignored her.

It is curious. It's interesting that a federal agent showed up. Normally with these types of cases, its state agencies, unless it's a small-town jurisdiction requests their help and resources because its an especially gruesome or difficult to solve crime for the resources they have.

Good choice. I watched the Dateline (or 20/20 or 48 Hours...they all run together) episode on the Watts murders. It was stomach-turning.

Muller knowing the names of his victims (actual and potential) mystifies me. Maybe they explained that and I missed it. His MO was bonkers (e.g., advising "Tracey" to get a dog before he bailed, driving Denise to her childhood home).

I remember there was an interview with Chris after he was in prison. He said something like he still looks at his kids' pictures and reads them a story every night. That is a whole different level of psycho.

I think FBI (at least based on TVs and movies) as jurisdiction for any type of kidnapping.

They said he never said why he wanted Andrea (the ex).

I think he watched/was still peeping and saw Andrea and thought she was just a little ****ty.

His past infractions, he had some strong fantasies of having sex with women that are under his control, and I feel, that he would thought he would feel okay raping Andrea because, in his mind, she looked/acted like a "****" (or what he envisioned as a ****).

You can see he had to come up with a dumb story to have sex with the kidnapped girl. Then he didn't feel right about that and came up with even dumber story saying she had to act like she was into it.

He's just a sicko with weird/strange reasons which is why the police were baffled and didn't believe the story by both of them because of the way he kidnapped them, demanded a dumb amount of money and then let her go.
