Man. That's surprising.

I can't stand Humans Being. Like "how did they sink to this level?" not understand it.

Same. I hate that effing song and I'm a huuuuge Sammy fan.

I get hating it, but EVH is still great as usual in this song. I can still listen to it on a nice warm spring day when the cap breaks and all hell is about to break loose.

If I had to just pick one VH album to hear the rest of my life, it would be Fair Warning. The whole thing is just so intense. EVH's direct response to the pop and covers of Diver Down.

Hard to be a direct response when Fair Warning was released before Diver Down.

Haha, I should know better. Got my timeline mixed up. But EVH was definitely feeling frustrated with the direction of the music (DLR likely talking adding even more covers) and had briefly considered quitting around this time. The anger and unhappiness comes out in the music.

I love Diver Down and yes realize they phoned it in on that album. Love the opening chords of "Where have all the good times gone" and of all the "Dancin in the Street"covers out there - VH is best by far! Secrets is good and even better live. Little Guitars is fantastic.

That's why he built 5150. So he had more control.

I think I'm one of the few that really like both Van Halen and Van Hagar.

I'm surprised the "Eddie was not taught to read music" bunk has not already been refuted. Perhaps it was meant as a technical word game, i.e. Eddie taught himself, rather than being taught, but he COULD read music. He and Alex were classically trained pianists. They both actually started (after piano) on the other's instrument: Eddie first on drums and Alex on guitar before switching. The rest, of course, is history. All the VH guys, at least through the Hagar years, were solid on music reading. Except for maybe Hagar, they had all been in college music classes.

True story: David Lee Roth is putting together his band after splitting from VH and he's interviewing/auditioning musicians. He sits down with Greg Bissonette, his first drummer. Bissonette had already gone through North Texas at the time. Roth was like, "Dude, you can read music???" Apparently, the other guys Roth was interviewing couldn't.

Off topic, Danny Elfman can listen to music and transcribe it. He can write it. But he can't play an instrument while reading music. It's all by ear.

Love both the Roth & Hagar eras. Only reason I don't hate the Cherone era is because it gave me an opportunity to go back stage and meet the band. They probably didn't do many meet & greets prior but they were desperate to promote that trainwreck of an album.

If memory serves Ed has stated in interviews that he just watched the teacher's hands and that is how he learned to play piano so the story that he could not read music is correct.

He probably played everything by ear.

I'm pretty sure there are 1000s of self taught musicians who write and record music who can't read music.

I'm by no means a musician, can barely play the guitar, but I've written music without knowing how to read music. Now, is it good? To me. To others, probably not. But it's original music I wrote.

Danny Elfman is an alien. So much musical talent flows out of that guy.
