Oppenheimer was the big winner.

Greta not getting a best director nomination is shocking. One of the biggest movies of the year, and I would say one of the toughest directing assignments. When Barbie was announced most people laughed and thought it would be a joke and she ended up making a fun, interesting, and poignant movie that made a TON of money.

I dont what to happen, but if RDJ loses best supporting to Ryan Gosling as Ken, that'd be pretty funny.

That race is already over (Nolan), but yeah, this is surprising. For some reason, this seems to be the category that usually has the biggest snubs of the year. (Speilberg wasn't nominated for Jaws, Affleck wasn't nominated for Argo, etc.)

I don't feel like Nolan should win. Barbie was so much better executed than Oppenheimer IMO.

Can't disagree more. Nolan made a three hour, talky movie that feels like it flies by. Combination of great writing, editing, and of course directing.

Plus, he is long overdue.

Mentioning Spielberg and Affleck made me think of this Dogma gem…

This should never be an award consideration. Ever.

But I felt the movie dragged quite a bit, maybe knowing the story already led to that some.

The funniest moment this season so far is the Ken song beating the Billie Eilish song for best song at the CCA. Gosling's face was priceless.

While I agree for the most part, it also has absolutely nothing to do with awards for creating art.

Kind of like a 12 team playoff in CFB...any given year, there are only 2-3 that really deserve it and have a chance.

snub for me is in the Best Documentary (which has a long history of snubs like Hoop Dreams).
Not nominated: Beyond Utopia.
Shows actual footage from the underground railroad for people escaping North Korea - and follows the harrowing escape of one family. Also shows smuggled video out from North Korea. Really amazing stuff -

I cannot get over Barbie getting a best picture nod and Gerwig getting snubbed. That movie was so complex and smart, poignant and hilarious, and she got amazing performances from the whole cast.

So they expanded to 10 after outrage against The Dark Knight getting snubbed and now Oppenheimer is a legit top 5 nominee and a blockbuster so time to move it back to 5

Really glad to see Past Lives and Anatomy of a Fall nominated for Best Picture. Two excellent films that I highly recommend. I wish Greta Lee (Past Lives) had snagged a Best Actress nom as well.

Oppenheimer will be a very good Best Picture winner in what ended up being a pretty strong year for movies.

I'm looking forward to the performance of "I'm Just Ken" during the Oscars, should be a lot of fun like "Everything is Awesome".

If Oppenheimer wins best picture, it will be the first top ten box office movie to do so in 21 years (Return of the King).

We've been on a really long run of top box office movies not winning. Used to be the norm that the winner was a big box office hit.

1989 - Driving Miss Daisy - #8
1990 - Dances with Wolves - #3
1991 - Silence of the Lambs - #4
1992 - Unforgiven - #11
1993 - Schindler's List - #9
1994 - Forrest Gump - #1
1995 - Braveheart - #18
1996 - The English Patient - #19
1997 - Titanic - #1
1998 - Shakespeare in Love - #18 (Saving Private Ryan was #1 -- still irritated)
1999 - American Beauty - #13
2000 - Gladiator - #4
2001 - A Beautiful Mind - #11
2002 - Chicago - #10
2003 - Return of the King - #1

Then we fall off a cliff. Since 2003 we've had a grand total of three top 20 box office movies win. Zero top 10 and about half outside of the top 50.

2004 - Million Dollar Baby - #24
2005 - Crash - #49
2006 - The Departed - #15
2007 - No Country for Old Men - #36
2008 - Slumdog Millionaire - #16
2009 - The Hurt Locker - #116
2010 - The King's Speech - #18
2011 - The Artist - #71
2012 - Argo - #22
2013 - 12 Years a Slave - #62
2014 - Birdman - #78
2015 - Spotlight - #62
2016 - Moonlight - #92
2017 - The Shape of Water - #46
2018 - Green Book - #36
2019 - Parasite - #54
2020 - Nomadland - #84 (Box Office Mojo shows it as a 2021 release)
2021 - CODA - ??? (not listed on Box Office Mojo -- $2.2MM gross which would've been around #100)
2022 - Everything Everywhere All at Once - #25

Actually we're laughing about Ken getting the nod while Barbie didn't. That's funny.
