Watched Maestro over the weekend. Not sure what I think of the movie overall but I thought Bradley Cooper was excellent. Many times I had to remind myself that was him. An amazing makeup job.

Question - were those actors smoking actual cigarettes during filming? I thought I was going to get lung cancer just watching them!
I've always been intrigued by the cigarettes in movies thing. I believe most productions have moved away from actual cigarettes due to the obvious health implications. Someone once told me they smoke "sugar" cigarettes and that the smoke is added in post. I have no idea how true that is. I've always said that if I was a film actor, my big NO would be smoking. So much of Hollywood is addicted to the cancer sticks, and you've heard innumerable stories about actors getting hooked because of the movies they were in.
Can't speak to what they typically use, but I remember reading that Gary Oldman got nicotine poisoning shooting Darkest Hour because he was actually smoking cigars in the way Winston used to

Well if that's what they did in this movie they deserve some sort of special award. Because it sure as looked like all those actors were truly smoking. (I know - I get fixated on some really trivial things!)

Slumdog over Dark Knight and Hurt Locker over Avatar/Inglourious Basterds are both complete travesties.
Birdman over Whiplash/Boyhood/The Grand Budapest Hotel/The Imitation Game.. Pick any of them. It was better than American Sniper though. That movie sucked.

Best Actor:
Cillian Murphy -250

I think Cillian Murphy will win, but damn Giamatti was good in The Holdovers.

I'm sure I will be piled on here, but - while I liked the Holdovers - I didn't think it was that exceptional. I will admit my expectations were very high. I thought Giamatti was good, not great. I actually thought the young man's performance - can't remember his name - was better. IMO, of the two performances, Murphy's was vastly superior. Flame away.

The young actor in Holdovers was great, but imo the son in Anatomy of a Fall was overlooked. He was fantastic.

Use any number of VPNs available for free or for like $9.99 a month and you can tell the website you're in a different state or a different country. Put your money where your mouth is!

We've been using a VPN to make New Zealand's TV stations think we live there so we can watch new episodes of Bluey for years!

he was very good (actor in Anatomy of a Fall) - but I was troubled that the character was at times overly mature and the adults treated him at times as a fellow adult, while the actor/character was quite young. I had thought with the adult-ish dialogue to/from him, that they should have cast a teenager in that role.
good movie overall - the wife/mother played the role quite well, not exactly the most nourishing mother of all time

No flame here, though I really liked Holdovers. Murphy should win. The actor who played the student in Holdovers has struck gold. He was terrific. Apparently he went to the school where the movie was filmed, was in college at the time and went back for an open casting call for all students from the school. He obviously got the main part and his career is certainly brighter than before when he was just a college kid like everyone else.

My wife is big into awards season, and she loved the SAG being on Netflix for the first time. No stupid bleeps or blackouts and no commercials. Will be interesting to see if Prime or Hulu makes a play for one now.

In a good way, it's not scary, and there is not one scene with any typical holocaust violence or dead bodies etc.

Yea

The actual foreground movie and sound are really almost noise as the background sounds and video and soundtrack tell the real haunting story of what's happening and what everyone knew about

I recently watched Oppenheimer for the first time and I liked it but I didn't think it was worth all the hype that it has had. Maybe it was the endless praise I've seen on here but I am not sure I will ever have the desire to watch it again. He was supposed to be this terrible person and I never really got that feeling and he didn't seem like that much of a womanizer considering the way so many have talked on here. Also I give Florence pughs boobs 2 thumbs down.

Eta - I wouldn't say it sucked at all though.

We should do a tourney of greatest year for movies - like the top 5 finalists for best picture, the top 3 at the box office, a breakout hit, and like a fan favorite for each year and pit them against each other to the death.

Probably 1994 would be the heavy - Gump, Lion King, Pulp Fiction, Shawshank, Dumb & Dumber, True Lies, Speed, etc., but it would be fun, although exhausting to do.
