Holy crap, that teaser for Interstellar. Wow. I don't recall ever seeing that, because if I had, I would have had a "*****YEAH" moment in the theater. Amazing that Zimmer had music from the actual movie in a teaser a year before its release.

Nolan has made a lot of absolutely great movies, but Interstellar is the best of them all IMO.

This got me thinking... What was Brad Pitt doing at the same time?

12 Monkeys released in January 1996. Interview w/ a Vampire was right at the end of 1994. Legends of the Fall and Se7en were both sandwiched in between those two movies.

He also had Bullet Train, The Lost City, and Babylon all in 2022.

Winning an Oscar in the middle of his run, while simultaneously conquering both film and television - not to mention, starting the movie-stars-on-TV trend - still separates McConaughey from the pack, IMO.

But man, Jim Carrey's '94 is an all-timer for sure, and Hanks' '93/'94 run is right up there too.

I would say Kevin Spacey started that trend.

Still agree that MM' s run was up there, adding in the fact that his carreer seemed to have been on the downward trend at that point.

Jim Carrey wins because he went from obscure, mostly unknown tv actor (especially to kids my age) to the biggest movie star in the world in the span of like 8 months.

He was ubiquitous to 90s kids for the rest of the decade.

IMO.

I won't argue that Carrey didn't basically skyrocket to become the biggest movie star on the planet in a span of eight months.

That said... McConaughey worked with Scorsese twice and Nolan once during his run - two of the greatest directors of all time - and again, ALSO won an Oscar. Not to mention, starred in one of the greatest television seasons of all time, while what he did for Nolan was star in one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time.

What Carrey did was insane, and will probably never be repeated... but it still lacks the sheer "prestige" factor of McConaughey's year.

I guess it just comes down to what you value more.

Mel Brooks directed the top earning movie of 1974 with Blazing Saddles and the 4th with Young Frankenstein. The latter got him an Oscar nomination for Adapted Screenplay and the former got him an Oscar nomination for best song.

Good list, thanks for that. As soon as I posted, I realized that Pitt was in 2 of those 3.

Side note and hopefully not a derail: if I for some reason ever run into Brad Pitt, my go to intro is "Dude, you were awesome in True Romance!".

Eh, I would argue that only one of those movies is good (Inside Llewyn Davis), and he's only in a few scenes at that. The rest is impressive, but no where near McConaughey, Carrey, Hanks, or Allen, IMO.
