I will give it to 1980 though, may be the best comedy year ever. And two really top end movies as well.

Can someone do 1995? Looks like there were some great movies that year too.
I'm into the late 80s but I'll post a few more as I go along tonight. I'm supposed to be doing actual work though too so that might interfere.

OK here are the 3 heavyweights before I go to bed - remember it's Oscar Winner, box office champ, and next 8 highest on IMDB top 250. No one is leaving out your favorite movie on purpose.

1993: Schindler's List, Jurassic Park, In the Name of the Father, Groundhog Day, Tombstone, Philadelphia, The Fugitive, True Romance, The Sandlot, The Nightmare Before Christmas.

1994: Forrest Gump, The Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, The Lion King, The Professional, True Lies, Dumb and Dumber, Speed, Legends of the Fall, Interview with the Vampire.

1995: Braveheart, Toy Story, Se7ven, The Usual Suspects, Heat, Casino, Apollo 13, 12 Monkeys, Leaving Las Vegas, Sense & Sensibility.

1995: Remove Sense and Sensibility and add GoldenEye. I doubt many here would disagree.

S&S 7.7
Leaving Las Vegas 7.5
Dead Man Walking 7.5
Dead Man 7.5
Living in Oblivion 7.5
Citizen X 7.5
The Bridges of Madison County 7.5
Dolores Clairborne 7.4
The Basketball Diaries 7.3
Richard III 7.3
Mr. Holland's Opus 7.3
GoldenEye 7.2

I have left off several of my own favorites that "just missed". You can still vote however you want to, i'm just picking 10 to give each year an identity. I'm sure people will list all their favorites from various years once the matchups start.

2013 is a great year. Shawshank is an all time great, maybe the greatest, but give me 1995 over 1994. Braveheart, Heat (classic), Casino, Se7en. and 1999 with American Beauty, wow.

I get the feeling we may have 3 90's in the final four. (Also basing that on the average age on this board.)

What makes 94 so great is not movies 1-10, it's movies 11-30.

Hoping to get this going on Wednesday or Thursday at the latest. I think I'm more excited for the seeding process than the actual results at this point.

Best surprise of the seeding so far? Serenity got the last spot on the 2005 roster.

A lot of my all-time favorite movies (and guilty pleasures) come from 99-01. That three year stretch was just nuts. Though being 11-13 at the time has a lot to do with it I'm sure.

Gladiator
Fellowship of the Ring
The Phantom Menace
The Matrix
Fight Club
Donnie Darko
American Psycho
Ocean's 11
Fast and the Furious
Austin Powers 2
The Mummy 1-2

And just missed the cut are Truman Show (98) and Spider-Man (02).

I will purge 1999 because of this movie alone. Sorry lovers of '99.

2014 delivers 6 movies at 8.0+ and two more at 7.9. Ironically it's oscar winner and box office champ are the lowest two for the year.

I don't have much to add, but between film and music, how freakin awesome was the early to mid-90's??? Our entertainment high water mark as far as i am concerned.

LOL ok

Movies? Yes...late 90's awesome. Music? Not as great in the late 90's overall...although Creed and other buttrock groups did emerge then, so I can see how some would think that was the pinnacle.

Was replying for the person who said 1999 was disqualified because of Magnolia. Sorry for the miscommunication.

Well tonight I learned that Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has the same IMDB rating as The Batman.

Almost done, and then once I write 2,000 words about how to get your kid into the most elite kindergarten in the world, I'm going to try and do the seedings.

Disagree. I did not like the movie and with the quality of some of these other years one movie is all it will take to rule a year out.

Post some stuff you don't like so we can call it brain dead.

We have a field!

The years are ranked 1-64. I have to get out the thing I used before to remember how to properly seed them based on these rankings. My plan is to start the voting at 9 AM central tomorrow morning and cut it off around 8 am Friday so i can set up the next part.
The Friday session will run through to Monday morning, and then on with the show.

Your regional #1s are:

1. 1995
2. 1994
3. 1999
4. 2006

Just three 100ths of a point separated their average rankings from IMDB for the Oscar winner for best picture, the domestic box office champion, and the 8 movies beyond those 2 with the highest IMDB ratings. Ironically, in more cases it was the Oscar winner's low rating bringing down the average score as opposed to the box office champion.

2019 lost out on a top 4 seed to 2006 by one-tenth of a point on the tie-breaker.

Out of 64 years (1959-2023, sans 2020), 9 years finished with an average of at least 8.00 based on the above criteria. Beyond the five mentioned above, the list also included 1993, 2014, 2008, and 2010.

Bringing up the rear in dead-ass last is 1970. See you tomorrow.

Schindler's List
Philadelphia
The Fugitive
What's Eating Gilbert Grape
The Pelican Brief
The Sandlot
Robin Hood: Men In Tights
Lathspell

2004 really is a fantastic year for movies, as well. It is not as top heavy as a year like 1994, but the number of good and great movies that year is insane.

ETA: Jesus... that is a lot of just good and rewatchable movies: https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?title_type=feature&release_date=2004-01-01,2004-12-31
