And right after posting, Keanu Reeves came to mind as well.

Weirdly all three are Canadian.

One of my pet conspiracy theories (jokingly) is that there's an Illuminat-eh. Canadians secretly plotting to take over the world by being ultra nice, and generally unhateable. Alex Trebek, Keanu Reeves, Ryan Reynolds, Michael Buble, etc.

Yes, I do think her race would have held her back from the top echelon. Obviously one can be Black or Latina or Asian or whatever, and still be popular: Flo Jo, Whitney, Halle Berry, Beyonce, etc. But no woman of color immediately comes to mind as having held that "title" of America's Sweetheart.
Can you think of a one who should have been America's Sweetheart? I think Whitney came close, but she was competing with Meg Ryan and then Julia Roberts in their primes. If Ryan was earlier and Roberts later, then I think Whitney would have been it.

Of those, sure. Whitney was the closest. I'd like to make an argument for Vanessa Williams, actually winning Miss America, but that scandal brought her down too quickly.

Dark horse: Mariah Carey.

Y'all forgetting Raven Symone. A true sweetheart.

She has derp face and is too slooty to be America's sweetheart. Takes more than a pair of big naturals to be America's sweetheart.
that doesn't sound very American to me

What about Kate Upton? She was everywhere until she settled down and started a family.

I continue to posit that one can not be America's sweetheart if they have photos in circulation of coital aftermath.

Yeah, that and Caitlin Clark were the biggest WTFs on this thread.

This thread is so weird.

Aniston and Witherspoon both got tagged as b*tches too early. (And I'll give them all the credit in the world for what they've done since). But nothing about it was sweet. And that's why it's worked.

Julia Roberts NEVER would have escaped the b*tch label in this era, but it was a different time. (And she's softened into it since).

Sandra Bullock is the one. Been through a lot. Handled it with grace. She's almost 60, but looks 40. When she shows up, it's a thing.

There just won't be another thing like those in this era. Too much going to streaming.

Jennifer Garner really would have been the one, but all her stuff has been going to Netflix, and that's just such a different economy.

What you had going on in the 90s-mid2000s was women getting paid $5-20M to star in films while their relationships were on front and center in the tabloids.

You saw it with Julia and Kiefer.
You definitely saw it with Jen and Brad.
You could continue the list all day (Reese-more than once, Jennifer, Sandra, all the etcs).

There was a change to mostly take control back, and be moguls/producers/in charge, and not let the tabloids be in charge. (Call that the business side taking over from the publicists, or whatever.)

But- the world was better when we were getting star-driven original content instead of more Marvel crap.
