Personally, I don't think "America's Sweetheart" has to be American. IMO, it's the actress who wins the heart of America, not necessarily one of America's own. If so, I would agree that it's currently Margot Robbie, especially after starring as/dominating with Barbie, which is about as American as consumerism gets.

As mentioned earlier on the thread, it's not just about being attractive, and in some ways I think Margot is TOO hot to hold this title.

I agree that it needs to be someone who feels like she could be the girl next door type. Attractive but not an all time hottie.

That, and charm and charisma is an absolute must. The kind of person that you find instantly endearing.

I'd definitely put Emma Stone above Robbie due to both of those factors.

With globalization or however you want to phrase it, American-like is good enough. Robbie, McAdams, Sweeney, etc.

I still think it's an age/maturity/sex thing. I think that America's Sweetheart is, for lack of a better example, your sister or daughter. You want her to be happy, in a good place, and not in Playboy.

It's weird, but since Swift has been in the limelight so long, and has always appealed to the same demographic, and has never had a real adult scandal or situation, that it is almost always a surprise to me that she's 34.

All this to say, that based on my parameters, we don't have one currently.

It is more of a societal change in my opinion. It is not modern to consider women the "weaker" or "fairer" sex. Women must be fierce and independent and it would be considered a black mark against a woman to be "America's Sweetheart".

The perception of the "perfect woman" has changed dramatically over the last 30 years. It is no longer admirable in the entertainment industry to be a monogamous matriarch. Here we are trying to shoehorn Margot Robbie into 2024 American Sweetheart

I love all of those roles, she is hot as hell. But none scream "sweetheart". America's sweetheart comes to the gut-wrenching realization that she missed her opportunity with the (almost) married man and walks him down the aisle to marry the love of his life. She doesn't give him a blow job in his Ferrari to steal him away.

America has changed dramatically in 30 years, and being sweet is no longer glamorous or idolized.

I mostly agree, the only slight pushback I have is that Stone hasn't starred in an "America's Sweetheart" type role in forever. Yes, her personality, appeal, Oscar wins, etc fit the bill to a tee, but her last "normal"/"traditional" movie was probably in the latter half of last decade. That's why Robbie might take the crown for me. Barbie was just so massive, and a once-in-a-generation blockbuster hit, that it feels like she's on top of the world right now, and is dominating pop culture in a way that Stone still hasn't quite achieved yet.

That said, I could ultimately go either way.

Piggybacking off the Smokey and the Bandit thread, peak Sally Field might be the all time America's Sweetheart.

There was a time when Jennifer Garner might have been on the list.

That's why I said Margot from the get-go. She's the total package. Part of it is also just that despite being a mega-star she somehow gives off a nice vibe. Like, I have zero idea but I get the impression she's actually friendly and courteous, I have no idea why. Crown her, don't care that she's Aussie. Australia is pretty much just a large, far away second Texas, anyway.

I know a couple of people who have worked with her and they've both said that she is, indeed, incredibly nice. I've never heard a single diva-ish story about her. That, and she's also a legit go-getter/incredibly hard worker. A number of actors who also "produce" hardly lift a finger in that department, but she's the real deal. She actually produces, is incredibly involved, does her homework, attends all the meetings, etc. Basically, it sounds like she's an incredibly kind, talented, driven individual, who's hot as hell, and also just seems like a really cool hang in general.

In our fragmented culture, it's a challenge to find an entertainer who appeals to a wide swath of the public.

So I'm gonna say that Doris Day in her prime is still No. 1.

As a previous poster mentioned the correct answer is Dolly Parton.

She has derp face and is too slooty to be America's sweetheart. Takes more than a pair of big naturals to be America's sweetheart.

I think Scarlett Johanson fit the bill for a few years.

Katherine Heigl was one for a couple years.

I didn't think Heigl ever fit the mold. She was known a b, and I think it came across in her work.

I think the reason you didn't really have an American Sweetheart anymore is the lack of Rom Coms. The classic American Sweetheart like Julia Roberts or Meg Ryan dominated the rom com industry. They really didn't do much else. Unless we change the definition, I don't think there really is someone who fits the mold.

Kristen bell could have done it. She seems pretty wholesome and has a very kind face. She made that show the good place watchable.

Audrey Hepburn is probably the original American Sweetheart, and she was British, so I didn't think having a foreigner would be anything new.

Does America's Sweetheart have to be an actress? If not, I think Taylor Swift is America's Sweetheart by a landslide. No one else comes close.

To me there's no doubt that she's the biggest star in America right now, but when I think "America's Sweetheart" I think of someone who is liked almost across the board. Taylor has a big chunk of fans who are fanatically DEVOTED to her, a big percentage that like her, and a decent chunk of people who actively dislike her.

It's almost like she's gotten so big to qualify.

I'd argue Mary Lou Retton and Chris Evert were at one time "America's Sweetheart" so athletes certainly qualify.
For today - I'd say Taylor Swift and/or Simone Biles.

I don't come across many people who don't have some kind of opinion. Many of the people I've talked to who "don't care" are always very anxious to go on a five minute rant about how much they don't care about her.

It's weird.

I suspect there's a lot of people like me, who are just tired of hearing so much about her and seeing her everywhere.

I could see how to die-hard fans it may come across as hatred of her, when it's more like we just don't want to keep getting her jammed down our throats.

I dislike the cult of personality that my 8 year old is getting swept up in because that is generally how those things go. I tell her constantly that she is just a woman and obsession isn't a good thing, but it is hard to reason with an 8 year old when there's a Taylor swift themed birthday party every other weekend.
Cliff.Booth
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The reason why it's Margot by a mile over Taylor is that we get a positive vibe from Margot (and she's smoking hot) but we really don't know much about her personal life. We see what she puts on the screen through her parts and her aura at award shows/events. With Taylor, it's all about her. It's why 70% of America is ambivalent or sick of her. Her songs reveal that she's petty, fickle, can be vindictive, seems very "pick me". Plus she's a 6 or 7. Not America's Sweetheart.

Cult of personality is a good description.

I like Taylor Swift pretty well and enjoy a lot of her music (although my wife's playlist is getting a little tired) but she's just a person. She's accomplished a lot and there's plenty to admire but I do see some people projecting their ideals onto her which isn't cool for anyone.

Like I said I think she's just too big to fit the bill for "America's Sweetheart."

The word "sweetheart" in the title kinda takes Taylor out of the running. Sweethearts don't bounce from celeb boyfriend to celeb boyfriend to celeb boyfriend and write scathing lyrics about each of them.

I think Simone's reputation took a big hit after she quit in the Olympics and she came across very unlikeable after that whole incident. I don't think her reputation has recovered from that.
