I mean one of the reviewer quotes was I Love You, Man for sickos which is about as raving a review as you can get for something like this.

It's like cable guy if it was made by A24

Stare at the side of her face during the entire movie.

Saw this tonight and it's definitely funny. I laughed a lot, as did the sold out audience, who skewed younger and were clearly big Tim Robinson fans.

That said, it's also suuuuuper weird, suuuuuper random, suuuuuper indie, and honestly kind of depressing. To the point where I just know this is one of those movies some people are going to hate, where they want their money back, etc.

It's VERY much The Cable Guy by way of A24.

Based on the effusive reactions so far, part of me was hoping it would be a peek at whatever the next wave of comedy movies could be, post-Apatow, post-Covid, post-woke, etc, but I just don't see this one catching on in that way. Who knows, though. Still, if you like Tim Robinson or awkward, off-kilter humor, it's totally worth it, as there are a number of memorable laughs throughout in that regard. But fair warning, a mainstream comedy this absolutely is not.

Will be curious to hear what everyone else thinks.

How does it compare to I Think You Should Leave, weirdness-wise?

I admittedly haven't seen a ton of I Think You Should Leave. What I have seen, though, this feels darker. It's funny, but also pretty damn bleak. That said, Robinson is exactly the same brand of weird/awkward. He feels like the one constant.

I'm still excited for this, but TCTTS's thoughts on his two posts above seem exactly in line with what the preview conveyed to me. Like yes it should be funny, but it gives off those vibes that it's also not going to be for everyone, and there will likely be weird stuff that you just have to decide to buy into. That's how a lot of his sketches are, and if you go ahead and buy in, they work because he commits to the bits as hard as anyone ever has.

Just for TC, this is my favorite ITYSL sketch.

ITYSL is like any other sketch comedy show though, where there are usually one good sketch, one decent one, and two bad ones imo.

That's pretty good. Robinson brings that exact same energy to the movie, but for context, to further answer an earlier question, the movie itself is a lot darker/slower/more indie than that sketch feels.

Maybe check on Detroiters, Robinson's sitcom with Sam Richardson, if I Think You Should Leave is too strange for you. I prefer it out of the two, and its streaming on Netflix currently.

As for Friendship, I'm looking forward to hopefully catching this one next week.

Okay, that was insane. Completely and utterly hilarious, with a full theatre cracking up tons of times, but totally off the rails. Rudd is playing the reverse of his I Love You, Man role here (with a touch of Brian Fantana), doing a great job as the charismatic straight man. Robinson is actually subdued at times, but he busts out his signature oddities at the right times. The story itself is a little bit thin and it goes a little bit dark, but humor wins the day. I would definitely check this out on a Friday or Saturday night and hope for a full theatre that is primed for a good time.

I watched some of the skits today not being as familiar. This movie is basically a string of skits that feature the same characters but several shades darker

Intensely funny, and absolutely wtf are people doing and saying in these scenes. I was straight up covering my eyes in sympathetic cringe watching this.

9/10 will not see again.

This is a great way to frame it. It's a comedy that made me laugh my ass off throughout… but I will never watch it again. As opposed to damn near every other comedy that made me laugh throughout, most of which I've watched endlessly since.

Hahaha that was hilariously ridiculous. Multiple extended lols.

Walking out, this poor guy in his mid 60's asks this couple in their 30s "So what was the message supposed to be in that?" They're like "Uhhhh, IDK what to tell you man."

It's that that super awkward sht can be really really funny.

Paul Rudd essentially plays Ron Burgundy and is the more sane character

"Where is your wife?"

"In the sewers?"

I decided to go see it in a theater, just seeing it alone - third movie I will have seen by myself in my entire life, only the second time by my own choice (my Aunt dropped me off at a theater to watch Jacob's Ladder alone when I visited her my freshman year at A&M).

What's funny, to me, is I noticed there are like 6 other single tickets (people sitting alone, no seat taken next to them) sold for the showing. For the movie "Friendship".

Edit: I lied, I saw 2001 A Space Odyssey alone just last year, 4th time.

Seeing a movie by yourself is one of life's greater pleasures.
