EDIT: Here's a Google Doc with the current list of characters nominated. You can check this before nominating someone. I'll try to update each once a day and put them in alphabetical order by character name to make it as easy as possible.

THE NOMINATION LIST

As discussed on the best movie (00-24) thread, I think this is the next logical and fun competition to put together.

I'm open to pretty much any format and all nominations so that everyone feels that their favorites are being included.

Here are my initial thoughts and then some questions that I'd appreciate anyone's relevant opinion on.

1. I think it should only be fictional characters, not biography characters. Like Rami Malek as Freddy Mercury or Gary Oldham as Winston Churchill shouldn't count.
2. Totally onboard with CGI/animated characters - Gollum, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, and anyone from a strictly animated movie are fine. Otherwise, I couldn't nominate Flynn Rider.
3. In order to be as close to realistic as possible on the seeding, we can do what we did several years ago on the best soundtrack list and have some pool play before we get to the actual tournament, where we put a certain 3 of characters in a pool, have them voted on for a day or 2, and then seed them according to # of votes. The website OpinionX seems capable of doing this for free, without collecting any personal data. This would mean you're not limited to voting for 1 character, but can rank all 4 or 8 or whatever. The points compiled could be used to get good seeds and eliminate those not worthy of the best 64 or 128.

4. We should make it in the format of ACTOR NAME as CHARACTER NAME so there is no doubt who we're talking about, not just Batman or Spiderman.

5. The more the merrier: As many people as you want to nominate, as long as you're being serious, the better. Everyone from LOTR, everyone from The Departed, everyone from Avengers, etc. Of course they can't all win, but part of the fun is always seeing how far they go.

Questions for group discussion

1. There are a couple of awkward ones where the character debuted in the 90s and the sequels are in the 00s. Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan and Keneau Reeves as Neo come to mind. Is it OK that they are part of it even though they debuted as the character in the 90s?
2. I would like to only do American films, other than those foreign films that become part of public knowledge - but open to discussion.
3. How many characters should be in each pool for seeding? I was thinking 4-6.
4. I'll really need some help with these. There are a ton of popular and important films I've never seen. I will likely make a Google doc of all nominees that people can check and then add to this thread to add candidates.

Any other ideas welcome. Thanks

It's for 2000-2024. I guess he would count in Rogue One though? Or ROTS

Actually, I feel like this is going to open Pandora's box, so there's going to have to some sort of rule about the majority of your appearances being in 00-24. because otherwise, Luke and Han and Leia and Yoda and Vader will all be in this thing, plus R2-D2, etc.

Thanks, I'm mostly trying to figure out the rules for how to construct the field, but I appreciate the nominees.

I'll throw this bit of a curve ball out there - don't allow for characters that existing prior to the year 2000. So that would eliminate the Luke Skywalkers of the cinema world, for instance. My reasoning is that could cloud one's judgement for the tournament's established time frame given how much a character like Luke is beloved based on films that came out between 1977 and 1983. I do acknowledge that these characters have made appearances in the time frame under consideration, but we all know you're not voting for Luke Skywalker circa 2017 over Maximum of Gladiator in a finale.

I also thought about considering only original film characters, but that would eliminate a lot of great characters that had films in the time frame but originated in a book/comic book, etc. So not a suggestion on my part.

I like the idea that the character has to be created post 2000. Like that animated characters are allowed.

Do TV movies count? Or only those released theatrically?

The first part I agree with
That's what I said earlier about the Darth Vader nom. It makes it simpler. So that also takes out Neo in The Matrix, and Maverick in Top Gun, etc., but I think it fits what we're trying to accomplish.

I think incarnating a book or comic book character is OK because that would definitely eliminate a huge amount of entries.

I know this isn't going to be balanced, but you could do a villains bracket, an animated character bracket, a supporting actor bracket, a non-human/superhero bracket, and a heroes bracket.

Is that 5 brackets? Yes
Did I think about the hottest woman bracket? Yes

Did I think this post would have much of an impact because it's complicated enough? No

I'm signing off TexAgs for good. I hope someone else does the tourney. 3-1/2 years of nonstop harassment is enough.

Appreciate you guys.

Good luck Bud,

Come back once you have had time to resettle. Don't know what took place that causes all the continual reminders from others and don't want to know but life is to short not to interact with the Aggie family if it gives you enjoyment for the majority of your time.

I was supportive of you being here when this handle was outed, All, the reasons are in that thread if it still exists. I don't know if there was anything else happening behind the scenes recently, but I expect you will find your way back at some point, the sense of community here seems important to you. Good luck regardless, I hope you still get that community feel from somewhere if not here.
