EDIT: Here's a Google Doc with the current list of characters nominated. You can check this before nominating someone. I'll try to update each once a day and put them in alphabetical order by character name to make it as easy as possible.
THE NOMINATION LIST
As discussed on the best movie (00-24) thread, I think this is the next logical and fun competition to put together.
I'm open to pretty much any format and all nominations so that everyone feels that their favorites are being included.
Here are my initial thoughts and then some questions that I'd appreciate anyone's relevant opinion on.
1. I think it should only be fictional characters, not biography characters. Like Rami Malek as Freddy Mercury or Gary Oldham as Winston Churchill shouldn't count.
2. Totally onboard with CGI/animated characters - Gollum, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, and anyone from a strictly animated movie are fine. Otherwise, I couldn't nominate Flynn Rider.
3. In order to be as close to realistic as possible on the seeding, we can do what we did several years ago on the best soundtrack list and have some pool play before we get to the actual tournament, where we put a certain 3 of characters in a pool, have them voted on for a day or 2, and then seed them according to # of votes. The website OpinionX seems capable of doing this for free, without collecting any personal data. This would mean you're not limited to voting for 1 character, but can rank all 4 or 8 or whatever. The points compiled could be used to get good seeds and eliminate those not worthy of the best 64 or 128.
4. We should make it in the format of ACTOR NAME as CHARACTER NAME so there is no doubt who we're talking about, not just Batman or Spiderman.
5. The more the merrier: As many people as you want to nominate, as long as you're being serious, the better. Everyone from LOTR, everyone from The Departed, everyone from Avengers, etc. Of course they can't all win, but part of the fun is always seeing how far they go.
Questions for group discussion
1. There are a couple of awkward ones where the character debuted in the 90s and the sequels are in the 00s. Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan and Keneau Reeves as Neo come to mind. Is it OK that they are part of it even though they debuted as the character in the 90s?
2. I would like to only do American films, other than those foreign films that become part of public knowledge - but open to discussion.
3. How many characters should be in each pool for seeding? I was thinking 4-6.
4. I'll really need some help with these. There are a ton of popular and important films I've never seen. I will likely make a Google doc of all nominees that people can check and then add to this thread to add candidates.
Any other ideas welcome. Thanks
