I had that same thought at the beginning of the first season of White Lotus.

Tarantino thread had me thinking, so before I lose my train of thought, I have:

1. Inglourious Basterds - Tavern scene
2. Up - Opening scene
3. Mad Max: Fury Road - Furiosa going rogue chase scene
4. Get Out - The sunken place
5. Lost In Translation - End scene

I'm sure I'm missing a ton. There are a ton of comedies and Marvel movies that will make me rethink this, but wondering what everyone else has.

Great choices.

But give me Inglorious Basterds opening scene with Hans Landa. Almost 20 minutes of pervasive tension juxtaposed with his cheery and overly polite demeanor.

The tavern scene is great, but mostly in the last 5 minutes.

I'd have both in my top 5 though probably.

Along with

Interstellar the Matt Mc scene where he gets a message from his daughter (or the docking scene tossup)
Rogue One ending
TG: Maverick the renegade solo flight

followed by:
Gladiator - end scene
Gone Girl - cool girl monologue scene
Mad Max Fury Road - dust storm chase scene
Oppenheimer - nuke test scene
Hell or High Water - porch scene
Whiplash - end scene

and Mulholland Drive would probably have the next 10 scenes - I can't pick any of them over the others
audition
coming to LA
Silencio
the diner
suicide
jitterbug
lesbo sex
the cowboy
the party scene
botched hit

I wonder if you asked people what they considered "directed" well, would they describe a scene that is good because it is acted well? Or great story? Or great effects? To me, it's about how they helped me relate to the story, but bonus points if it is challenging to convey.

A scene like this one from Chernobyl tops it for me. When I think about this setup, the actors were not stars, the visuals were pretty simple (ie practical effects), no music (but great audio effects), and there wasn't a lot of dialogue. The costumes were pretty authentic, but not complicated. But all things considered, they managed to convey just how harrowing this experience was in a very relatable way for the audience.

There were probably some other scenes in Chernobyl that I liked more because of the dialogue, or acting, but I think this was very well directed on the whole.

"I'm feeling light as a feather." scene from We Own the Night.

I remember watching that for the first time and feeling so nervous for him. The music, darkness, and also hearing him breath makes you feel like you're there.

You can't say enough about how great Chernobyl is.

Villeneuve in Sicario. From the moment they arrive in El Paso through the entire prisoner recovery and back to base. That has got to be one of the best directed scenes. It's also a masterclass in building tension.
