The one knock against it is that, IMO, it's the least memorable in terms of action.

The bridge scene is legit action and pioneered Ethan running.

Mission Impossible is way more consistent than Bond in terms of what you get. The only one I'm not a fan of is MI:2, it's just a bit too silly for me. You can throw on any of the other MI movies and I'm game to watch it...Fallout is the best one, it's the pinnacle of what these movies can be. Bond on the other hand has awesome movies like Casino Royale and Skyfall, but the rest of the Daniel Craig movies aren't great IMO. Quantum of Solace, Spectre, and No Time to Die I've only watched once each. I've watched the MI movies way more over the years but I have seen Casino Royale and Skyfall as much as any of them. But also the Bond movies are different in general, it feels like every one of them has the need to reinforce how cool James Bond is. Ethan Hunt is way more stressed out in each MI film, he's got the world on his shoulders, he acts like a guy who never sleeps, he might be cool but that isn't the point of that character.
The best part of MI 2 is that Dougray Scott had to bail on being cast as Wolverine because production ran long on MI: 2
What a happy sliding doors moment that made for us all.

Kind of like a traffic pattern, perhaps...?

Going to speak some blasphemy into this thread but I've never watched any of the MI movies since the first one many many years ago. I have this weird block where I've just never felt like watching them.

This thread made me decide to give it ago I've now watched 1-3. #1 I'm sure people like from a nostalgia standpoint but there are some weird plot things like why the villain shoots Claire instead of Ethan to get away. Also laughably the beginning lady walking up to the gate to get stabbed as well.

Number 2 I was literally laughing throughout it was awful in the best kind of way.

Number 3 was a step up in every single way and easily the best of the first 3 by a long long shot.

It's not blasphemy- and here's why.

MI3 was the only one that had a writer-focused director.

In 2004 JJ Abrams actually still was that (and quite good at it-at the time).

1) Was De Palma- not a writer.
2) Was Jon Woo (like I think this farthest thing ever from a writer beyond like Jan de Bont or Roland Emmerich).
3)JJ, a writer on his first film direction, comes in and actually oversees making sure there is an actually good script, and it's good. Because that's what he's used to paying attention to.

4)Well, then JJ got too busy doing too much to care about scripts anymore, and just turned it over to his usual stable without caring any more bc he was doing 99 things.

5+-)McQuarrie takes it over, and does have some writing chops, but only works for Cruise ever, at all, and is like "whatever you want to do Tom".

3 is the only one where anybody (JJ) as a writer focused guy, to say "let's nail this script, and I can handle the action stuff".

I can't argue with you about 1 and 2

3 is great!!

But trust me - 4, 5, and 6 keep getting better
7 is good but incomplete without 8

Catch up!

I can't believe I saw 2 in theaters as if it was going to be a great movie experience. I lke to think of it as having to hit rock bottom before we got the real deal.

Limp Bizkit making the most iconic 5/4 time signature song of all time into a 4/4 song was prophetic

Edit: or 6/4 maybe? Whatever. You know what I mean.

Finished number 4. It was kind of a standard ho hum spy thriller nothing that special about it for me.

The berg Khalif building scenes were ho hum?

And the car park at the end? That was so good - and only 1 way to get to the bottom safely and he drove off it - amazing

To each his own but man.. that was an entertaining movie

And yet 5 was slightly better and 6 was for sure better

This could be the effect of watching all 4 this week but they all start to feel the same. Obviously the action and gadgets are upgraded in every movie but didn't really feel like there was much of a villain presence in 4 compared to the first 3 even.

That's fair - the villain in 3 and in the next movies is better than in 4

Keep posting your reactions

And note that 5 and 6 are kind of a combo as are 7 and 8

5 finished, I think it edges out 3. Both were really good but I think enjoyed 5 more. A very satisfying **** you to capture him like that lol.

Prepare yourself for six, which many consider to be one of the greatest action movies ever made, if not the greatest (I'm in the latter camp). It's also the first in the franchise that acts as a true sequel to its immediate predecessor, with multiple characters and plot points introduced in five carrying over to six. Can't wait to hear what you think.

Also on my journey of rewatches. Haven't seen 1 & 2 in probably 20+ years. Just finished off Mi5 on Easter Sunday.

Through 5 -

  • Mi4: Ghost
  • Mi3: PSH
  • Mi1: Wake up Claire!
  • Mi5: Rebecca Ferguson
  • Mi2: John Woo - dancing car crash

You know who tried to warn us about MI:2, Tom Crooze.

IMO the one big miss from 3 to 4 was losing Maggie Q.

Paula Patton was fine in her role and easy on the eyes, but Maggie Q felt like a better fit in general. Though she would have kind of repeated a similar "I'm the hot girl at the party" trick in back to back films.

Didn't Brad Bird direct #4 (only previous experience was Pixar)? From a quick search McQ was brought in to tighten up the script.

Yup, that was Brad Bird's live action directorial debut (and a pretty impressive one at that) but he'd directed at Pixar as well as on a number of other projects (Iron Giant, Simpson, and as a 2D animator at Disney among others) in a variety of capacities for a couple decades before that.

JJ EP'ed #4, off a script from some of his Alias writers (not our favorite ones).

MI 1 will always be my favorite. From the opening scene where they show those throw a way face masks for the first time to some iconic scenes such as where he has to spread out in order to not hit the floor and where he slams the blue and red pieces of gum together to break the fish tank window (and of course sprints out of it) are amazing.

I treat MI:2 like I do for Rocky 5, Godfather 3, and the last 3 newly made Star wars movies........they don't exist.

I'm going to have to do a rewatch of all of them because they are all very good.
