Started my rewatch of the MI movies before this summer. Nostalgic with the first. I was a Junior at A&M then. Second one is fun, but a definite one-off for the series.

And I forget every time how much I love 3.

From 3 on, they are all so great. But, Philip Seymour Hoffman is so incredibly good!! He is an amazing villain.

Love this movie.

Monaghan at her very peak as well.

Best villain in the series and it's not really close.

Totally changed the series and it seemed so risky at the time.

JJ Abrams made a career out of this movie- and owes getting to own 2 of the hugest franchises to nailing this movie.

It was the last MI that really had it dialed in before it all became too much, really (and it's not like MI2 wasn't crazy, they just came back and hit the right notes here, before letting it all go nuts.)

And any time you have Keri Russell doing anything *chefs kiss*.

I dunno, to me 4-6 are the peak of the franchise.

I think I enjoy 3 more because of PSH, but the storytelling in 4-6 is far superior, IMO.

Love every bit of it and can't wait for the "final" one this summer.

It just depends on what you want.

3 was the last script focused of the franchise. And it's obvious why they brought JJ in, after Carnahan walked and Cruise said "Alias this, please." Which, he did. (S1-2of Alias are amongst the greatest things ever created, so he did well.) That was before Cruise went off the rails with the extreme action over script, and making sure everyone knows he did that himself. But he lost care over script.

Then JJ was like "yeah, I don't have time to manage these crazy action sequences anymore either, and I also quit caring about script, but I can do 2 franchises and 8 mediocre TV series faster than I can do this.

It is one of my favorites as well. But we should be thankful it didn't kill the series. It was by far the least commercially successful...profitable but likely made producers think twice about another sequel. It didn't help that it was released peak bizarre-Cruise era.

M:I III…

-Best villain of the franchise.
-Best "energy" of the franchise, in terms of fun/banter/hijinks.
-Best job of humanizing Ethan Hunt.

Though not a huge win financially, it "saved" the franchise in that it served as the winning blueprint going forward in terms of tone. Without it, the franchise isn't what it is today, and I shudder to think where we'd be if the darker, grittier, Joe Carnahan version would have been greenlit instead.

The one knock against it is that, IMO, it's the least memorable in terms of action.

That said, I'd actually put it above Ghost Protocol overall, and probably even Dead Reckoning.

In fact, I'd go something like...

1. Mission: Impossible - Fallout
2. Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation
3. Mission: Impossible III
4. Mission: Impossible
5. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning
6. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
7. Mission: Impossible II

I was just debating the merits of the franchise as a whole to a friend this weekend. I do think it is the best action franchise of all time, ahead of Bond.

I'm hoping that this is the end for Tom Cruise as lead, and then he can graduate into a head of the department kind of role.

That's what I want to see. Ethan as the "M" of the IMF and he's a mentor of sorts to the new operative.

I still love the Bond series, but MI has totally stepped into its shoes as Bond continues to wander in post-Craig Amazon development hell.

Let's do this. Strength vs. Strength. Pick your winners. Which franchise will reign supreme?

(Seedings based on Metacritic.)

MI6 v. IMF. Bond v. Hunt.

Mission Impossible Fallout is the greatest action movie of all time

I like Bond and Bourne too, but MI is superior - especially since Chris McQ joined in

3 was great - revived the franchise
Ghost Protocol was SO GOOD - and it kept getting better each time

Here's the thing.

Yes that's the answer for the franchise. Could this *maybe* have happened if Top Gun 2 wasn't the thing it was? *Maybe*.

Is he going to be willing to be neutered in the next 5 years? I'm not seeing it.

This was *supposed* to happen with 4-Ghost Protocol. Jeremy Renner was in, Cruise was into the sunset, all the etcs. Then it just got crazier.

ALL of the indications we've seen is that Cruise is NOT taking that elderstamesman role, and will hold up a production over it for 5 years if he can.

Would he have been ready to without Top Gun 2? Maybe. Now he's gonna hold MI hostage.

Don't forget that Metallica wrote "I Disappear" for the Mission Impossible 3 soundtrack. Bootleg versions of the song made their way onto Napster weeks before the official release of the song which brought Lars Ulrich out of the woodwork to eventually shut down Napster.

The way we purchase and listen to music today started with Metallica and Mission Impossible 3.

Love the scene where Cruise is discussing traffic studies at the dinner party. The guys are left feeling insecure and every women wants to be with him. Classic Cruise movie star scene.

Mission Impossible is way more consistent than Bond in terms of what you get. The only one I'm not a fan of is MI:2, it's just a bit too silly for me. You can throw on any of the other MI movies and I'm game to watch it...Fallout is the best one, it's the pinnacle of what these movies can be. Bond on the other hand has awesome movies like Casino Royale and Skyfall, but the rest of the Daniel Craig movies aren't great IMO. Quantum of Solace, Spectre, and No Time to Die I've only watched once each. I've watched the MI movies way more over the years but I have seen Casino Royale and Skyfall as much as any of them. But also the Bond movies are different in general, it feels like every one of them has the need to reinforce how cool James Bond is. Ethan Hunt is way more stressed out in each MI film, he's got the world on his shoulders, he acts like a guy who never sleeps, he might be cool but that isn't the point of that character.

7 responses, haha.

MI2 loses to Never Say Never Again, 2-5

MI1 over No Time to Die, 6-1

MI3 over Dr. No, 4-3

MI:Ghost Protocol loses to Casino Royale, 3-4

MI:Rogue Nation beats Skyfall, 5-2

MI: Dead Reckoning beats From Russia With Love, 4,3

MI:Fallout beats Goldfinger, 5-2

MI Theme beats 007 Theme, 5-2

IMF wins the series over MI6 in 6 games. Final tally 5-2. I'm legitimately shocked, but I'm a huge Bond fan. Makes me think I should go revisit the series.

The best part of MI 2 is that Dougray Scott had to bail on being cast as Wolverine because production ran long on MI: 2

I worked for a traffic engineering firm a few years ago. I used to chuckle at the notion of applying mathematical formulas to what is essentially human behavior.

Driver - oh, you think that yellow light is going to stop ME? Hold my beer and watch this!

What was the one with all the double crossing and there was a train? That was one of the most confusing damn movies I've ever seen. May have been 3. Wife tells me there was an Asian girl in it. Guess that was Maggie Q.

I was 15 when I saw it in theaters with a group of friends, and I remember every single one of us being confused as hell as well (despite really liking it). That said, I did a rewatch before Dead Reckoning and, as an adult, it was pretty easy to follow.

Yeah, I need to do a rewatch. I've only seen any of these movies once and when they came out, so it would almost be like watching them all again for the first time.

You have five-and-a-half weeks to knock out all seven movies.
