I'm sure we've done this before, but the news about Pope Francis gave me the itch to re-read Angels & Demons. Which ranks high on my list of pretty good book, pretty awful movie.

What stands out to you as a movie where they took some good source material and made a totally awful movie out of it?

All the Star Wars after the original 3

Almost every Stephen King novel (Shawshank was a short story)
But The Dark Tower was a bad movie but also had HORRIBLE source material... I can't understand how anyone likes these "novels" they are horrible.

Stephen King talks about this in his book, On Writing. He full well acknowledges that some of the movies that were made from his books were bad, while others were amazing. (The Shining/Shawshank/Stand By Me:Good)
(Maximum Overdrive/Silver Bullet: Not so much)

It can come down to how good the production company is but even good directors are capable of laying an egg once in a while.

He may have, but the point is, some were well done, others not so much.

I love the Congo movie. Probably because I saw it when I was younger, but the movie is awesome in my opinion.

Perhaps it was a decent movie, but for me, I had read the book and it simply didn't measure up.

I had a similar reaction to Patriot Games, the movie, vs Patriot Games, the book. The movie as a stand-alone was good enough, but my problem on my first viewing was comparing what I was seeing on screen against what I had read on page. Not a good idea. I walked out with two major complains - as much as I have loved Harrison Ford's movies, he was simply too old for the role of Jack Ryan, and they took a very minor character who Ryan identified via a satellite image based on her tits in the book and made her a major character in the movie.

I actually thought the movie was better than the book. I put Ready Player One on the list of overrated books.

I usually don't mind too much removal of established reality in books compared to the movie. But this was a movie about pop culture revolving around playing video games and tech.....and the challenges in the movie are pretty laughable compared to the books. I just can't put aside how blatantly obvious it is that movie either never consulted with or just ignored anyone in the gaming world as the challenges they came up with wouldn't have lasted a week for professional gamers to have figured them out, let alone a year, and definitely not 5 years. I get not wanting to focus on the problem solving in the movie, but damn.

That all said, to not repeat some of the other ones here that are the top of my list I'll add:

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, this one drives me nuts

Revenge of the Sith I know someone mentioned every movie after the original 3, but since I take issue with Rogue One being a great movie I'll add Revenge of the Sith specifically. SOOOO much potential source material and instead we turn Darth Vader into a whiney little child killing simp of a wife beating ***** all because he's afraid that his wife might die one day....just wow

In my younger days I was a big fan of several of John Irving's novel. My favorite being "A Prayer for Owen Meany." "Simon Burch" was a movie "suggested by" the novel and I was greatly disappointed with the adaptation.

I've never actually read it but I was told Forrest Gump was a terrible book. So, opposite of what OP is asking.

Ill add a 4th Crichton book to the thread.

The Lost World. Great book that they completely butchered.

Basically, they've screwed up every Crichton book other than Jurassic Park and Rising Sun

Yeah I think I actually liked the movie better as well. I also don't think some of the challenges in the book would translate in the slightest to the screen.

For some reason I thought about Fist of the North Star the other day.

The manga series has sold over 100 million copies. It had a 150 episode anime series, a pretty well received animated film and an absolutely horrible live action movie.

I am Legend is a way better book than movie. A second the Postman.

Ready Player One is a clever book that got a decent movie. The second novel is the worst thing I've ever read.

Maybe my Entertainment Board opinions suck, but I thought The Lost World movie was better than the book.
