Quote:

WASHINGTON, May 5 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday announced a 100% tariff on movies produced outside the country, saying the American movie industry was dying a "very fast death" due to the incentives that other countries were offering to lure filmmakers.
"This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat. It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda," Trump said on Truth Social.

Are we talking about this yet?
TC, what's the buzz in Hollywood? Are there any guesses at what impact this will have, or how it will work?
Thanks and gig'em

My question is if it's only movies funded by foreign production companies, or if it also includes American productions that film overseas. (ie Star Wars and many other blockbusters)

Everyone started freaking out last night, but then mostly calmed down once they realized none of it makes a lick of sense and almost assuredly isn't enforceable as presented. Just more dumbass Trump insanity.

Dumb policy, impractical, and flatly illegal (see 50 USC 1702(b)).

So, par for the course

Its been 2 hrs since this thread/Bat Signal was started, which is a lifetime for the regular F16 posters. How are there only 7 responses at this point, and all are anti-Trump?

This whole episode was so objectively stupid that I don't think even they can defend it. That said, I've noticed the tide turning, re: F16's opinions of Trump lately, given how much chaos the tariffs are causing in general. Way more anti-Trump posts than there used to be.

Like any politician, I like some things that President Trump does and I don't like other things he does.

I believe he means well, but this one was a dud from the beginning.

He's walking this one back too quickly. I really wanted to hear him explain how movies made in other countries were a "national security threat"

Eh, the first 100 days have been great. God forbid we disagree with something "our party" does or says and aren't 100% in alignment across the board. The tariff thing was always a somewhat unpopular position for the right and fiscally conservative independents so of course you are going to see dissent regarding that.

I bet nobody has changed their mind on Tariffs. I have not seen anybody say "I'm wrong". People like me, who have been anti-tariff for decades have been outspoken about it from the beginning. What you are seeing is the pro-tariffs dudes refraining from posting more and more.

For an informative, nuanced discussion on this topic, I highly recommend this just-released half-hour podcast episode. Most of us don't at all disagree with the issue Trump is highlighting. He's right in that we desperately need film and television productions to return to the states (L.A. specifically). But as with most things Trump, while he correctly identifies a problem, it's his chaotic/idiotic, bull-in-a-china-shop solutions that are often the issue. That said, if he and the industry are somehow able to arrive at a proper solution, like a federally-mandated tax incentive, more power to him…

Or perhaps the State Government of California could give tax incentives so productions didn't have to go to Atlanta and other places to film.

I know less about Hollywood/LA filming fees than I do about tariffs; but my guess is Trump just wants to get filming done in the US to keep more jobs in the US.

Recently I heard Rob Lowe talking about wanting to keep filming in LA as much as possible; so much so that he got the film crew of his (fireman?) show, which is supposed to be based in Austin? (maybe), but he got them to film in LA. Good for him. Movies and films are more than just the main star, it's a whole crew of people making it work and most people in LA live there for tv and film. But I get the appeal to go elsewhere, especially when other cities/state/countries provide so many incentives to leave LA/Hollywood. Rob mentioned it's cheaper to fly an entire cast/crew to Ireland to film a game show, than to do it in the States. That sounds crazy, but if the economics weren't there, it would not be done.

That's already in the works and will certainly help if passed. I'm just saying, if Trump is actually serious about this, and wants production to return to New York, Atlanta, etc as well, that's probably the best solution. Not tariffs, which make absolutely no sense in this scenario.

It was clearly a passive agressive shot at conservatives/Trump supporters on F16. You could have easily made your point without going there.

Dude. Come on. There is nothing "passive aggressive" about that post. It's an objective observation. I don't even understand how it could be a "shot at conservatives." I'm critiquing Trump's dumbassery, yes, but otherwise observing how posters are reacting to said dumbassery, which isn't a critique on them at all. In fact, I'm glad more of them are speaking up! This is off-the-charts pearl clutching on your part.

It's amazing how people can get rich being so stupid. Goes to show you it's really about being an ahole and narcissist more than it is about intelligence.

Trump should only have ever started up a tariff war as a means to negotiate with the most egregious non-free trade offenders. And one at a time. And with set objectives. This whole nonsense about bringing back manufacturing and everything else like creating tariff rates based on import/export differences is just narcissistic bs.

This is clearly bad Trump to everyone except those who believe ANYTHING he says. Which is still a significant amount of people not unlike those on the left that blindly believe what the democrat leaders tell them. Basically there is a good 20% of people on the left and another 20% on the right that can't think for themselves.

Not real sure what he was trying to do here. China and India have pretty big industries now in their own right.....because they are huge countries. Nothing to really do about that. It's not like a ton of those movies get shown over here anyway especially the Indian ones.

Of note, the last time I looked something like 7 out of the top 10 highest rated action movies on IMDB are Indian movies that most people have likely never seen or even heard of.

I did notice the Oscars this year did away with the best foreign film category and combined those into one Best Picture category with American films which squeezed out a lot of American films that might have been nominated in the past. I wonder if that's what caused this? Sounds like Hollywood better start stepping up their game.

Hollywood is dead and incentives or cutting the cost of permits isn't going to bring it back. It is so much easier to shoot anywhere else. My Hallmark movie Hats off to Love that premiered Saturday was shot on a local incentive in Florida. If you are shooting big budget that requires stages go film in Atlanta. I am about to start filming in Charleston if the new incentive passes in July. My production pods will be Kentucky, Georgia, Florida and South Carolina.

I'm still stuck on what he was actually taxing. How do you tax a service on import when it isn't being imported? Just bizarre.

Give me a break. F16 is notorious for defending Trump at all costs (with plenty of exceptions, sure), and I was pleasantly surprised at the seemingly increasing number of dissenters. That's not a "shot" or being "passive aggressive" toward F16 posters, that's an objective observation, and a knock on Trump himself.

This is some desperately-looking-to-be-offended nonsense.

Painful irony.

Crazy thing is I agree with what you said (regarding Trump and f16), and I voted for him. Just find it odd that you are insistent that it wasn't a stray toward f16.
