I've watched a lot of old, classic movies recently just to see if they held up. Many do not, but this is a great suggestion.

I do the same. Indeed, most do not hold up. Some that still do:
Charade (Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant)
The Conversation (Gene Hackman and a bit role for Harrison Ford)
The French Connection (Hackman)
Papillon (Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman)

More recent:
In the Name of the Rose (Sean Connery and that dude that rips off Jack Nicholson)
Citizen x (Stephen Rea and Donald Sutherland)
A Perfect Murder (Michael Douglas and Viggo Mortensen)
The Road (Viggo Mortensen and a bit role for Robert Duvall and some annoying kid)
Wife's always kidding me about my love of prison movies. This one is definitely in my top 5. Along with The Great Escape - another Steve McQueen classic.

Wasn't a huge fan of this one but my favorite Giamatti movie is Sideways.

Hunt for the wilderpeople

Also going to echo Wag the Dog, amazing cast (DeNiro, Hoffman, Harrelson, and Heche with great cameos by William Macy, Dennis Leary, Willie Nelson, and Kristen Dunst) it is probably the best political comedy and still relevant today even though it is clearly about Bill Clinton. The best part is the entire film was filmed in 28 days as a passion project due to a delay in the filming of the movie Sphere. Mamet writing and Barry Levinson directed.

Thought of another one: Murder By Death

A parody /spoof of the whodunit type of movies with a crazy badass cast: Alec Guinness, Maggie Smith, James Cromwell, Peter Sellers, David Niven, Peter Falk, even Truman Capote. Had no idea it was even written by Neil Simon.

Completely agree on Fandango. Love, love, love this movie. Skydiving scene is an absolute classic.
Just watch it, you won't be sorry.

A few films that randomly came to mind while reading this thread:

Come and See - very depressing WWII film focused on the German occupation of Belarus
Silent Running - underrated 70's science fiction film staring Bruce Dern
Dark City - came out around the same time as The Matrix and has somewhat similar themes. I like it more.

Based on this thread, I just added Fandango to my digital library. I was a senior in high school, baseball, getting things prepped for A&M, and don't recall this movie coming out. Have heard of it but never seen it. Will watch this weekend.

Silent Running made me sad as a youngster that stayed up way too late after everybody else went to bed, watching the late late movie.

I was just coming here to post this. It was on TCM a while back and I re-watched it probably for the first time since I saw it at the theater in the 80s. Lee Purcell as the original movie ****. How did I miss that the first time?

Saw that as a late night movie when I was young. Then we read the book in intermediate school. Heavy stuff for a young person.

Many great movies listed.

Here are five of mine that don't get much run:

Breaking Away - Great movie featuring young Dennis Quaid
Vision Quest - freaking love this movie. Great coming of age film.
Appaloosa - Was a fantastic Western.
The Ninth Gate - I like the creepy slow burn vibe.
The Mission - great historical fiction of a subject relatively unknown to US Americans.

Some movie musicals that are favorites of mine:

The Music Man - Robert Preston, Ron Howard, Shirley Jones
Camelot
Paint Your Wagon - Clint Eastwood singing "I Talk to the Trees" - LOL

Good one. Great cast including Dennis Christopher and Jackie Earle Haiey. I remember it used to be on TV pretty often back in the day.

Breaking Away is excellent.

Another one that occurs to me is Breaker Morant, an Australian movie.

Gallipoli is another Australian movie with a young Mel Gibson.

From the 1980s, The Last American Virgin. We all watched and loved the movie. When the guy simping for his dream girl walks into the kitchen at the party and sees her and the a-hole guy making out when the soundtrack starts is epic. I haven't seen it in 40 years and have looked for streaming options but it appears there are none.

Once (must watch if you love music. Simple and beautiful)

Dog Day Afternoon (early Pacino)

Warrior (I still can't believe this movie doesn't have more fans than it does. Tom Hardy, Joel edgerton, and Nick Nolte in a badass UFC flick with way more emotion than you'd expect)

Not Another Teen Movie (did the spoof better than any of the others during a run of awful spoof movies)

Dirty Work (Norm doing Norm things and completely unhinged Farley)

Honorable mention for Hell or High Water, my favorite movie of the last 20 years. When I lived away from Texas, this was always my go-to suggestion, but now that I'm back I realize a lot of people here have seen it

Just rewatched " Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and really enjoyed it. Watched it years ago and I guess I thought it was a little odd. Really loved it this time.

Gattaca.

I've seen this movie so many times and I love it. 82% on rotten tomatoes.
An all timer for me and so underrated, hits some still very relevant topics and is shot in a way that makes it feel pretty timeless.

One other I haven't seen mentioned: Brick.

It's Rian Johnson before he got too clever for his own good, a film noir murder mystery set in high school starting a young Joseph Gordon Levitt. It totally shouldn't work but it does and it's great.

Also seconding the Walter Mitty recs, super underrated film and absolutely beautifully shot.
