I'll also add...

They did a really good job of developing the characters, but still leaving so many unknowns.

What's Akram's back story, and what did he do in Syria?
What's Rose's back story, and what led to her hitting the old couple?
How are they gonna work Rachel back in?
What's the dynamic going to be if James gets their shooting case, but Carl didn't?

And they did a really good job of not answering anything substantial about the opening scene, while keeping you interested in the outcome with little nuggets throughout.

Question...

They spent quite a bit of time on Fincher, even intimidating him at the Country Club towards the end.

Was that just a bad lead, that ended up having nothing to do with Merrit?

If not, what was the connection I missed?
If so, why did they sent a henchman to intimidate Carl and his boy?

I feel like I missed something about that part of the story.

There was no direct connection to Merritt missing, but Fincher and the Lord advocate didn't want her disappearance getting investigated because they knew it would likely lead to Fincher getting investigated. And that would turn up how Fincher got away with killing his wife. So, that's why he sent henchmen after Carl.

He was the most likely suspect until it didn't pan out after the country club. However, it did give him leverage over the Lord Advocate. So, wasn't a complete waste.

The show is based off a book series that has like 10 books, so I imagine a lot of those answers will come later if they continue the series.

Good to know. Might need to grab the books.

And thanks for the explanation about Fincher. Makes sense about his wife.

I decided to read the book before finishing the series si ce we had a coue of days away planned.

It also looks like Netflix is working on a second season. https://www.newsweek.com/entertainment/tv/dept-q-season-2-release-date-story-everything-we-know-2086831

Ehhh, you're likely right (fingers crossed) but....

Will There Be a Dept. Q Season 2?

No, Dept. Q has not been officially confirmed. However, it's a near certainty. For starters, showrunner Scott Frank has gone on record as saying he wants to do more.

"I've got a great idea for a second season," Frank tells Collider. "It is another cold case and also a current case, at the same time, that they're looking into. So, I would do that."

That suggests talks regarding the show's future are happening behind closed doors. It's likely Dept Q. Season 2 is currently in pre-production.

Sorry, just been burned too many times by streamers cancelling good shows. Not gonna get too excited yet.

Netflix is the worst about cancelling good shows. Somehow they beat out Fox in that category.

Wife and I just finished it. Excellent show. It's a mix of New Tricks and Slow Horses. Love the characters.

Holy cow! Wife and I just finished as well. Can't recommend enough. Way better than most of the series we have tried lately.

All I have to say is, "I am Akram!"

Great detective story and characters. It was a pretty complicated story that unfolded. You had the red herring of Merritt's boss and last case, a side case of embezzlement, stolen identity, the shooting of Morck, the beating of her brother, and her kidnapping.
I watched with subtitles and it was entertaining watching it spit out some of the Scottish words like "Nae"

Did they ever resolve the original shooting of Morck?

No. That's my hope for Season 2 -- along with another case.

I'm really enjoying this one, half way done. But Carl's a-hole humor is my favorite part of the entire show. Great character for Goode. I also love the scenes with Kelly Macdonald I've always had a thing for her ever since Boardwalk Empire but she and Carl have a funny rapport
carl's **** parking is a gag right? It plays well into his "I don't give a fck" attitude.

Giving this a bump as I just burned through it in 2-nights. Thought it was great and hope they continue with many more seasons.

Yes

Finch himself even said, one thing he knows is not to mess with cops. So that did not make much sense.

But it did allow Akram to show more of his skills and a means to help bridge a gap with stepson and stepdad.

Beware, here be Spoilers!

Most excellent show. Please more!

The young Lyle being interviewed on film was top notch and compelling and horrifying. (When you saw his eyes were different, you knew!)

Just a couple notes: Running a decompression chamber for 4 years and not being caught was a bit of a stretch, especially with the local cop being around.

Lyle taking Sam's place was just too easy and seamless. I mean, what are the chances you assume someone's identity, meet up with the girl you've been infatuated with your whole life who actually knew who you were but doesn't recognize you anymore and she turns out to be into heavy casual sex and picks the person you're imitating?? JACKPOT!!
