I saw it at an IMAX theater expecting the best experience. The opening even claimed "made for IMAX" or "used IMAX cameras" or somesuch, but the movie itself was standard movie dimensions and the bottom and top of the screen were empty. Is that expected? The seats at the Cinemark down the street fully recline while these were standard seats. Seems like that's the much better value.

Actually, Grok said "over 70%" of the movie uses the full screen. I guess I didn't notice the switches…

If you saw it at an IMAX, do you think it was worth it?

It was a big ass screen but on some of the space parts I noticed it was extremely grainy. The sound/music was more impressive. Didn't really have the epic scenes like interstellar had. Though the package toss and Adrian scenes were quite good.

Really liked the book. And the movie delivered too. It was very true to the book. Great movie! Go see this.

Loved the movie. Read the book several times and it does it justice. Looking forward to another watch in IMAX

Our 70mm IMAX had a guy explaining it before the show started. He was saying all their equipment is still old-school film and most of it was refurbished at this point. He said the sound input was still via CD

Two thumbs up

I've done the audiobook a handful of times and it's one of my favorites. They did a very good job with the adaptation.

I saw it this afternoon and it was great. I think the best was how tangible the scenes with Grace and Rocky felt. It didn't feel like a CGI fest which I'm so tired of today. And when they did go CGI it made sense like when Grace was outside the ship and when they were in Adrian's atmosphere, but they didn't do too much. Big thumbs up from me, or big fist my bump from Rocky.

I would say it's kid friendly but that would depend on the kid. No way my daughter could sit still for a movie this long but there were some kids in there with their parents and I don't recall anything too objectionable.

Saw it today on the Samsung Onyx screen at Star Cinema Grill in Richmond/Katy. The was a perfect movie for that screen. The visuals from Rocky's POV were impeccable.

Andy Weir does a really good job of the science, but all of that is just plot device for the incredibly deep emotional story.

Grace realizing that he is a coward at heart, getting a 2nd chance at life and then laying his life down to turn around and save Rocky is the true theme of the story. He finally found his why and showed true courage, which is more powerful knowing he is a coward.

There are some things in the movie that elude to it, but the decision making process of turning around to certain death in the book is gut wrenching for Grace.

In my opinion, Grace realizing that he is going to live when Rocky gives him astro****e to go home was incredibly well done. Gosling did a fantastic job of showing that emotion and I cried with him. I wish they had done a little better job portraying the struggle with giving up his new found life to save Rocky and ultimately the Eridian race.

But I did love the movie, great adaptation of the book.

Edit to add spoiler tags, I guess we are still doing that?

For some movies like this one with a lot of visuals with dark tones, I think it is.

Taking the daughter today at 3 to SCG in Richmond to watch on the Onyx screen. The only previous movie I saw on that screen was Oppenheimer. I have read the book, so I'm going in knowing what to expect. My daughter is not familiar with the story, but does seem to have a thing for Gosling.

Saw this last night. I really enjoyed it. I read the book 3 years ago. I think having a gap and not remembering all the details helped.

I thought they nailed Rocky and the relationship with Grace which is the primary focal point of the story and what sets it apart. Loved the cinematography as well. Really liked how they would spin the image on the screen when going into a flashback.

I'm really curious to see the thoughts of non-book readers. Group I was with all had read the book and wondered if the story made sense to those without any background due to the pacing.

I went in completely blind (literally avoided all trailers) and loved it. Thought the epilogue was a little "hokie" and wish we coulda seen some of what was happening on Earth but I understood the time constraints and otherwise love the movie. Think Gosling will be a Best Actor Nom and this movie I'll def get some adapted screenplay and visual effects buzz.

Saw it Thursday with 3 total other folks. Crazy.

Anyways, I wish they would have spent more time on Erid. Would have liked to have seen a "me" burger.

Could have done more at the beginning where he had amnesia. Loved that part in the book.

I will probably go see it on another IMAX screen. Loved all the space views. Those were brilliant.

And meh to the Karaoke scene.

I thought they did a good job adapting the book. People are too stupid, and the move would have been 3+ hours long, if they really dove into all the science and engineering in the book.

One thing I didn't quite follow was the extent of memory he was able to regain, and when. That part wasn't too clear IMO.

What a beautifully shot and wonderfully funny movie. I laughed way more than I thought. The effects looked great. Some early shots felt almost like Alien and other ones felt like out of 2001 A Space Odyssey or Interstellar.

Got to see this in 70mm IMAX and just wow. also got the Trojan Horse Prologue for The Odyssey and Dune 3 as trailers and once again, wow

Can someone who has a little more knowledge about it help me understand how the other two people on the ship died, did they just happen to not survive the trip??

For your question:

Simple answer is medically induced comas are dangerous. In the book the looked for people with a certain gene that made them more coma resistant (higher chance of survival) and only used people with that gene. Grace also happened to have the gene. Even then, the still recognized that there was a high risk that the astronauts could die during the coma.

Too late really. You'd have to be a dope not to have a pretty good idea of the plot and main characters from the previous 13 pages.

No way I was going to this Thread until after I saw the movie. I can't understand why anybody would?

Saw it yesterday morning - we always go to the morning shows for two reasons: The big theater is almost empty and I don't fall asleep in those awesome lounge chairs while drinking my Starbucks.

That being said, what a great ride! I read the book but loved the movie. Wifey didn't read the book but loved the movie.

my only vague gripe was I thought the sound editing coukd have been clearer - then again I'm used to closed captioning at home.

Might be the only time in my entire life I actually find myself agreeing with TCTTS on anything. Not that difficult to have discussions separated, especially when one of the two threads literally says it is for spoilers, and yet somehow you not only intentionally ignore it, but seem to go out of your way to point out that you are ignoring it.

This is how we've done it for damn near 20 years, for every single blockbuster/big movie.

Once the movie is released, the "official" thread becomes the "general reaction" thread, and then the newly-created spoiler thread is where spoiler discussions are held. It's not that complicated, especially when the spoiler thread has been linked to numerous times.

People here always ***** and moan whenever critic reviews are posted or Rotten Tomatoes scores are referenced, saying they only care what the general audience thinks. And now, when those of us who can't see the movie until Saturday/Sunday/next week want to read general audience reactions here, y'all are essentially like, "**** you. You snooze you loose."

That's bull*****

That's what these threads have ALWAYS been for.

Also, I started this thread, so don't tell me what it is/isn't or that I'm a "dope" for reading it. **** off with that.

This and the Silo thread may be the most contentious threads ever between readers and watchers. I edited my semi spoiler and will move to the other thread.
