I can't believe they are still doing this, but I just this week got my latest Nielsen request (with 2 crisp $1 bills- they've upped it since the last time) asking for my journal of what I watch for the week, which is how ratings are tracked.

There are fewer 18-49yos sending that back than are actually watching late night.

Damn, I always thought people had a box of some sort and it pulled the info from that. You actually have to keep a log of what you've been watching?

The actual numbers beyond the ALL CAPS $40 MILLION LOSS headline
(https://cordcuttersnews.com/the-late-show-with-stephen-colbert-was-losing-40-to-50-million-a-year-according-to-reports-as-cord-cutting-grows/)

Only 219,000 of his 2.42 million average are 18-49.

Yikes! That definitely explains the loss in revenue as this is the number most companies looking to buy ads are going after. Colbert was picked for this show/time slot to deliver this audience. I don't know of any show outside of a reality dating show or sports that can consistently deliver this demo.

They saw Colbert's success on Comedy Central and wanted to grab 'The Daily Show' audience thinking it would translate. They made a gamble, and it failed. The formats were very different, and took Colbert out of his element of being purely satire.

The legacy networks are a bit like newspapers trying to compete with the numerous alternatives in today's market. Live sports is one of the few things keeping them relevant. They also can't seem to get out of their own way.

Agree with this. That was his nitch, and he was one of a kind at it. Take him out of that environment and he honestly just seems kind of like a snobby insincere elitist a-hole to me. Someone I wouldn't want to hang out with voluntarily...we'd probably largely ignore each other if we were neighbors.

Guys like Johnny Carson and Jay Leno were likeable and relatable to a large % of America. Colbert just doesn't seem like a very likeable guy to me. To be fair, it's possible he's not really being himself in front of the cameras and he is actually a much cooler and more down to earth guy in real life.

Do I think Trump played a smidge in this decision. Sure. But everyone who is crying foul about Colbert being put on the alter and CBS being cowards are conveniently ignoring the last decade of prognosticating that late night was dying.

It's a lot easier for the entertainers with huge salaries or network execs to blame one man for all the problems than actually have a tad bit of self-reflection - which ironically they probably also only think applies to others.

Gutfeld is currently killing all of them in that timeslot.

I will say he did get in a nice jab by saying Colbert's desk probably costs more than his own staff and he's still beating them in the ratings.

Who cares

All the talk shows hosts have sucked since Carson. Surprised they have lasted this long. Have not watched one in forever.

If it's true the show was losing $40 million a year, the question isn't why it was canceled.

It's why it took so long.

History, prestige, unwillingness to take a risk on something new, maybe even seen as a loss leader to other CBS products.

you left out:

"executives wanted to promote Colbert's political endorsements"

I'm a Neilsen house and have boxes on each TV.

(I'm also in the 18-49 age group and watch late night and WNBA (plus NWSL), so I'm doing my part )

Watched last night out of morbid curiosity and that was terrible and kind of sad. A delusional guy ranting and trying to joke about being canceled and unintentionally making it ultra clear why his show hemorrhaged money. I tried to ask myself if this would be a decent watch if I suffered from TDS and I really am not sure, it's just not good or well-written. Only good aspect was his live band, they're fun. I can't imagine continuing to make martyr jokes until May knowing everyone knows the reality of your sinking ship.

You could put Colbert. Kimmel and Fallon in a blender, blend them up and they wouldn't make a pimple on Carson's ass.

Kimmel only has one year left on his contract, and has openly talked about potentially retiring soon numerous times. So if he's out it'll likely be on his own accord and he simply won't renew. ABC isn't going to fire him in the next couple of months, right before his final year/season begins. But if for some insane reason they do, like Colbert, they'd almost assuredly keep him on the air for the upcoming year/season.

As for Fallon, most in-the-know types seem to agree that he'll be the last to go, since he has Lorne Michaels to help "protect" him. Also, The Tonight Show is obviously even more of an institution than The Late Show, and would be a bigger deal to outright cancel. Yes, it'll eventually happen, but when it does it will likely happen more gracefully. Not to mention, overall, Comcast (who owns NBCUniversal) seems to be in a far more stable position, financially, than both Paramount and Disney.

In other words, Trump, as usual, is simply stirring up unsubstantiated *****

Possibly, but he has every reason in the world to despise/clown on these male Joy Behar's. I would not be surprised if both are gone in 2-3 years...and Trump probably is thinking along the same lines. He probably rattled that post off from the sh*tter with a smirk on his face.

These shows DO suck...I have tried in recent years and just can't. I don't know what it is...maybe societal preferences and forms of entertainment have shifted...but something about them feels stale and lifeless compared to old shows like Carson, Letterman, Leno etc etc. I also feel like those guys were just nice to everybody, regardless of position or political beliefs. Didn't Jimmy Fallon have to basically apologize for humanizing Trump by treating him with some level of respect back in 2016? INSANITY lol.

Trump has every reason in the world to despise them, yes... but they have every reason to despise him as well. He's an ******* and just as much of a clown. That said, Colbert/Kimmel/etc admittedly went way too overboard in their despising, for far too long, and now they're suffering the ratings consequences. And I agree that all of their shows suck (though if I had to pick one, Kimmel is the most watchable, IMO), and that not a single one of them will be left in three years. I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything different. I'm simply saying that ABC almost assuredly isn't firing Kimmel (he'll likely leave on his own), and that Fallon is potentially somewhat more "protected," at least for another year or two. But he'll eventually be gone as well, no doubt.
