Is it known that Gandalf knew that Moria had been set upon and wiped out by orcs/goblins and that's why he didn't want to go that way. He seemingly didn't know that Balin was dead though, based on the first interaction in the tomb.

Thoughts or insight?

He knew that something was wrong, but doesn't seem to know what.

"But I would not lead you into Moria if there were no hope of coming out again. If there are Orcs there, it may prove ill for us, that is true, but most of the Orcs of the Misty Mountains were scattered or destroyed in the Battle of Five Armies. The Eagles report that Orcs are gathering again from afar; but there is a hope that Moria is still free."

Correct. Gandalf (and everyone else) was aware of Durin's Bane but did not know it was the balrog

He knew something was wrong, but not what. Moria was incomprehensibly massive. It wasn't so much an underground castle or fortress as an underground kingdom or state. Balin's company would have been like a frontier fort in the Louisiana territory.

Ya, you kinda get that when they find all the dead and decayed dwarfs in the entrance area and what not, but then get to the "city" part of Moria with those tall columns and where they get set upon but the orcs and the balrog shows up.

Watching it with my 11 year old for the first time.

Cinema died after Peter Jackson did the LOTR trilogy.

The Arwen Grrrrl Power nonsense was the only flaw in the trilogy.

... there were many flaws. It's still the greatest trilogy ever made, but there are many flaws, and Arwen was the least of them. In fact, I don't even consider Arwen a girl boss, at all. She rode through the night to make it across the river so the power of the Elves could protect her. It was Elrond and Gandalf who washed the Nazgul away.

ETA: Also, when Aragorn told her to stay and he would go, she didn't respond in a girl boss way. She made a rational argument saying she was the faster rider. She then simply comforts him and says she does not fear them. How is any of this a girl boss moment?

For me, FOTR is better than the other 2 combined. Everything in The Shire is such a gorgeous love letter to the world Tolkien created. Ditto the 2 statues on the river. PJ really takes his time to show the wonder of Middle Earth. They don't make'em like that anymore.

I'm pretty sure they filmed her at the Battle of Helm's Deep and then took it back out for exactly the reason of not wanting her to have too big of a part that didn't fit her character. All they did was give Glorfindel's part to her, and Glorfindel is one of those guys that you couldn't possibly explain in a movie - "Sorry, guys I'm too powerful for the secret mission."

Agree with you here, Arwen wasn't anything more than she needed to be.

I could* write a few thousand words on everything wrong with PJs trilogy and arwen in fellowship would be at the bottom if she even made the list.

She rode Frodo into Rivendell. That was the only major thing she did the whole trilogy.

How is that girl power? Especially when there's Eowyn. But that was in the book so I guess that one is okay?

Maybe I need to go back and read as well as watch, but I don't remember Arwen being OP'd to the max or overly involved. I mean she's Aragon's lover/BF, her involvement in the movies seems apropos minus her calling on the river to take out the wraiths

I always laugh in ROTK - nobody but the Fellowship even knows who Arwen in, then when Aragorn is coronated, if you're a random Gondorian, you see the new king just go into the crowd, pull out this fine ass elf princess, and lay a kiss on her. Those people are like "Damn, it's good to be king!"

I think the river thing falls into the movie rule of "show don't tell"

In the book you get a good explanation of Rivendell being protected by old magic but just saying that would have been boring on screen.

The worst problems with the films (other than having to leave a bunch of stuff out) were:

The "exorcism" of Thoden. He wasn't possessed, he was old and weak and let himself become that way. Gandalf doing some demon removal **** takes away from Thodens actual redemption arc where he realizes what he has become and makes the choice to take part in the fight.

The hobbits escaping from Faramir. This is probably the worst. Faramir Is one of the few characters that would never take the ring and makes the conscious choice to let it go. It's a complete juxtaposition to his brother, showing that while they were both noble in their intentions, the quest for ultimate power is always corrupting.

100% on Faramir. I love the Two Towers so much for the Theoden / Rohan / Helm's Deep parts, and dislike the Faramir parts immensely, along with Aragorn and his magical horse.

Arwen tells Aragorn that, if she can get across the river, the power of her people would protect her. Most just miss this line of dialogue before she rides off and assume it's Arwen summoning the waters.

I just watched this the other night because I was bored and was reminded of my confusion of why Balin was shuttered off in this random small, side room in Moria.

I haven't read the books in 40 years, so I don't recall any specifics from it. Was Balin caught unawares when the Orcs attacked and took over and that's why he was in this room? Were they just driven out of their primary abode and this is where they retreated to?

It is interesting how many changes Jackson made in the TT and RotK that I didn't like. I still love those movies, don't get me wrong, but there's a reason The Fellowship of the Ring is a top 3 movie of all time for me and the other two probably live outside my top 20, these days.

I think FotR is a perfect movie. I have no notes. Every time I rewatch it, it just solidifies it's place even more, and it's been doing that for the last 24 years.

Correct. You can see it in Gandalf's face when the orcs all scatter and he sees the fire glowing in the hallway of Moria and realizes what they are up against.

Eowyn you mean? Arwen barely did anything in FOTR besides outride some ringwraiths and use some elf magic on the water.

Arwen's presence in the trilogy is dumb. She should have been in like one flashback scene and the coronation. Instead, she is a battling elf completely out of place... put there so PJ could have a household female semi-lead character that otherwise contributed nothing to the story.

Eowyn on the other hand is fine and her parts were good.

For me the TT & ROTK just haven't aged well and dare I say it's just too much of the same thing. Honestly TTT fares better than ROTK. Again my opinion.

But Fellowship Extended version is among the top 5 films of all time.

Theoden still had a good arc though. He had to make a choice to finally face Saruman's army and eventually ride to save Gondor rather than running and hiding.
